Went here to see a band play called Even After recently. Band were good, not so the beer. Oh dear. Being an ale drinker, had to change sides and drink lager, and beer IPA was toooo warm. Seems friendly?? staff could smile a bit more. Locals seem friendly?? Will i go back? highly unlikely. no wonder this is the only pub left in the village. Shame really.

Does Joe Birney still rule, is grumpy still the manager, does Bub still know nothing about football, are the sausages still famous,is Crusty still drinking here and has The Silver Back been spotted recently ?. Thats what we want to know!!!

The reason I'd describe this pub as dullish is the old fashioned manners in which the people in here use. I am not saying theres anything wrong with being polite, but they do all seem rather stuck in there way, funny old folk.

Visited on a Saturday afternoon recently and found it better than the below reviews suggest - three or four interesting real ales, although as I was on the softies I can't speak for how well-kept they were. But I thought the atmosphere was fine and there looked to be a nice garden out the back. Would return.

Interesting comments of late ! As an old Guildfordian who once visited this pub fairly regularly due to relatives who lived nearby, nothing appears to have changed a great deal ! Also, I strongly suspect a smidgen of social prejudice is now afoot after reading through these reviews ! This coupled with poor beer does not bode well for the future !! No rating left as it's about 4 years since our last visit and the light soup lunch we had (tomato) was cold and tasted more like liquefied puree. As for the old Green Man, best consigned to history and quietly forgotten. It too 'fell off the perch' long ago !

I went into this pub before New Year which was the first time in ages. Very disappointing. Had a poor pint. Pub was pretty empty. I won't hurry back.

I like it in here.

Locals can be a bit intimdating, but it's basically nice.

Good band on a Saturday night. Not bad quiz night on the Wednesday.

Could be a great pub and being the only one in Burphan now it should be. But its not.
It stinks of the gents loo when your in the middle of the bar,the service is piss poor and the sausages are crap.
And Joe Birney does rule OK.

Most of the female bar staff spend the night in a daze or would rather chat to the irritating locals who seem to rule the place.
Trying to get served even when no one is waiting is sometimes a challenge.
Beer is average and having ate there once - won't be doing it again.

The food is one of the features of this pub as it offers excellent value for money and good quality. Staff are also very friendly. The decor could do with updating inside but if its a sunny day the beer garden is more than adequate. Maybe a better choice of beers would be my only other criticism.

Don`t trust anonymous comments, again if your going to praise a place put your name to it or we will think you have something to hide (band member).
Pub has lost it, well from what it used to be anyway.
Service very poor.

To be honest, when I read the last comment I thought that it must be from a musician from Frayed Not wanting to promote their band BUT I went to the pub on the 23rd June and the pub was friendly with a great fun atmosphere and the band were amazing. Wouldn't expect not 2have2 pay for this calibre of entertainment and yet a free night! Played all music and I didn't feel out of place coz there were 20's to 60's drinkers in the pub drinking and dancing. Best night in a pub for a long time. Highly recommend.

Great atmosphere at weekend. some good bands on Saturdays, Check out Frayed Not Saturday 23rd June

We stopped using this pub a year ago - but had been regulars for many years - the smokey atmosphere - and barring of colourful local characters has left the pub dead in the water. Beer was too variable in quality to be a decent local. Pity its the only one in the village. Thumbs down.

I am surpised by some of these reviews. We are regulars at the pub and have always had a very enjoyable time there. The staff are in fact very friendly, the food excellent and the TEA beer fantastic. The quiz on a Wednesday night is good value, too.
couldwehaveaneel - 28 Oct 2006 10:58
The pub itself is okay and infact has a load of potential. When you state on your sign "food served all day" make sure it is. The garden leaves much to be desired its not worth letting a dog lose in let alone children....clean it up! Friendly staff.

Locals are in deep crap now that this is the only pub in the area,im sure people could have more fun playing on a mined beach than being in here.Sevice very poor but i don`t think its the staffs fault they do their best but with no help from the managers.Iwill score it one for being there.
Beersupper - 13 Aug 2006 10:12
Happiness is not a word you can use in this place.Landlord just can`t be bothered to be pleasent
anonymous - 29 May 2006 09:45
The Anchor is our local and the food and beer is good so you would expect us to be regulars. However, it is just not big enough so when the weather is not good enough to use the garden it gets very crowded. Conversely, if the garden is in use there are too many children. New Years Eve was ticket only, a practice we deplore. Is it legal ?

I am looking for Steve Stacey. He used to go to the pub almost daily, so did I. In fact I used to work there in the early 90's. I am now living and working in Sunny Marbella Spain. Any old friend is welcome to contact me and visit me. If you find Steve for me tell him I would like to see him soon.
The_Swede - 26 Sep 2005 13:50
This is a decent place, a little bit of a walk from Guildford. They do serve some good beers. The pub quiz does seem to be for the slightly older generation. You really will need to know your music, if you dont you may as well call yourself the boring team
aleman - 18 Apr 2005 10:57
Update for you:

Now has Hog's Back Tea permanently (great beer, but not kept all that well here), music quiz on Sunday.
Vindaloo - 12 Apr 2005 15:09
As an ex regular, now safely living in excess of one hundred miles distant, and ten years later I can assure you that there can be life after the Anchor. Rehab was tough for the first year but I'm still here. Is the dart board still the centre of all local life? I'd love to know but I daren't go back.
exregular - 22 Feb 2005 12:30
A good after-work pub. Great chips. Nice staff.
stargirl - 6 Feb 2005 23:29
Can someone else confirm the Milosevic lookalike or is it just us?
Vindaloo - 2 Dec 2004 14:11
Food is excellent, not just the sausages. Courage beer is to my taste and there is usually a guest beer. Much amusement can be had just watching the locals, who are a seriously weird bunch. One of the barmaids stands out by looking and sounding like a normal person.
Peter Burton - 10 Sep 2004 07:16
The previous reviewer has got it right when he said it's a locals' pub... There are two types here...

If you want to blend in a trip to JD sports is in order, football shirts are good too. There were also lots of terminal alcoholics, most of whom were so drunk they could hardly talk. One emitted some form of noise at us, I think it was an attempt at speach. Another decided he didn't want to sit on a stool and that I should give up my chair, he signalled this by standing (well as best he could) in total silence and staring at me until I asked him what he wanted.

The only upside to this pub is that it's not the Green Man just down the road.
Nick - 4 Apr 2004 20:32
Nice local pub, allegedly "famous for its sausages", Slobadan Milosevic lookalike is a regular.
Vindaloo - 13 Aug 2003 13:02
