user reviews of the Cape of Good Hope, Oxford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Gets a bad rap because it's student infested at peak times - and these are the kinds of students who attended Radley and Stow to boot - but it's not too bad in an 'if you are an avid fan of Cold Feet' sort of way - so, tasteful with a couple of decent but predictable beers on tap - Brakspear's and London Pride on this occasion and the food - I once tried a pie - more than passes muster in a city where pub food generally outstrips that on offer at restaurants.

Proper relaxed pub with comfy sofas, very agreeable food, decent cider, friendly staff. We like.

Good location between town and Cowley / Headington, but don't go out of your way. The Star around the corner is better.

Mitchell and Butler venue that has had the M&B retro/gastro makeover, like many of their venues that were formerly run as 'Scream' joints. As such, you know what you will get - a decent range of lager, creditable range of real ale, and a pretty agreeable ambiance. I'm fairly partial to this line of pubs; they are certainly a vast improvement over the 'Scream' atrocities.

The new Cape of Good Hope is a nice place. While it is a little generic in its interior (new bar cum pub cum wine bar) it is a nice refit and the bar staff are nice, attentive and attractive (not that it really matters). A great selection of world beers, especially good seing some more Belgian and Bavarian beers on show than the usuals (try the Paulaner Pils). Especially good on a Friday when the crowd is of all ages, friendly and usually up for a good night both in and out.

How do you about changing the name of this pub?

This place is excellent now. Haven't eaten, but have enjoyed many of the range of great beers.

The downstares is good, bit the upstairs is quite special.

By the way, it has reverted to it's old name of 'The Cape of Good Hope'.

Its Changed.

Check this place out next time you are passing, and don't miss the upstairs bar and restaurant.

An excellent job has been done on the interior - no scream yellow in site.

Fantastic range of world beers plus plenty on independent Cask Ale. A brilliant job.

Never go to a pub with bouncers. Or one that doesn't serve beer.

My mate brother is the Chav king who apparantly rules this pub, "Dave the Londoner", his photo's behind the bar. Another gem of wisdom from said guy "until you've done a naked roundabout you're an amateur!" Not sure what that's all about, or if I want to know!

Best night out in the world.! Ive been a regular for three years now and can often be found with a jug of snakebite drinking with a straw!! No guesses which college i go to!?

Monday nights rock my world!

Busy and noisy, but alright for a quick pint before closing time. Once it's kicking out time, anyone not standing directly under the bar will be blinded by the floodlights they switch on. Subtle.

you monkies this pub is awesome - you have to be in the ouotc to realise why. as for st hilda's - the girls rock the joint on a regular basis...

one of the worst pubs on the Cowley road for student tossers, do yourself a favour and visit Beast at the temple or Amanda at the Brickworks, far better pubs without the chinless arseholes of this godawful hole. Bring back Mac and some decent live music.

I love this pub, its eactly what non-boring youths want I think. Big leather sofas, student prices, big screen, pool table, and the beer garden is your quiet place. They are also getting some brewery money so upstairs can be improved. It is a shame that theres no more live music, but its still a legendary night out.

A dreadful place that has been dreadful for many years. It used to be dreadful when it was the CApe of good Hope, but at least then it was empty of idiot students and had had the same name for two hundred years. Now it's full of the former and changes the latter with the waning and waxing of the moon. No beer of any note, no quiet of any kind, just the permanent noise of shouting idiots who couldn't tell a good beer from a mouth of bathwater. If it closed, would they still be around? I suppose they would. But close it anyway.

This is a shit shit place. It seems to pride itself on shitness - hence the closure of a decent music venue upstairs. My recommendation? Don't go - and then they might turn it into something more useful for the community - a pub would be good.

Absolutley cracking. Big screen TV, one of the best jukeboxes I've seen for some time and a classy pool table. They also do a top notch all day breakfast, which is almost as tasty as the barmaid we were chatting to! Not sure how pleasurable it'll during term time though - a stones throw from St Hilda's (the all girl college...)
