user reviews of Liverpool One Bridewell, Liverpool

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Bridewell closed down and has re-opened again under new ownership. The owners used to run or be involved in Rigby's and the Fly In The Loaf. Little appears to have changed inside. You can still sit in the old cells. Ales were Kirkstall Pale Ale & Dexter, Banks's Amber, Thwaite's Wainwright & Wylam I Blame The Daylight. Worth a visit if passing.

A visit around 6pm on a Friday night to this attractive looking ex police station Bridwell that has individual cells inside which act as 'mini' booths with the doors remaining open!!

The bar area is quite small and is to your left as you enter, it has more of a wine bar feel to it than a pub. On the bar are 4 hand pumps each with a different ale on. I go for a pint of Sandinista @ 3.9% from local brewery Red Star. It was poured well but was not a great pint.

The wife and I took our drinks and when and sat in the front courtyard garden. Pretty busy here with various groups from student types to families and ladies who lunch!

A tick from the 2015 GBG but it wasn’t up to the standard of the other pubs I visited during the day and I have to note that the Gents' toilets stank of p**s, do they never clean them or use toilet duck!

Miraculously this pub was actually open yesterday lunchtime. But service was very slow. It took just over 10 minutes to get served, when it wasn't busy. They need more than one bar staff serving. The ale selection was Titanic Plum Porter, Liverpool Organic Pale Ale, JW Lees Marco Pierre White The Governor & Mad Hatter Hope Street Hop. I opted for a bottle from Mad Hatter, which was good. Real cider is no longer stocked. Still a decent place to visit for its novelty value. But if you do find it open, be prepared for a long wait!

Another failed attempt to visit the Bridewell yesterday. Closed this time due to electricity problems. Score stays as 0/10, as you'll rarely find this place open.

With just enough time before my train home, I made a beeline from the distinctly average Crosby Hotel (in Crosby, but not listed on here) to the Bridewell. I hadn't been for a while and thought I'd give it another try. Walked here only to find they had closed the pub for the day, due to a wedding for one of its staff members! I'll have to change my score to a 0/10, as no beer was available on this particular evening. I headed to Dawsons (another not yet listed on here) and regretted it.

I pride myself on not being a belligerent type and I'm always willing to give a pub the benefit of the doubt when it comes to ale quality but in the case of this establishment I cannot be so charitable. On a recent visit the selection of beers was so weird that in desperation I chose the Liverpool Organic supposing it would be some kind of bitter. Much to my chagrin I soon discovered it to be a concoction called Kitty Wilkinson Chocolate & Vanilla Stout which was the vilest thing I had ever tasted in my life. I tried my wife's Lancaster Raspberry Rosé which was as bad or even worse and both were served in glasses that looked like flower vases. The landlord, a sinister opaque type, put down the barman's recommendations to his lack of knowledge of real ales, him being a lager man. It seemed that the only bitter type of ale on offer was called Marco Pierre, which sounds more like a cheap white wine than a real ale. The place was empty of course and obviously going downhill.

This place recently closed down due to "blocked drains" and then re-opened with new management. It's still the same old Bridewell though and can get busy at times. The cramped interior of the "pub" doesn't help when it gets busy, especially when they show footy on the flatscreen TV's.

However, I've been in on Saturday evenings a couple of times and it's been empty.

It's still hit and miss as to whether they have any Liverpool One beers on. I want to come here more often but I can't see it happening.

Yesterday was my first visit to the Bridewell and I was reasonably impressed. As previous reviews have noted, it doesn't feel much like a pub, with the cells effectively cutting you off from other people. I was also a little disappointed that there were no Liverpool One beers on. Oakham JHB, Black Sheep Best, Darkstar Hophead & Major Cornpone's Ale Emporium Sir Garfield's Gold were the beers, with Westons Old Rosie also on. Certainly a place I will give another try.

Not sure what this pub is trying to be. It seems to throw a couple of real ales on for us 40+ types while pandering to shouty under 25's. A novel use of former holding cells, my last visit on Saturday yielded some mediocre cask beer from their own and other breweries. I was told that the "cells" were all full - I made a quip about that being expected in Liverpool (I live in Birkenhead FFS!!) and the barman took the hump. Can't say that I will be rushing back.

On our first visit late Thursday afternoon in search of grub we were served by a rotund gentleman who I recognised as the barman who used to be at the Baltic. We ordered real ale, fish and chips and bangers and mash. Both the beer and food were excellent and we left very satisfied. On the Saturday evening, however we found it so full that we had to go elsewhere ,which was not surprising as it was a wonderful evening and the garden was very popular. My only gripe is that it doesn't really feel like a pub; the cells seem too gimicky for my taste and the clientele rather "too boorish young office types", but this is not surprising given that it is surrounded by offices.

Great building but L/pool 1 ales were warm and out of condition on a recent visit.

Ahhhhh ok, this is where the old crew from The Baltic Fleet are hiding. Read up about it in the most recent edition of Merseyale so popped in on Saturday. What a great place!!!! Liverpool One Brewery beers plus 2 guests, 12 Belgians, 2 Belgians on tap including VEDETT!!!! Bit pricey @ 3.80 but a truly remarkable beer. Top quality food very reasonably priced, (Fish Finger Sarnie, delicious). Cocktails, original cells, courtyard. Possibly my new favourite pub in Liverpool. 10/10
