The last entries author must be a tramp or down and out if he thinks that this place is even worth using for the the loo! How can he suggest that this pub is better than the Travellers Friend or The Cricketers that are just a stone throw away? This pub is a spent force and inhabited with low life who have been barred from all the other decent places. Even the harvester at The Castle is better!
You must have been to some grotty places if you give this 8 out of 10 mate. It is probably the most depressing uninviting place in the area! You must be barred from the pubs i've mentioned above?

Best pub in the local area, although the competition is not fierce.
Almost split into two distinct pubs with the lower and upper bar, having somewhat separate clientelle. The lower bar generally has more intelligent discussion, whilst the upper bar is usually noisier with more drunken patrons.
Poor features include the removal of the previously popular jukebox. Punters now have to suffer the forced brewery music.
There is also a ridiculous restriction from sitting on bar stools at the bar, even when there is hardly anyone in the pub, on say a Sunday evening.
The beer garden could also be revitalised by replacing the shrivelled dead brown plants with fresh ones and then employing a gardener to water them.
The furniture and machines have also been misarranged, with a quiz machine placed in a narrow aisle opposite the upper bar, causing frequent congestion on busy evenings.
The decor is also somewhat shabby, with too many random posters hanging from walls interspersed with out of date black and white pictures.
Despite these and many other flaws, the pub remains a vibrant part of the local community. This probably stems from its fair size enabling it to retain a quite sizeable base of regulars.
Most punters are from the local surroundings and a certain affluence can be detected amongst some. Nonetheless a few scruffs and tramps manage to ensure the pub retains a "down to earth" feel to it.
Attractions to the pub now include a varied food menu being served until 9pm most evenings (as soon as the required staff can be found or trained).
There is also a Monday night poker game, Tuesday night quiz and there has even occassionally been a Karaoke evening.
High profile sports games, including football, rugby and golf are regularly shown on the many flat screens inside the pub, and sometimes extended to an outdoor screen in the garden.
The bar staff are usually very accomodating and the beer is usually maintained at a high standard.
So, whilst I may have my gripes, nowhere is perfect and I feel the Rose and Crown deserves my rating of 8 out of 10 for probably being the best local (and traditional) pub in Woodford village.

A nice locals pub with a wide variety of different people of all ages enjoying the good ales. Recommended as an antidote to the underage drinkers of South Woodford pubs.

You certainly get a wide range of people in here. Mainly unsavory though. On the night I went were two of the biggest blokes ive seen drinking pints with a gang of 6 others. They were scarey creatures and tried not to make eye contact. They seemed friendly enough and kept themselves apart from everyone else. Then there were a few vagrant types mixed in with smartly dressed East Enders blokes with Mutton Ladies dressed as Lambs. I think the customers look after the place. The staff didnt look worried except just miserable like a lot of staff these days. Beer was not anything shout about. Overall found it uninspiring.

lots of old boys up the ramp. don't go there if you want to meet any ladies. as mentioned below it's more of an old skool pub. the lower bar still has only a gents toilet.lol. fine for a local slurp away from those noisy youngsters and their pop music.

great pub, nice beer garden, nicely hidden out the way. come on steve, shout 'em in!
|
Very average local pub, set in a backstreet off the main road.
|
Standard 'mans' pub. Decent beer, lots of blokes talking loudly and getting drunk slowly. Good place in the summer. Not over-exciting for the ladies I'd guess.
|
Awful Pub, the worst kept beer, alarmingly awful punters, drab decor, I don't see what all the fuss is about, why'd anyone want to drink here is beyond me.*
*very poor attempt at keeping the general pratty essex hordes out of what is a proper pub, if you like a proper boozer with no aggro, no posers, this is the one for you
|
Quality! A proper East End boozer somehow displaced to the London/Essex border. Bar staff good, Guinness superb, locals friendly and full of banter. Beer garden large and beautiful in summer. Has darkened corners and big heavy tables. We need more pubs like this round here.

Full of drunk men who'll happily chat to your all day if youre a young girl. Lovely setting and nice video jukebox. Cant imagine many of its regulars have loved or wanted children. "Daddy, can you take me to Epping Forest today?"
"What?"

A great pub with an average price. Not far from where I live and accross the street from my local hairdressers. Great jukebox. Me and my mate were getting drunk on tequillars whilst listen to many top tunes. The only problem is that there is too many old men.

A nice frendly atmosphere. Looks like a old mans pub, but is completely different. Staff very friendly, as are the locals. Offers a superb sunday lunch. Wonderful beer garden for summer. Has 3 tv and 2 large screens to show all types of sporting events. Quiz nights on tuesdays
