user reviews of the Oak On The Green, Bearsted

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This is a very atmospheric pub with plenty of character, adjacent to and without very short walking distance from the large village green. The food is excellent, the beer well-kept and well-served by friendly and welcoming staff, and the clientele a lively, mixed bunch of families, ale enthusiasts and locals. The emphasis is on eating, and I got the impression most people were visiting with families and parties to dine.

The interior is ostensibly dark, but it isn’t at all gloomy and claustrophobic: the furniture and wooden fixtures are heavy, comfortable pieces like an old-fashioned country inn, and the vintage low ceilings are festooned with hops. The bar can be crowded, as it shares space with a dining area, but the business isn’t overwhelming.

I enjoyed Summer Lightning and Oak ale in here, which were both damned fine.

Parking is tight in the rear car park, as it’s always very busy, certainly during the day.
We parked in a side-road and walked.

A bit of a trek to get to, but well worth it.

Lovely interior and a good range of guest ales. I plumped for teh Oak ale which was very nice. Also had Biddenden's cider on tap. A welcoming place despite it being very busy on Easter Sunday

Had to park about 10 minutes walk away from this venue. It is very dark and noisy inside, the single candle on the table was the only light I had to struggle to read the menu by. Staff were friendly but the service was slow. A shame because the food was nice.

One of our favourite pubs to eat in. Terrific food and often very busy. Always two or three real ales on the hand pumps (Goachers?)

"Not quite on the green either". Doh, the Green describes the area not just a rectangle of grass. It's fifteen yards from the grass.

Very good food, cant fault the very friendly staff and possibly the most underrated and the best real ale in the maidstone / tunbridge area.

Didn't get the impression that this place really welcomes people who just want a pint rather than eat. However, they do have three real ales, two of which come from the small 1648 Brewery in Sussex (and the Gold Angel was first class). The menus on the blackboards don't show prices, which I find very off-putting. Not quite on the green either...

Seems to me to be a Bite in the evening rather than a beer!

Great pub, lots of choice on the menu and massive portions - excellent value. Try it!

Went to the Oak on the Green on 10th April 2009 with four friends. We sat down but were told that we had to move, even though the table was not shown as reserved without any explanation. We were squeezed into a corner surrounded by mums and young children in what felt like a nursery. Staff were rude and unhelpful. We had intended to stay for some food but went elsewhere due to the service we had received. Not a pleasant experience.

Was probably a pub once, but now is best described as a restaurant with an extremely good bar.

After reading the reviews on this pub, I thought I must add one. We have been to the Oak on the green many times and absolutely love it. The food is superb (chicken Piri Piri my favourite) It is always busy and has a great atmosphere. I would recommend it to anyone - we are always proud to take our friends there.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE OAK ON THE GREEN. I HAVE JUST ARRIVED HOME FROM AN EXCELLENT THREE NIGHT STAY AT THE TUDOR PARK HOTEL, NEAR BEARSTED. ON OUR SECOND DAY, WE WERE LOOKING FOR A LOCAL PUB TO HAVE LUNCH, AND WERE RECOMMENDED TO TRY THE OAK ON THE GREEN. I HAD THE STARTER OF CRISPY BRIE, WHICH WAS HUGH, BUT DELICIOUS AND MY HUSBAND HAD THE PATE, WHICH HE THOROUGHLY ENJOYED (I CAN'T COMMENT ON THIS, AS I AM NOT A PATE FAN). FOR THE MAIN COURSE, I HAD CHICKEN BURRITO, WHICH AGAIN WAS DELICIOUS AND MY HUSBAND HAD THE FILLET STEAK WITH PEPPERCORN SAUCE. THE STEAK WAS COOKED PERFECTLY, WITH A LOVELY CREAMY PEPPERCORN SAUCE AND HUGH - HE COULDN'T MANAGE IT ALL, WHICH IS VERY UNUSUAL FOR HIM. WE WERE INTENDING GOING BACK TO THE TUDOR PARK FOR A SWIM IN THE AFTERNOON, BUT WERE FAR TOO FULL! WE ENDED UP G0ING BACK TO THE OAK ON THE GREEN THE FOLLOWING EVENING AND AGAIN THE FOOD AND SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT. I WOULD RECOMMEND BOOKING, AS BOTH TIMES WE WERE THERE, THE PUB WAS VERY BUSY.

