Very busy pub opposite the Opera house which seemed to have a good mixture of clientele... Cant remember all the beers but I was very impressed with the 5.7% Smokeless beer from the Red Willow brewery in Macclesfield. Lovely smooth pint with just a hint of smoke...

Here again this year, beer range not exciting but it's well kept.

We had a few in here and had a very pleasant time with a nice few pints of Wainwright. Not sure about the food as we didn't order as meal but the other diners looked happy enough.

Had a meal in this pub - my husband ordered steak and ale pie - the pie was off not just a bit off but furry!!! I called the staff member over who took it way she then returned and thanked us for calling this to their attention!! No mention of replacement or refund!!

I will vote with my feet and avoid this establishment in the future.

This building is on 2 floors which was slightly confusing as I approached from the main road side & found ourselves in the top floor carvery. Downstairs which is street level on the other side & opposite the Opera House is the bar area. Multi roomed with a variety of seating options its interesting & comfortable. Thwaite's - Wainwright, Marston's - EPA, Abbot Ale & Sharp's - Doom Bar on my visit. Staff were friendly & efficient - I didn't have to wait more than about a minute despite it being very busy. I've read the previous bad reviews about this place, but on my visit it was excellent - recommended.

We visited today after popping into Buxton to see the festival. Sampled the carvery. 1st time visitors here so can't speak for the previous management but don't have a single bad thing to say.

This place has a calm relaxing atmosphere, friendly staff, in fact more than friendly on the carvery.... I can safely say I have never been to a carvery where the staff serving the meats and restocking the veg have been so eager to help. They had welcoming smiles and encouraged our party to try everything and even have extra yorkshire puddings :) Two very nice guys!

The food was delicious, yorkshire puddings and roasties were cripsy, gravy was nice and thick, exactly how a Sunday dinner should be! This will certainly become a stop off point when we travel to the peak district.

Thank you for making our day out ...that little bit more special.

Glad I never heard your predecessor refer to us G&S folk as "sad f***s who have no life". Believe me, we have lives and most of our men are keen real ale drinkers. You have a captive clientele with the Opera House right opposite. Must admit we do eat in your pub but drink elsewhere except on performance days. Will be visiting the Old Clubhouse again in early August. Incidentally the photo on this page was taken by me in 2005. Good luck!

Very unprofessional manager/landlord. Very rude! A typical british guy!!!
We were supposed to have lunch with small children with us, the manager approach us and said he wasn't happy to serve us!!!
We were so disappointed, we will never recommend you!!! Very unfriendly stafff!

I have never seen such miserable bar staff in any pub before - think they thought they were doing me a favour to serve me - landlord take note - otherwise great pub and reasonable good priced food.

Good pub with reasonable prices on "doubles" if you avoid red bull. Also DO NOT TIP - taking a 1 is a bit of a liberty. They would have got a lot more if the bar staff hadn;t been so gready on the first drink

Such a shame that a nice pub can be completely ruined by the landlord!!
Very nice barstaff who still remain friendly even when very busy in the summer, the beer is very good and seemed to be kept well and the outside area is a lovely place to sit back and enjoy the beer and the sun...
I visited during the G+S festival in August and know several people who were offended by the landlord's attitude to the festival goers and performers stating that he "hated the festival because it filled his pub with sad f***s who have no life" and that "he couldn't stand the sight of them in his pub"!!!! Neadless to say, i stopped drinking there and about 10-12 of us used another pub in town where the barmaid told us that many of the locals found him offensive and would't drink there if it was the only pub in town!! Fortunately, it isn't.

Beer was nice enough (Bonbardier, Abbot) and the place was very lively. Room to the left is a bit more comfy/quiet which makes for a nice contrast.
Think I spotted some Keg Tetley but all the real ale was southern ... not sure why?

Handy if you are visiting the Opera House next door, during the week it's often quicker to get served here than by the geriatrics running the Theatre bar. There's a decent function room upstairs that is great for comedy nights and used extensively during the fringe.

Other than that this pub is just a little disappointing, a lovely building which has been been blandly decorated inside with not a lot to recommend it other than its location.

overall this is a great pub and great to watch the sport at as there is plenty of large TVs around with sky sports on. a must for the sports!!

Visited recently during G&S Festival, reasonable food and decent pints of Abbot. Not sure whether the latter is always on, in previous years the bitters here have been disappointing.

Quiet pub most of the time.
It is nice though.
not bad food, ok pint.
bad sometimes when something at the operahouse is on because you can get a lot of snobs who are very annoying.
