user reviews of the Pub, Leicester

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

It's been 18 months or so since my last visit to Leicester, and on the back of that, I made this my first stop. WOW! How things have changed! Beer range is reduced, the quality is not what it was, and the once popular Oakham house staple, Inferno, is obvious by its lack of prescence.
The decor is now somewhat dingier too.
Pleasant enough barman, not one I remember from my last, distant visit, explained that there had been a change of management about a year ago. Seems that the chap who set this up, originally over the road at Out of the Vaults, had left to go fixing bicycles, or something.
On this evidence, the cyclists gain is the beer drinkers loss.

Second visit to the Pub yesterday and I didn't quite enjoy it as much as the first, primarily because they don't appear to have real cider anymore. There was still a good selection of 10 ales - Millstone Stout, Harbour H Amber Ale, White Park Stumped, Sadlers Spider Princess, Traquair House Stuart Ale, Lymestone Seven Stone Weakling, Burton Bridge Golden Delicious, Brighton Bier South Coast IPA. Dorking DB Number One & Rudgate Brew No. 8 Cherry Pale. The Pub was also much busier than on my previous visit and it doesn't make for a particularly enjoyable atmosphere. I preferred the King's Head across the street and we found other better pubs this time around too. Reducing my rating as this one appears to have taken its eye off the ball.

Long narrow pub, friendly staff on my visit.14 real ales on that tasted good, not that i had all of them, and plenty of foreign bottles in the fridges. Wood furniture and sofas.

Not quite a traditionalists pub, more student bar than pub. The ale (Leatherbritches) was just about drinkbale. Wouldn't rave about the place there are much better alehouses in Leicester. Maybe I caught it on an off day.

I'd have to say that the Pub was our favourite pub we tried in Leicester yesterday. As a drinking environment, it does not rate too highly. The interior is a long, narrow space with the long bar towards the rear and a skylight at one end of the bar. There is a small outdoor patio for drinking at the front, overlooking possibly Leicester's finest pedestrianised thoroughfare. The real highlight of this place is the drinks selection. There are 15 handpulls. Not all were occupied on our visit, one beer was repeated and another had a cider. Nevertheless, the beer range was the most impressive we witnessed in Leicester - Salamander Black Eyed Boy Stout, Her Majesty's Pleasure & Let It Reign, Beowulf Finn's Hall Porter, Oakham Inferno, Dorset Brewing Company Yachtsman, Partners Ghost, Frys Ruby Chough, Elland Yorkshire Lager, Orkney Corncrake Ale & Isle of Purbeck Fossil Fuel & Purbeck IPA. The cider was Charnwood Appley Av Another. It was very pleasant. There is also a good range of world keg beers too, if you fancy something of that persuasion. Well worth a visit.

I agree entirely with the other reviewers. Great choice of beer and my pint was in excellent condition. Service quick and polite too!

Very modern pub which has an amazing range of real ale. I think I counted 14 on tap, wish I could have tried them all. Perfect temperature and condition.

My first visit here and it won't be my last. Super pub in a very attractive little part of town. Great selection of beers - on our visit it was mainly Oakham and Full Mash although there were something like 15 handpumps so there must have been other ales which we missed! Beer quality was fine; service was quick and friendly and the vegetable samosas were fiery! Meals are available. TV was on for footie but no sound and there is a pleasant little seating area at the front which was excellent on a fine day especially after we had just won 2-0 at football!!! Highly recommended.

Unbelievable ale selection. A dozen or so real ales from a wide variety of micros. High quality as well judging by the ones we tried. The building is huge and very comfortable, with plenty of seating. It is on the hugely attractive New Walk which is the envy of many other city centres as a green oasis.

Must be the cheapest pub in Leicester for decent beer (excluding witherspoons which is cheap and avoidable) long bar with 10+ real ales and lots of cider too decent crowd mix of 30-40 somethings and studenty types draws a rugby crowd when Tiger are at home
Bit of the beaten track and perhaps thats why its so good also do some decent food

Appears to be attempting the elusive blend of a traditional alehouse vibe in a contemporary space. How successful The Pub is in that respect depends on your taste for either, but my visit was enjoyable enough for me to make a return trip when next in Leicester. Although I found the minimalist interior with it's long corridor like bar and bare primary coloured walls (as I remember them) somewhat generic and uninspiring, it wracks up points for it's relaxed convivial atmosphere, highly efficient, eye pleasing service and an excellent range of ales. Good food too. All you could reasonably expect in fact.

