user reviews of the George, Balham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Good revamp much better than the Devonshire. Also I really like the secret garden.
rockd1509 - 6 Jul 2009 15:30
Revamped and reopened. The interior is modern but one of the better examples of a refit (as opposed to the nearby Duke of Devonshire - Good God what have they done). Most importantly the selection of beers they had on when I visited was excellent; Landlord (which I believe is always on) with Doom Bar and Butcombe. Friends of mine who had eaten there earlier in the evening said that the food was a little hit and miss but the service was excellent.
cingulomaniac - 11 Dec 2008 14:21
The George has now closed.

It is now the Avalon, looks good so far. Not sure how well the restaurant part will do , but the bar is good and nice bar food.
Teacosy - 5 Dec 2008 08:33
Currently closed

Not sure if they're doing it up or not?
gold76 - 16 Sep 2008 13:57
Looks so lovely outside, but inside its had its soul ripped out, cavernous with horrible leather sofa's! Could do better!!!
EllyE - 11 Dec 2007 14:31
Very disappointing.
rockd1509 - 24 Sep 2007 23:58
Dropped in again a couple of weeks ago for a late afternoon pint. Once again, pretty decent. Not busy so you'd expect good service and thats what we got. Two good pints of Guinness served by a good looking blonde - lovely stuff.
atsoutar - 21 May 2007 16:50
Would be patrons getting off at Balham will be surprised by the trek to this pub - it is actually a few hundred yards from Clapham South underground station.

Service can be slow, and the pint I requested came in a glass with a tide-mark a quarter of the way down.

There is nothing about this place that is worth a special, or return, visit.
ONscotland - 16 Apr 2007 12:36
Like this place- bar staff can be a bit inattentive at times, regardless of how many people are in there, but they are unfailingly friendly, happy and usually pretty, a winning combination worth waiting for.
Can be a bit antipodean at times, with stereotypical aussies rampaging drunkenly through the pub clasping their bottle of wine (well it works out cheaper, doesn't it?) but overall, a cracking boozer.
Jackdawbob - 8 Mar 2007 10:51
Neatly done out, leather chairs, spacious (as previously noted) wooden floors...young Balham-y crowd, busy with people in watching the football. Beer was OK.
Muzthing - 21 Jan 2007 22:10
Not the worst pub Ive been to in the area but it was very quiet I dont know why but it has got a slightly pretenious feel
juzza - 20 Dec 2006 15:26
Only been in a couple of times but enjoyed it. Nice place
atsoutar - 20 Dec 2006 15:10
Nice atmosphere, if a bit 'yuppie ish'. Loads of nice seats, fair beer.
oldelondonmerchant - 12 Feb 2006 21:09
Really impressed by this place, nice leather chairs, spacious, maybe a bit too pricey but nice crowd- young and friendly
mattclapham - 7 Nov 2005 21:09
Go for the quiz. I don't normally like pub quizzes, but this one appears not to take its self seriously, and so is fun and entertaining.
Bar_Fly - 20 Mar 2005 13:09
Paid a quick visit, a bit rough.I wont be back.
howard - 21 Feb 2005 21:56
I just arrived back in Australia after two years in London and I have to say that The George is the best 'local' pub that I haunted in all my time there. The atmosphere was always very chilled, they played good 'mood' music, the staff have personalities the size of houses and the chicks that work there are HOT! Thanks to all at the George for making my Sunday hangover bearable
Mitch - 23 Sep 2004 04:44
How can they charge so much for a game of pool!!! Terrible. As expesive as central london. Don't really like the place at all.
Anna - 21 Sep 2004 19:57
Top pub in Clapham...decent food, nice crowd and barstaff who are always smiling...what more could you want in a local?!
Charlie - 6 Sep 2004 17:48
From someone who doesnt live anywhere near this pub, it's the first place I head to when I come south of the river! A great chilled out pub, a perfect social for any night of the week.
Gabs - 30 Aug 2004 17:23
The place is pretty cool. Excellent for sport. Get some top shelf ladies there too.. nice. The food is very average, pity ther are new chef's now - big drop in quality and VFM. Pity the staff are always drunk or hung over, should do something about that. Otherwise, top place for young and not so young.
Mr T - 27 Aug 2004 12:01
What is Rufus (20 May) on about?? u sure u got the right pub? difficult place to fault...great food, efficient service, friendly staff and a good crowd. well worth a visit. just get there b4 me if want any pinot grigio!
Rude Kid - 25 Aug 2004 16:44
Friendly and efficient staff, great comfy couches, and a sausage and mash that can conquer any hangover - what's not to like?! It's like being in a bigger and better living room than your own.
amanda - 25 Aug 2004 16:16
Awesome pub. My local and I love it, Great sofa's, atmosphere, TV and a great crowd.
Kyle - 26 Jul 2004 16:10
good pub for the football.
although the sound is always too low, it is spacious and so gets busy without being too packed. good size cinema screen with various other screens throughout.
good crowd, nice beer garden
steve - 2 Jul 2004 15:19
Well I really like this pub. And forget regular pub furniture the arm chairs and couches are the reason to go. I had a cracker burger and all my friends enjoyed their meals. Have to admit though that the staff seemed to be fast asleep.
Excellent place to kick back and relax.
shareen - 24 Jun 2004 17:08
Completely agree with the comments regarding food. Used to be very good but recently it has been terrible. Overpriced and below average pub food now.

