Ship Inn, Brancaster

Hmm. Interesting previous comments... Beer - seems fine and well kept. Food - I've tended to order crab salad and new potatoes (which was good) when I'm there as the the rest of the menu didn't really appeal, especially in summer. So I can't really comment on the food.

BUT there IS something a bit amiss about the attitude of the bar staff (owner?). Rude, I would say. Dismissive. Arrived 5 minutes before 2 (when the kitchen closes)to order lunch and virtually told to p@%ss off. Basil Fawlty watch out!

The Victoria, Holkham

This place drives me mad. You know whenever there is an article in the weekend papers about well, let's say, 'where to go on the coast' 'best places for valentines weekend' 'best romantic weekends in the country' etc etc? Well, all you lazy journalists out there have exactly the same places in your notebooks... The Crown and Castle in Orford, The Royal Native Oyster Stores at Whitstable, and yes, you've guessed it The Victoria at Holkham. No, it's nothing special. In fact the service is dreadfully amateur if not downright rude - yes it's Hugo in his rubgy shirt on school hols chatting to his equally dreary chums and not bothering to serve anyone... Ridiculous rules about where you can and cannot eat your BBQ burger - NOT in the seats out the front you 'orrible oik! Strange decor brought back from Rajistan - nor exactly North Norfolk you might think. I suggest you give it a miss unless you really want to put even more money in the filthy rich Earl of Leicester's pockets. Avoid.

The Black Lion Hotel, Little Walsingham

I'd go there out of season - Walsingham is probably the biggest shrine in the UK - hence the over-abundance of Christians noted by other corespondents. As an experiment, maybe a few lions should be added to the native fauna? But the pub is a friendly unspoilt local with good beers. Haven't tried the food yet as there has been (in January and so far in Feb) a sign outside saying 'no food today' Maybe the chef has been enshrined?
