please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Another quiet pub, somewhat off the beaten tourist path. There were more locals here though and they seemed friendly enough and interested in my pub crawl of York! Leeds Pale Ale, Caledonian Deuchars IPA, Ossett Yorkshire Blonde & Roosters Yankee were the ales. Cider was Old Rosie.

Never had a problem with the clientele on my four or so visits. 5 cask ales, impeccably kept. Not worth a detour for, but worth popping in if it's your local.

Somewhere in here is a really good pub trying to get out. My return visit on early Saturday evening saw nearly all the punters sitting outside despite the showery weather. This could have been due to the character perched at the bar who once my presence was noticed immediately launched into a rant that sounded like a dress rehearsal for an English Defence League after dinner speech. Still, he was easily ignored by walking away and I managed to enjoy an acceptable pint of Rudgate Battleaxe. I think the Tap is worth persevering with.

Spacious pub with plenty of seating.
Popped in for a pint early on Friday evening and was not impressed with the characters at the bar making inappropriate remarks to female customers.

Very glad to report that this fine house has re-opened and is as good as ever. Still stocks Old Rosie real cider.

Closed down!? That's a damn shame, I always enjoyed my visits here. Here's hoping for a saviour.
ILooklikeme - 27 Nov 2010 13:57
Closed - the local paper's website says company has gone bust.:(

The best pub in York.We ll, one of them. I was in here at least 4 or 5 times a week when I lived round the corner. I was in here more often than my own front room. Great, ever-changing beer selection.

This is my local and one of the best pubs in York - even when dogs are on the premises (the canine variety.) Good range of well-kept ales - the Rooster's Yankee in renowned.

Muran,

I take exception to your comment.
"If 1953bloke doesn't like dogs, that's his problem but he cannot knock dog owners or a pub because it has a relaxed policy"
because it is typical of the selfishness of dog sentimentalists. "we like dogs so if you dont you have a problem". well where is the logic in that? What you are saying is "I'm doing this and if you dont like it F+++ O++" well I dont like it and I'm not visiting that pub again. This assumption that dogs everywhere is NORMAL has to be challenged. It's just how it used to be with smoking "I'm smoking and if you dont like it you have a problem". Well eventually society realised that freedom doesn't mean I can do what I want as you seem to imagine.

Great boozer with friendly atmos & staff. It's a pleasure to find a pub that allows you to have a swift pint or two with the company of your DOG after a hard days toil. Good selection of beers and the occasional live band makes it a fantastic local... will miss it when we move! There should be more pubs like this!!

The Tap & Spile, York, is a great pub. One of the things that makes it great, is that after a long walk with the dogs, you can go in & refresh both yourselves & the dogs, including snacks for the dogs. If 1953bloke doesn't like dogs, that's his problem but he cannot knock dog owners or a pub because it has a relaxed policy.
If it's the 'German Shepherd' I'm thinking of, which it isn't a German Shepherd, then the chances are it & his owner came in after service had been stopped. Any dog mess outside the pub will not be due to dog owners at the pub but rather those who use the Jobcentre just up the road! We all know they use Staffies as status symbols!
Muran - 13 Feb 2010 17:46
This Pub is spoilt by one thing. They allow DOGS inside! I was happily drinking there one afternoon when I got the shock of my life as a man came in with a huge German Shepherd. The barmaid begain feeding it bar snacks. This in a pub that serves food. All I could imagine was what if every dog owner decided to drop in at the same time? And what about the health and safety implications? Needlesss to say I havent been back. PS watch your step on the pavement outside as I have observed this is used as a dog toilet.

Love to visit this pub while in York and enjoyed a meal while here this time. Lovely steak and mushroom suet pudding was pie of the day. Enjoyed Wylam Haugh Porter and Goose Eye Chinook. Usually find a beer new to us at this pub with its good selection of micro guests.

Plenty of ales as you would expect. Large beer "yard". Great Roosters Yankee.

A decent pub with well kept ales and a decent sized beer 'garden' to the side and rear. Outside the walls so a bit further afield than many pubs, but still worth a visit.
alexw - 25 Aug 2009 20:01
Probably my favourite pub out of the many to choose from in York.enjoyed a couple of old rosies ciders in the beer garden.friendly natives and staff and a good range of ales available.Dogs allowed in too, which is nice. Will def use regularly upon my return to York.
toolster - 29 May 2009 09:32
Roosters Yankee always on here, plus five changing guests, the names of which are the first things you see upon entry. Now that's dedication the craft. Hugely friendly staff who clearly take pride in their work too. Probably doesn't quite get its due to it being 'out-of-the-way'(as much as is possible in York) but that's other people's loss.