I HAVE NEVER WRITTEN A REVIEW BEFORE TO PLEASE FORGIVE ME IF THIS APPEARS A LITTLE ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES,I AM SURE YOU WILL GET THE POINT!
I was in this pub last night with my girl friend,It was packed solid inside and out and it had a real summertime feel about it,Toni (my girlfriend)had hurt her leg eventing recently and could not stand for long periods of time so as there were no seats left we decided to have one drink and go(she could not drive so I could not have more than one beer any way)
We both had finished when a member of the staff said 'going so soon' I explained about the sitting down issue. 30 seconds later two girls had jumped up from there table and insisted we take it(we later found out the were local riding instructors so sympathised with Toni.) To cut a long story and fantastic night short, we stayed there for almost 3 hours had the very best chicken fajitas we have ever had! (We even had a mexican cookery lesson from the chef later!!)

Thank you so much Mark,Regina, Pipo, and gang for a fantastic start to the week end and beware, we are bringing a whole bunch of people with us....Jonti K.
ps (We are there again tonight).

sadly a grt place that will always be busy,so there may be an aire of complacency on their part.one of the chefs that worked there is now at the hook and hatchet at hucking and the food there is very good now.i would drive past now and go to the hook or the black horse at thurnham.shame!!

I have just had the worst meal of my life. I have been going to the Oak on the Green since it opened and it used to be great, mouth watering steaks, really good home cooked food. However over the last few years it has got worse and worse and the last few times I have been we have not paid for all or part of our meal for various reasons. When we got there tonight it took them 5 minutes to acknowledge us waiting at the bar for our table - despite the manager looking up at us from his paperwork several times. The service was slower than if the food had been delivered from Scotland. My Fathers steak was well done not medium well and almost cremated it was so crispy, when we complained the waitress said it was have that or wait 30 mins for another. All in all it took 90 minutes to get our main courses. Then no one came to check how our meals were and it appeared we had been forgotten about. We sat and waited and waited and in the end we actually called the pub to get our bill on our mobile phone - they bought the bill over 15 minutes later with no apology and with the steak we complained about and someone elses drink bill added on. All I have to say is if you want lousy service, waitresses with attitude problems, food that isnt what you ordered and is just frozen food reheated then go to the Oak, if you want something better then go to McDonalds.

nice place.weve been the using the place a number of yrs.goachers is good.we have had probs recently with a young barman who is the most miserable sod weve come across.we were recently turned away at lunch when the place didnt have a soul in it due to a dress code????????? who was my son going to offend outside when no-one was there?? the rest of the staff are a joy.the food is grt,but follows the trend of serving main size courses for starters.theres no room for a main course after wards.folk will say this represents value, but we would rather pay four quid for a taster and move on to some of the very good main courses.they will serve the pealla as a veg option with just seafood.the serrano prawns are a real winner and if you take someone with a big appitite, try the steamer, very comforting.theyve stopped doing the choc fondue now,but puds are good too.sadly there is a need to smoother everything with piles of chips.if you go with dogs you will also be welcomed.over all very good.give it a try.

good menu, bit overpriced i thought, and food was nice if a bit on the light side when it comes to quantity

cant fault the service and would go again

Have always found this place friendly. The food's general always very good with a wide variety to choose from. You can go there just to drink but you'd be in a minority. Tip: Best to book a table for an evening (even midweek) rather than just turn up.

Great food, friendly and courteous staff. Large dining area can cater for large groups. Can highly recommend.

Upmarket bistro style pub with wood and hops and french jazz. More eatery than pub, but quite cool - generates an attractive Sunday afternoon atmosphere. Sells Goachers Special as the house ale - WAC, and Flowers IPA. Also offers the occasional guest.
