user reviews of the Eddy, Brighton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

AVOID!! Reviews elsewhere speak highly of the Sunday roasts but my advice would be don't go near the place later in the evening.
I'd seen an acoustic music night advertised and went to check it out with my girlfriend, who is partial to a bit of folk.
We wanted to support the bunch of earnest musicians but everything was ruined because of the leery drunks at the bar f-ing and c-ing at the top of their voices. The bar staff did nothing - and even continued to serve one pisshead who crashed off his stool in an obvious drunken stupor.
We were sitting at the back near the toilets and feared for our lives when some of them stumbled past us, presumably to be sick.
We lasted about half an hour and made a quick exit, only to be confronted by the same behaviour outside by the same low life who were now shouting down the neighbourhoood whilst smoking and chucking dog ends all over the place.

Great pub for watching football. Food looks pretty good but haven't tried it yet myself. Ale selection is pretty poor.

NIce staff, great food and cosy.

A bit of a sports pub. Can be very noisy. If you fancy a drink you'd be a better off at the Battle of Trafalgar, if it's food you're after go to the Yeoman.

I've had sunday lunch here on several occasions and found the food to be excellent and the portions very generous. I have since moved away and have not visted in nearly 18 months so It may of gone to bollocks in the meantime, I hope not as I always found it quite pleasant.

Incredibly noisy, poor selection of drinks. All style and little substance.

Lacking in atmosphere, awful food, awful service. Amazingly (pre-smoking ban) i had seen the staff smoking BEHIND the bar. oops.

Not what it used to be. Lacking in almost every respect and far too exepensive for what it is. House wine 4.15 a small glass and 3.8% ABV bitter 3.10 a pint

This pub used to be kickin but has really lost its way recently. The food is good but its bar staff are far more interested in each other and themselves than serving people. Theres now really bad cheesy music and the place looks like it needs a good clean. Its always been pricey but used to be worth it. Its a shame that another one's bitten the dust and what happened to Jay?

The staff are alright without being friendly, it gets really packed on the weekends and there is a general feeling of agro in there with large groups of ape like men weighing everyone up. Also if you go in with a lady friend she will get hit on a lot even if she's obviously with someone, which give a special 'am i going to have to do something about this if they don't back off' atmosphere. Lovely

Been to this pub twice in the last several months. By the looks of things it trys to make out that its something special in Brighton. However all I saw was sport on TV, bar staff more interested in talking to their friends then serving us mere punters, and pouty "urban young professionals".
A good pub is where you can go in a be treated witha smile and read your paper over a pint without the feeling that you are not very welcome. This is not one of them. Shame.

Good pub, but great shame that they are wasting water during a time of severe water shortage, hosing down the basement area in front of the pub - they should set a good example and conserve water, not waste it like this.

The Edinburgh, The Tap & Spile, Game of Life, and now The Eddy ... It's OK as pubs go, and the food can be brilliant. But the ventilation is poor, the decor's a bit gloomy and prices tend to be on the high side.

How many name changes does this pub need? (worst - Game of Life with awful mural). It used to be great but now it seems to be different each time I go in. Sometimes its a good male/female ratio and good atmosphere, sometimes its cold with barely a handful of drinkers and othertimes its packed, horribly loud and too many 'aving it type lads. Plus wheres the pool gone? The space it took is a rubbish place to sit. A definate plus is Foxy from the Belle Vue worked here - where has she gone?! One other problem is they sometimes play tunes while the footy is on the TV.

Take a torch. Very dark and
dingy. Good beers but watch
your change ( perhaps why the
lights are out? ).

A fine pint of Adnams to be had here. Draught Becks means no hangover. The food is extraordinary but it would be nice to see what you are eating - a bit too dark and gloomy.

8 points for the beer-keeping.

It was the 'Game of Life' - illustrated by a truly atrocious mural - before it was the Eddy, during it's spell as part of the Zel clan. Solid boozer.

I don't remember it being called the "Game of Life" - when was that? It was once the Edinburgh, then the "Tap and Spile", and now the Eddy.

Some of the chairs could do with re-upholstering.

A welcome retreat from the tasteless style bars on the cside, good beers make seeking out this beauty worthwhile.Management do possess facial hair though.

A recent refurb has seen this place become a welcome retreat from all the new bars in Brighton city centre. Not that it doesn't get busy - just has that cosy friendly feel about it.
