Well - I called in on Saturday for the first time. Muddy boots, rucksack and scruffy old camo jacket and sodden rain hat. Not a flicker of disapproval. Perhaps they thought I was the gamekeeper responsible for the menu or something!

Yes: very expensive - evenfor gamekeepers - but by having a starter and a salad I managed to keep it within my modest budget. Just about!

Seems to be on the up - the Adnams influence is getting there. Very quiet on October visit so unable to judge whether service could cope with a number of customers.

The Victoria @Holkham - Ah Yes, an 'interesting' bar/hotel/restaurant, with a 'Bohemian' theme, which kind of works, depending on how many drinks you've had! Plenty of room in courtyard at the back, or on the grass at the front (should you need any 'leaf' relief)! Food was indeed excellent, even if we did have to wait 40mins for it (& we'd booked!). The white Chilean house wine was disgusting! (Chap on the next table found a long hair in his food...and didn't even get offered a drink on the house..!) Oh well, its hard economic times I suppose. I would re-visit, but there are better places dotted around the north Norfolk coast, which is definately worth seeing. TJ

Not as bad as the previous reviewer states, provided you don't mind service ranging from indifferent to downright surly. It also helps if you have relatively old-fashioned views on class and an individual's place in society.

This place drives me mad. You know whenever there is an article in the weekend papers about well, let's say, 'where to go on the coast' 'best places for valentines weekend' 'best romantic weekends in the country' etc etc? Well, all you lazy journalists out there have exactly the same places in your notebooks... The Crown and Castle in Orford, The Royal Native Oyster Stores at Whitstable, and yes, you've guessed it The Victoria at Holkham. No, it's nothing special. In fact the service is dreadfully amateur if not downright rude - yes it's Hugo in his rubgy shirt on school hols chatting to his equally dreary chums and not bothering to serve anyone... Ridiculous rules about where you can and cannot eat your BBQ burger - NOT in the seats out the front you 'orrible oik! Strange decor brought back from Rajistan - nor exactly North Norfolk you might think. I suggest you give it a miss unless you really want to put even more money in the filthy rich Earl of Leicester's pockets. Avoid.

Decent beer and good food with a barbecue in the summer. certainly a bit posh but what would you expect of a pub owned by the Earl of Leicester and at the bottom of his drive?

An improvement on the old pub, which was bad, but it's a little too trendy now. Food lovely though, and beer well kept. Just be careful at weekends in summer when all the yuppies come out of london to go to the beach and be seen. Taking some trade away from the Hoste in Burnham Market which is probably a good thing.