Bar staff are also very slow when they decide to eventually work and the problem with the toilets really needs to be sorted.
Rufus - 20 May 2004 21:40
The food is now rubbish. They're obviously trying to cut costs but charge ridiculously high prices for low quality food. They couldn't even make nachos.

The bar staff are useless and the toilets disgusting.
Balham - 18 May 2004 11:58
Bar staff are useless and more intent on chatting to their mates than serve people, gents loo is a health hazard and the food is too expensive (although pretty good).
Change the barstaff, put some proper pub furniture in one or two areas, and add another pool table and we've got a quality local. Only an OK pub when it could be great.
Steve - 12 May 2004 17:05
The George, by far the best pub in Clapham/balham. The staff are great, the food is fantastic and the atmosphere is chilled out. Best chilled night out in SW London.

Jessica - 11 May 2004 20:51
the pub is really good and relaxing, but the bar staff are always drunk and annoying. the management really need to change the staff behind the bar, they are lazy and spoil the mood of the bar.
d pool - 30 Apr 2004 17:49
The food at the george has gone really downhill over the last few weeks Come on chefs lets get back to great grub
anonymous - 23 Apr 2004 18:52
Typical old style boozer, The toilets stink of p**s
The food is bland and most importantly the drink overpriced.

Avoid otherwise peg your nose on entry to the loo's
John Simpson - Balham - 20 Apr 2004 22:53
Never used to rate this place but it's arguably the most improved pub in Balham over the past few years.
Jez - 9 Apr 2004 12:08
Great pub! Always seems to be pretty full in there - guess numbers speak for themselves. Staff are fun and laid back, always up for a chat and a laugh. Will definately be back. Cheers guys and girls.
Adam - 14 Feb 2004 09:35
I can't believe the negative comments about the George. We moved to area about a year ago and were delighted to find a nice, friendly local with good food and good beer. The staff are chilled out and there is a nice big outside area for the summer, with heaters for chilly nights. Would just suggest getting up before 3 if breakfast is the issue - is that too much to ask?
Amy - 12 Feb 2004 20:12
Im a regular at the weekend to the george. They do seem to take breakfast off the menu early but the waitress explained to me that when they get very busy(which is every weekend)they have to as they offer such a huge choice it causes a large backlog in the kitchen so waiting times go up.

I say fair enough. They do offer a very large menu with a good selection. Serving breakfast until 2pm is good for me.

