Good Ale, good food served by very friendly, attentive and welcoming staff very clean and comfortable - well worth a return visit.

Rude staff and appalling food. Ordered steak ciabata for my daughter and wife and fish and chips for me. Steak had to be cut using a knife and fork and was full of gristle. Fish and chips served on wooden board so got cold very quickly, chips overcooked. Staff unwilling to take drinks orders at table so food got colder whilst getting more drinks. Suggested to manager about taking drinks orders at tables. "We don't do that", my response "that's why I am suggesting it". His response, "didn't you hear me, we don't do that" When asked if the food was OK, said it wasn't, in fact it was poor, and waitress said, "Oh thats good then"! If you have lasted this long - then don't go anywhere near this place. No wonder UK has a bad reputation for service - Appalling!

drank a lot of GK IPA in here over a long weekend, the beer was bang on every time although the rather exotic beer pump didn't inspire confidence

A roast dinner was generous and good although the roast potatoes were way past their best

The pub is a bit clean and shiny but the beer garden was satisfactory, I'll forgive a lot if the beer is spot on

One of the oldest pubs in my hometown.
Question:Why are Greene King intent on making all their pubs seem like a naff chain member?
What they've done to the interior in this sterilisation-of-character process is shocking.
But yes,the beer is excellently kept and the average typical age of the punter has recently risen above 6th form age to make this one of the better 'authentic' pubs to visit in town.
Nice large beer garden for the summer too.

Situated virtually next door to the Greene King brewery, I found this place to be one of the better GK pubs in a town that is littered with them. A decent selection including the elusive St Edmunds Ale (IPA / Abbott / Speckled Hen make up the numbers) although on my initial visit a few months earlier they only had IPA available inexcusable given that they could lob a few fresh barrels over the fence. It was my quest for the St Edmunds Ale that saw me directed here and it would seem that, at the time, this was the only place in town that stocked it. I tried both the Northern and Southern heads and the difference is very apparent. Apparently the Northern variety is the most popular. As for the pub, the 17th Century building was originally called the Mermaid and the house next door was originally the home of Greene Kings chief brewer. The interior has an unusual layout with a small front bar and a larger, conservatory type bar at the rear. An unusual front passage at the front of the pub leads to a couple of side rooms with pool and decent size plasma screen. There are various small nooks and crannies that are used for rather unimaginative purposes and could really be put to better use. At the rear is a large paved beer garden that backs on to the Brewery. Worth popping in even if you are not particularly a Greene King fan although my visit was before the previous posters mention of it being refurbished.

Currently being refurbished. B&B to the side looks pretty dismal from the outside (try the Old cannon instead).

Large decent GK pub with a quizzer, usually the only pub in town with any atmosphere.

Usual Greedy King fayre, although I do remember an Adnams being on offer (I'd had a few by this point).

Worth a stop.

"Highly recommended?" A baffling conclusion to reach since while it's undoubtably a splendid building it has become a wide-screen sport bolt hole for chain-smokers....

and by a country mile the worst b&b we have ever stayed in - grubby curtains, soiled carpet and stained bedspread, battered furniture, dismal lighting

no-one around to serve breakfast....

b&B in Bury? not here unless you are really, really desperate and the YMCA hostel round the corner is full.

I traveled from the states to stay at the D&P for a wedding... Staff was Awesome, pub was great at reasonable prices!!

Would highly recommend the place for dining, drinking or staying overnight in the rooms.

Just wish I could get more of that great beer in USA!

Pleasant Greene King pub near the brewery with a warm heritage feel.

Nice Greene King pub right next to the brewery. Outside seating, conservatory area and quite roomy inside (as best as I can remember after several pints of Abbot). Reasonably priced, spacious accomodation too with great breakfasts.