Late review from November and glad to be back in York to revisit some of the good real ale pubs there. This is certainly one of them, and we enjoy the comfort of the library room. Great beers from Acorn, Wylam and the new Captain Cook brewery.

One of my favourite pubs in York. Has long had an excellent reputation for good quality real ale (The Rooster's Yankee is the best I have tasted) and also decent food. The staff are attentive and friendly, and there are always books and CAMRA pamphlets to read as you relax in front of the fire. Apparently there is also poker on a Sunday night now too. It loses a point (9/10) for the shameful split leather on the seats in the front room which have not been repaired for several years. It's worth putting up with this one small issue, however.

Nice big pub. Friendly staff. Probably popular with students. Had a good pint of Cromptons Endeavour
doncaosdelanada - 28 Mar 2008 21:24
Always like to call into this pub when in York, and enjoyed an Outlaw and Daleside beer this time. Sat in the panelled room with the books, and actually got a couple of the books down for a browse as it was quiet in there. Always wanted to do that. Friendly staff and fine ales.
gillhalfpint - 3 Jan 2008 13:16
A bit dead in here on a recent visit but the beers were as good as ever.
MartynT - 16 Mar 2007 18:15
Decent pub with a good selection of beers and friendly staff.

Been a bit dead and atmosphere-less on my previous visits though.
hadleighhammer - 12 Jan 2007 19:46
An interesting pub with a good beer range. I feel it could get smokey but seems quieter than the city pubs being just outside the town walls at Monks Bar.

Caraman - 4 Jan 2007 10:04
Visited on a Saturday, so quite busy - so why there was only 1 member of staff behind the bar is a mystery.

Good selection of ales, and a fairly good menu.

Good sized car park - important in this city - if only others knew how to park !!!!
Vulpecula - 5 Dec 2006 21:09
Very good service, good selection of ales, invariably well kept. Varied clientele. One had returned often, and almost always enjoyed the experience.
dirigent - 30 Oct 2006 09:54
Nice pub just outside the old city walls. Got their own library room. Six hand pumps with decent selection of ales.
rune - 29 Aug 2006 21:56
Five real ales on tap friendly bar staff free papers to read and quiet on an afternoon was told it gets very busy. Watch out for the live bands in the car park in August and the Pork Pie festival in September.
postiebob - 5 Jul 2006 14:39
Had a top pint of Roosters Yankee here-spot on.The chap who served me was very keen even asking if I wanted to read one of the papers .Sat in the Cosy 'front room'.
Theres an added quirk you get by coming here.At the traffic lights by the walls-you can see the old advert painted on the gable end of a house, advertising 'Bile Beans'-never fails to bring a smile to my face...No wonder Heinz came to dominate that market!

EdgarBriggsMI5 - 7 Jan 2006 11:04
I have only been in once for a quick pint. Landlord or barmen or misplaced passerby or whatever he may have been was polite and instantly helpful with a bit of character at the same time.

beer was good, fair few ales.

didnt see any obvious students.

interesting building too.

I visited this pub with friends on 16th July, paid for my drinks order while the barman was still pulling them, but when I was walking away from the bar I was accused very loudly of not having paid. I insisted I had, the very stroppy youth insisted I hadn't. After checking the till roll he saw that i had paid and just shrugged his shoulders - when I sugested he appologise he refused saying that because he worked there he didn't need to say sorry. He then told the other two men working with him that I wanted him to say 'sorry' and they all had a good laugh, his next comment was that if he said sorry for all the mistakes he made he'd be appologising all day! So the pub now has the most arrogant bar staff to go with the miserable landlord - I won't be going there again.
Helen - 20 Jul 2004 21:47
The good news is the miserable landlord has gone! There has been a minor facelift and a definite improvement in atmosphere. The beer's a little pricey at times, but very well kept.
anonymous - 9 Jun 2004 14:25
Olde-style boozer (for which read `looks scruffy') with good selection of guest ales plus quite a few bottled continental beers. Popular with students, but don't let that put you off. Although a bit off the beaten track it can still get pretty busy at weekends.

Good beer and food (despite being just across the road from the best curry house in York!) but let down by possibly the world's most miserable landlord.