Who needs breakfast anyway when the Roast is so good.
lucy - 1 Feb 2004 11:54
Despite advertising that they serve breakfast until 3pm, they don't. They make it up as they go along and stop serving when they feel like it and finish serving at 'lunch-time.' They're rude about it too. Certainly not worth getting out of bed for.
Clare - 26 Jan 2004 15:20
Really good atmosphere - v chilled. Good beer too. The obsession with leather furniture is a little silly - you try balancing 4 pints of beer on a leather poof - but v comfortable. Pool table a big plus. My biggest gripe is the lack of air con - it is really, really smokey and the ceiling fans seems to do nothing. As a result, my main recollection is of waking up the next morning smelling like an ashtray. Shame.
Matt - 6 Jan 2004 13:15
I had a brilliant new year's eve at the George. Almost made me forget about the marketing industry's notorious treatment of monkfish.
Jack - 2 Jan 2004 14:34
'definite improvement since the makeover'.....you're having a laugh. This place was far better in its flat cap and whippet days. Is this the fate of all decent boozers in London? Ikea furniture and menus offering monk fish on a bed of cous cous is a terrible fate for any once decent pub, the saddest thing is we all buy into this marketing rubbish
Matt - 30 Dec 2003 15:05
It's alright; it's definitely an improvement since the makeover. The decor doesn't exactly scream 'PERSONALITY', but it is more individual, more thoughtful and less corporate than your All Bar Bloody Ones (whoever started that chain is going to burn in the eternal fires). I agree the leather armchairs and sofas are very stylish and kind on your behind and give the place a Sunday afternoon feel - but the seating does mean taking a large group of friends is a no-no, as you won't be able to all sit round one table together. I only tried a tiny wee bit of food as I was coming down at the time, but it was well tasty.
Gav - 3 Dec 2003 17:11
The George is the best pub in the area. Superb decor and a great sport watching pub. Food's not that bad either...a little pricey but you it's worth it. Good pool table too.
anonymous - 18 Nov 2003 15:04
I think these reviews must have been written by the four people who are the only people in there when I frequent this place! Maybe the managers best friends!?!?
I was there only last week and part of the stylish decor fell on my head while drinking my JD and coke- obviously very cheap design- possibly carried out by before mentioned bestfriends!!! AVOID.
Steph - [email protected] - 13 Nov 2003 14:11
rubbish! over-priced with no atmosphere.
Stuart - 13 Nov 2003 12:57
The George has been transformed. The interior decor has clearly been done by someone with naturally great taste rather than "paid for interior design" (as with a lot of bars these days) and the leather sofas and chairs are gorgeous. The Food is fabulous and the wine wonderful with a varied and interesting selection at great prices on both counts.
Keeley Orlandi - 7 Nov 2003 11:36
Really Great Pub. Really Great Food. All Great.
paul lawrance - 30 Oct 2003 21:27
I've never been on a weeekend evening so I can't comment on the bouncers. However, the QUIZ (on Tuesdays) is fantastic. Friendly crowd, and a humourous quiz that isn't taken too seriously. Afterall it's a pub quiz, not an exam.Go.
Angie - 29 Oct 2003 13:16
TRY THE LAMB SHANK
simo - 27 Oct 2003 22:28
The george, is a pub that you could sit and relax in all day, the sofas, music and sporting events caters for all. Of a night the atmosphere heats up and along with the music. Great crowd, no need for bouncers, everyone is there for the same reason, to enjoy and I have every time. The bar staff are a pleasure and always up for a laugh. The food compliments the venue and caters for all tastes. Definately the pick of Clapham's pubs.
cortnie - 24 Oct 2003 15:19
Awesome food and great furniture. The place to be to watch the Rugby/football - but be early coz its so busy at weekends. Really friendly antipodean staff are good for a laugh. Will definately be back. Cheers.
Dan - 24 Oct 2003 11:47
Great atmosphere, great food, great beer. Along with its recent refurb, this is the best pub in the area
alison - 23 Oct 2003 16:11
top place, beer nice and cold, good screens for sport and easy to roll home on the tube. would benefit from more dire staits being played though.
the humph - 23 Oct 2003 14:47
chilled atmosphere, always seem to leave in high spirits. Not sure if it's the staff or the booze. Cool settings at night, really comes alive of an evening and everything you could want from a local bar. Food fantastic (Try the lamb shank)Hot off to the owner.....
Marcus - 23 Oct 2003 12:55
It would appear other reviewers are easily offended as my friends and I have never had any problems with the bar staff or the pot plants?! But enough about the service and foliage this pub comes into its own during rugby/football matches - great atmosphere, excellent big screens and plenty of space. The weekend evenings are good too with good music, young(ish) crowd and nice big leather sofas to sit on. Always tempts my friends and I away from Northcote Road.
Matthew - 23 Oct 2003 08:48
Fab and chilled, good crowd, although Sundays is v busy as long as you get there early it is easy to end up leaving at closing. What more could a girl want from Sundays than Cosmos with her roast?!
Oh and Mondays is brilliant with a cool jazzy vibe!
Lizzy - 22 Oct 2003 18:12
Really like it ...good atmosphere, spacious and yummy food (if a little overpriced). Staff are painfully slow particularly when it's busy
Lis - 22 Oct 2003 17:34
bouncers at this venue are unnecessary and thuggish. bar staff are a bit slow to say the least and panic when asked for more than two drinks. decor is as bland as the food. the pub quiz (excellent quiz) is only thing worth going there for, except for the amount of abuse the quiz master takes from non-participants - can drown out the sound and no one stops this as long as the pub gets its tills full no doubt! very nasty venue indeed! even their pot plants smell of manure, possibly even something more offensive!
cat - 14 Oct 2003 16:56
Very roomy inside with nice decor but grumpy snappy barlady for no reason made me want to wish I never should have bothered. Pub wasn't busy just she was busy doing nothing (all over a packet of peking rib crisps)
Don't bother.
Jim - 13 Oct 2003 14:55
Was really disappointed, overpriced, bland- trying too hard if you know what I mean.
Will not be paying the George another visit anytime soon.
Emma - 17 Sep 2003 14:44
its recently been refurbished and is now excellent. got lovely comfy sofas, great food and pool tables. not sure why they have bouncers at the weekends though??!!
sophie - 28 Jul 2003 11:51
Very friendly bar staff
warren - 20 Jun 2003 21:52
every chair is a sofa and there are lots of them. very comfy pub and the food is excellent
jamie - 10 Jun 2003 20:28
A very decent and nice crowd sort of a pub. Nothing bad to say about it at all.....
charles Phnaphna - 15 May 2003 12:02