This is the best Pub in Leicester. Good Beer, decent staff and a dour landlord!! What more could you want. Always a mild/stout/porter on and an ever changing variety of draft beer also makes it essential that you visit on a regular basis. Since moving a couple of years ago the client base has grown so local office staff, residents, students and CAMRA members are seen side by side now. Also has a good range of lager and bottle beers. Food is served at lunch time and dinna in the evening. Its all decent food and not the average pub stodge you normally find in a city centre pub.
Its a one off in Leicester as its trying to do something different by serving decent beer in a nice environment, without having rip-off prices. Again its the local CAMRA pub of the year! Well done to all concerned.

Far and away the best pub in Leicester. 15 cask ales, always well kept. Friendly staff. Better in my opinion than VIN IV/Vaults.

The Pub is nice enough inside, modern interior with plenty of seating, although can get busy in the evenings. The best thing about the pub though is the massive selection of well kept beer. Loads of hand pumps- even the keg beer offered is a little more interesting than normal, with a good selection of bottles too! But mostly the cask! Nice to sit outside on a sunny day and watch people walking down new walk if you are waiting to meet someone. For the selection of beer on offer alone you can see why it wins camra pub of the year awards etc. but a little soulless compared to a proper old school boozer- but that does mean you can suggest it to non ale drinkers as a place to go rather than some more of the grottier places in town to get a drink of "real ale"

I'm not really a regular, but pass this place time to time. As you approach 'The Pub,' it is a little unassuming from its appearance that it actually is a pub. It is located next to a burger bar and slightly adrift from the gut churning 'Revolution' or 'Revos' as it is known by the mindless youths that stagger from it. Inside, it is not what you would call contemporary decor, or classically pub themed, therefore, layout and presentation is not 'The Pubs' strong point. Few sofas scattered with tables and chairs which look like garden furniture combined with hideous red paint disappoint the look of this place. I think the Landlord needs to rethink his idea of styling. To 'The Pubs' credit, there is a nicely laid out bar area, with 15 hand pumps mainly from respectable local breweries, all regularly changing, a little cold for my liking, but in O.K condition. There is a good selection of lagers, fruit beers, Belgiums, Paulaner and Duvel Green on Draught. There were a few nice bar staff who knew about their beer, but recently I believe they have left and been replaced by less knowledgeable and somewhat rude staff. Last time I went there some God awful Ska music playing. I really think the idea and concept of the place has a real sweet spot, which Leicester could really do with, but this place can be a little 'Hit and Miss.'

A Bar called 'the pube' rather missing the point, disapointing. Rather sadly short changed and begrudgingly refunded my money, when challenged.

By the way about the food - 4.50 for a sandwich with some crisps is a joke when other pubs like the Swan do fish & chips and pizza for 5.50.

15 cask ales and another 17 keg fonts. Who needs a beer festival? Miles better than the Vin IV in my opinion.

Went to The Pub when it first opened and revisited it outside of the rugby season. They had a good mixed crowd of people in on a Saturday night from young local professionals to more traditional real ale fans. A first class range of ale on hand pumps, great European largers, and some really interesting bottled beers that I have not found elsewhere locally. Mein Host AKA The Celler Monkey and The Brains of the Operation have now recruited staff to match the quality of the beer they serve. A vast improvement on "over the road" every City needs a pub like this.

Beer range now up to speed, though still doesn't seem to be quite as exciting as the VIN IV / OOTV range used to be.

Condition is usually pretty solid, though I have encountered a few hazy ales - more I think due to a slightly colder dispense than some other pubs, rather than any issue with the actual keeping of the beer.

Recent redecoration and addition of some of the old sporting memorabilia to the walls has lifted the place, as has the decision to do away with the low leatherette seating in the alcove.

Sadyly though, nothing as yet has come of the Beer Festival which the licensee had previously indicated was in the pipeline...

I've decided I love this place. It took several visits but I have to say it's just what Leicester needed. I know it has an excellent line-up of hand-pulled ales with regulars from Oakham, Beowulf but the keg selection is great too. Duvel Green, Anchor Steam, Freedom Lager and Organic, Florette to name a few of the 15 or so taps. Recently redecorated so it's not all beige.

Slowly warming to this place. Kept a lot cleaner than the management's previous establishment (Out Of The Vaults/ Vin IV). Huge selection of imported keg beers and bottled beers and massive range of well-kept ales. The regulars are by Beowulf, Oakham Ales, and Leatherbritches. There is quite often Beowulf Dragon Smoke Stout or Finn's Hall Porter. Free Wi-Fi. As for the place itself, it's a bit souless. Recently won Leicester CAMRA pub of the year. Worth a visit.

You can't fault The Pub for the range of beer that it has on offer. Nice location on New Walk and very pleasant to sit outside and watch the world go by. Deserves to succeed.
