user reviews of the Faversham, Leeds

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The previous interlocutor from a decade ago bemoaned the lack of real ales, a problem that has been right royally revolved with an excellent choice of four from various Yorkshire breweries. The beers tend to be craft rather than cask but were in good condition including a session IPA. I had an excellent Ploughman's board while the decking remains a great place to drink in the sunshine. Only quibble is slightly soulless, modernised décor but it's a great option when visiting Leeds University

There is a spacious outdoor decking area here, which is handy on a sunny day, but this pub fails the most important test for a pub...there are no real ales available.
Hence I won't be hurrying back.

`When I was a lad`.....this was actually a one room hotel....although full of goths!.....now it looks like you should pay a cupla quid for a laser gun as you go in & just shoot the baddies as they appear from the partitions.....ORISITJUSTME...Probably!

The faversham has recently been sold and is undergoing refurbishment. It's looking quite promising at the minute. It looks so much brighter and the new beers are damn good. There are two new pool tables, pinball and one of those tabletop donkeykong machines. The soound system looks to be getting a long overdue overhaul and the food is looking up too. Word on the street is that the guys fmro the HIFI have bought the place. Dont know if thats true but if it is then im sure good things are to come!

Good for daytime drinking if you're on campus. Food isn't all that special, more bar snacks really.

I remember when this place got bought out in 2000. The family ran out of money to pay the brewers, and for about six weeks they didn't serve any booze on tap. Eventually they had to sell up (for a lot less than they'd been offered only about a year before) to the same people who messed around with the Skyrack, and it changed from the Faversham into ...the Fav - what is it with punctuation in pub names? You can tell it used to be a great pub, and there are worse places to spend a lazy Sunday, but it's a shadow of what it was even a few years ago.

This pub claps its own customers' cars.

The Fav hides behind the centre section of Leeds University, not far from the Worsley Building and Charles Morris Halls. It has a long and colourful past, which is certainly not over, despite the disappointing recent takeover by a big brewery.

It was originally converted into a hotel in 1949, long before the University we know today existed, and played host to many celebrities: Spike Milligan being a regular visitor. In the late 60s it was granted the first Free House licence in Leeds since before the Second World War, and from here it took its first steps into the music scene.
It was during the mid 80s that the building was refurbished to a similar state that we see it today; half bar, half club; and a 25kW sound system was designed and built in America for the venue. Technical advisor on the project was Angel Moraes, and it cost eighty-five thousand pounds - which is stunning for such a small venue. From that point the venue has seen everyone from David Morales to the Scratch Perverts, Carl Cox to Sasha. A spiritual home for multiple musical revolutions of the past 20 years.

The building boasts a huge length of bar on the back wall, even serving a hand pull and (pricey) Hoegaarden. Looking away from the bar, to your right is the sound desk, to your far left is the small stage, with the dancefloor in between. Beyond the dancefloor are the front tables, beyond which is a further room. To your right is a snug and large room, thorugh which you can find the conservatory. A mini-maze of possibilities.

Up until recently, and throughout its entire history, The Faversham had been owned by the same family. At the moment, it is pretty much the same, so go and check it out before the pub chains refurbish. The sound system still remains, although it may be a little while until it begins to play tomorrows music again. For the moment, check it out, and wait for it to be sold and restarted again. You can't keep a good pub down.
