user reviews of the Churchfield, Acton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I had lunch here today with a friend, and wasn't very impressed. The building's very nice, but the staff were surly and not particularly efficient - my friend was over charged and barely got an apology. The Deuchars IPA was gassy and not particularly chilled, and as a vegetarian who loathes goats cheese the only option apart from very expensive main courses was salad and chips. This place definitely has potential, but they need to work on their attitude, sort out the beer and improve their menu before I'll go back

Went in for a quick one on Sunday night. Nice atmosphere, and a surprisingly pleasant outside area considering it's bang on a busy road through Acton. They served a decent pint of Deuchars IPA.

I'd like it more if they had more than one real ale on and if the rating box allowed I'd knock off half a point for the eye-watering price of the Deuchars they did have, but it won't stop me going back.

Normally when you think "station pub" you think of beggar-infested kips like the Hamilton Hall in Liverpol St or that grotty shithole at the end of Waterloo station. This place is the complete opposite. Walk up here from Acton park, over the level-crossing and you could almost imagine you're not in London. Ish. Not eaten here beyond a bowl of chips but the food looks nice. Beer is good and service friendly, if slightly harried on a Friday night (understandably it gets busy, it's popular).

Food was very good in the restaurant, and the pub is open and reasonably relaxed. I'd still say this is the best pub in the area for quality of food/drinks and service.

Had my 35th party in the upstairs dining room - absolutely brilliant time had by all! We had a whole range of canapes and bellini's and marguerita's! Food and drinks were of the highest order and great value. Every detail was planned by the owner/proprietor (who is a charming and very friendly woman) whose knowledge and suggestions were so very helpful. Prior to the party we were treated to a wine & canape tasting which allowed us to pick what we wanted and enjoyed. Highly recommended as a pub, restaurant and party venue.

Staff are great management quite unfriendly and a little weird! Food can be expensive, but most of the time tastes great.

Upstairs has a great restaurant, and the service in general is good. Downstairs feels, well just like a train station waiting room. Great sunny outside area right next door to the station.

Bottled beers galore, with a few lagers on draft. Wine is good, but the house wine is to be missed! Pay an extra 1 its well worth it.

Absolutely brilliant pub. Love it to bits. All the staff are great and friendly - Nicki and Tash + always make me feel welcome since I moved here. The fortnightly quiz is always a giggle, so I've heard.
14 out of 10.

Prices have increased since my last review (August 2005) and happy hour is now just one hour, but this is still the best pub in the area for quality of food/drinks and service. Good selection of beers including European and Belgian bottled beers, Staropramen, Leffe, Artois Bock. Pub quiz on alternate Tuesdays with cash & drinks as prizes.

Bar food is good quality if a little expensive. House wine is drinkable at around 12 per bottle.

I've just moved in down the road from the Churchfield, and it came recommended by my flatmates. Good selection of beers, reasonable prices (for London), music that's not too loud, and friendly staff.
What more could you want from a local?

Nice relaxed downstairs bar and excellent courtyard at front, great in the summer. Nice old railway building which has been nicely done out. The upstairs restaurant is great with modern European food and good service.

As a pub it is relaxing. However be warned: it you order a Portobello Mushroom Burger, all you get for your 7.00 (+-) is a burger roll, piece of lettuce, tomato and one mushroom, oh yes and a toothpick through the lot. My order came, I opened it up to put some salt on it, and noticed - no patty!!! So I complained, but to no avail. They did not want to know. The poor bar lady did not know what to do - she phoned the manager, the manager said "tough". She went to the chef, the chef said "tough", however she could see my point of view. A burger is according to the dictionary: "A sandwich consisting of a bun, a cooked beef patty, and often other ingredients such as cheese, onion slices, lettuce, or condiments. Often used in combination: a cheeseburger." They now have a V on the board menu inside. No refund, no apology. Will never eat there again. Oh well, tough!

Nice relaxing pub, great for a night after work with friends.
Pity about the rude american bar staff.

Not too expensive (particularly in happy hour 5pm-7pm). Good beer, decent pub food and outdoor drinking in the sun. What more could you want from an Acton pub? Also burgers are highly recommended!

Went back again recently - excellent place, shame I live a bit too far away to make it my local. Organic burger in the bar is wicked!

Stumbled across the Churchfield recently, helped me pass some time whilst the trains were up the spout. Pleasantly surprised at how impressive it looked inside, and I am sure the garden must be lovely when weather allows. Food was first class, interesting menu and not over priced. I have since returned, and will continue to do so.

A lovely quiet pub with good beers and interesting food. Lovely building too, in the old railway station.

Really relaxed and friendly. Food is great value. Reccomended gastro-pub for the Acton area. Plays good music too.

Not convinced the staff are entirely the most objective people to be commenting. Went back recently and the beer was very good. Had a look at the upstairs dining room. Not poor or anything but whoever thought it was amazing clearly has no great ambition in interior decoration.

great place, lovely staff.. (me being one of them).. come and say hi in relaxed, trendy (but not precocious), beautifully restored building.. well chuffed i'm getting paid to be in there! xx

Have eaten here a few times recently and the standard of the food was excellent. Menu and wine list were varied and reasonably priced. A great addition to the area.

What a grand building! Amazed to see it restored to it's original beauty (not sorry to see Platform 1 go). What grand food (at excellent prices too)! It's now my 'modern day' local.

Went for the first time last week. Great outdoors area, a cosy atmosphere downstairs and lovely dining room upstairs. Food was fab (& good calue), and good variety of wines (+ anywhere serving Leffe wins with me anyway!). Has to be good for the area!

Quite nice, but I had to wait ages for my drinks, food was very good.
Xavier - 25 Sep 2003 11:29
best pub I have been to for years, lovely friendly atmostphere, food was absolutely fantastic. wine list was very varied and vanila vodka can only be discribed as WOW.
kasha - 24 Sep 2003 22:03
I agree with Maz it's better value than the Rocket - or racket as I call it as the prices are so scary. The upstairs dining room - thumbs up, can't wait to get a few mates round the table for a proper dinner on a cold Autumn day.
Jon Justin - [email protected] - 9 Sep 2003 20:42
a less pretencious version of the rocket .friendly staff .top food
spent most of the summer in the beer garden .
maz - 2 Sep 2003 13:29
i love this place it's so nice to have a local that's not a scary dive. the beers - leffe and hoegaarden amongst others are great and the garden is really atmospheric. I havn't eaten upstairs yet but I had a wander and agree it's a lovely room with an amazing ceiling. Definately worth a try.
Josie Fitzwilliam - 13 Aug 2003 00:39
How can you say its a less interesting version of the Rocket?! Have you seen the stunning dining room upstairs? The food is fab, the menu seems to change regularly and the wine list is really interesting.
JW - 7 Aug 2003 18:43
Went there for the first time on wednesday. I hope the owners get the word around Acton as it was pretty quite when I went, but it deserves to do well. Leffe on tap was nice to see!
anonymous - 19 Jul 2003 00:09
One of the two good pubs in Acton. Let's hope the rest catch up soon.
Ben - 9 Jul 2003 17:20
A new pub competing for the title of closest to Acton Central railway station. Unfortuantely seems to be a slightly less interesting version of the Rocket further down the road. Beer and wine are both fine. Clientele is fairly pleasant and it does have a lot of outdoor seating. One for the summer maybe.
