Stunning exterior gives the impression of having a matching interior - wrong! Inside it has been given the "contemporary" make-over and is just not in keeping with the age and character of the building. OK the brewery perhaps decided that olde-worlde was old-fashioned but sorry if I see a pub with an exterior like this I expect it to be reflected indoors. Thwaites beers plus a couple of guests (my Kirkstall Pale Ale was good). Sadly the barmaid spent most of her time on the phone and only put that down to quickly serve me my beer. It seems such a shame that this is not a better pub as it is handy for the buses (next door) and the trains (5/6 minute walk)

A few real ales, and pub grub served unimaginitively in a listed building, though the requirements only seem to apply to the exterior.

It's near the bus station so has time-killers making a half last on cold days etc.

It's perhaps understandable that no one wants to take a chance on a makeover as it's not in the buzzy part of the city: there again, neither is the Fat Cat.

Yes, the exterior belies the blandness of the interior.
The beer was OK but no more than that.

Stopped in on the way up the road because of the eye catching exterior and had an acceptable half of Thwaites Oktoberfest. The barmaid was friendly and served us quickly, but before long we moved on to The Devonshire Cat.

Beautiful exterior, but that's all one can say. Dull and lifeless inside with Thwaites brews on offer, had the Lancaster Bomber which was just about drinkable. Interchange next door which is useful i suppose.

I was disappointed with the interior of this pub after the promise of the exterior. Comfortable though. The landlady was a bit terse - one of those dragons who joke with you one minute and get on their high horse the next. The beer was ok if you like Thwaites - not one of my personal raves. Handy for bus and train.

Thwaites Original, Lancaster Bomber, & topical Red Nose Bag. Central semi-octagon(?) wood bar with brass rails at counter & floor level. Bar surrounded by sectioned, but open, carpetted seating areas and fabric-wood banquettes follow around the walls below windows, old photos provide decoration. Behind the bar to the rt is a dining room with nice stone fireplace & coal grate, but it is unfortunate that the old full-length slat windows offer a view of only some picnic sets then a paved area where some bus-workers were having a smoke. Thursdays blackboard specials were chicken & bacon pasta (4.50) or lasagne verdi (5.25) both included garlic.. bread! Printed menus majored on cheap pub grub eg fish&chips or steak&kidney pie were both 4, most wines were listed at <10. Very quiet thurs 3pm and the 2 fruit machines may be invasive at other times, but most anoying was the music being neither on, nor off, creating the irritating tinny bleed effect from cheap headphones of an inconsiderate walkman/ipod user. The pub is not all bad, the beer was ok, but even with a location handy for trains & buses it needs to try harder in this town, and the interior is hardly sympathetic to a building purporting to be one of the oldest in Sheffield.

Saturday March 7, 2009, afternoon.
There was no decent beer on offer. This pub serves a range of Thwaites beers, which are insipid to poor, and can't begin to compare to the range of micro-brewed beers available across Sheffield, re taste, quality and price.
Much worse though, the landlord was rude -- repeatedly rude if not nasty and even aggressive -- and this despite the landlady cajoling him to be civil; and I recall he'd been not dissimilar when I'd encountered him a long while back. The landlady took over serving me, but I said that I was no longer prepared to buy anything from the pub given the landlord's demeanour.
I was with a group of friends, so I didn't react to the landlord's unpleasantness, but I'll make sure we never go in this place ever again.
The pub seemed to have a few town soaks just to finish the experience off.

one of the few really old buildings left in sheffield after WW2.
***
While the outside has been preserved, much of the interior has been modernised. Although the frontage with the large window [photo] is in what seems to be the dining section. This interior has been preserved to some extent, with exposed original ceiling timbers, etc.

Oldest pub in Sheffield, but the interior is pretty standard and modern. Usual Thwaites beers in decent nick, sport, food served in the day. Was reasonably busy on my visit on a Saturday. Not a bad place to wait for a train but nothing to go out of your way for, despite the heritage.

It's ok as a meeting place. Would have to make more trips to see if it will become my new local.

Lovely building and reasonable beer, but somewhat run down, not particularly friendly, and poor food.

A hidden Tudor delight, miraculously surviving the developers. Located behind the bus station and opposite Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, this Thwaites house serves three of their cask ales and food for most of the day. Three rooms, one non-smoking, separated by a fine old fireplace, surmounted by a superb mirror. Nice button back seating follows the walls, and topped by a decorative wood frieze. If youve an hour to spare between trains, dont bother with the Howard opposite the station, turn right and head here.

A bit of a godsend if you are travelling. Ideal meeting place. Decent beer, good food.
