Was quite busy Saturday lunchtime. Good selection of food costing about £7.
The cottage pie, lasagne and plaice meals were very nice.
Let down by only one choice of ale - Doom Bar. I suppose we should be grateful there was more than one choice of food!

Great looking pub with a decent atmosphere but sadly all 3 pumps were dispensing Doom Bar and the regulars seated round the bar made it hard to get served.
Another beer or two would have made it a more regular haunt on our week down there.

Visited the Salutation this week on my annual pilgrimage to Cornwall and found it the same as ever. Food was good and reasonably priced. Doom Bar is still the only real ale on offer - no problem for me as I enjoy it - but just for a change a tried a pint of Sharps Cornish cider, and very nice it was too. The best pub in Looe in my opinion - ticks all the boxes for beer, food and atmosphere.

Was in here last weekend and the place was absolutely full, standing room only. Food looked good, and the Doom Bar was in good nick. Best sociable pub in Looe.

Best pub in the area. I like the way you go back in time when you walk through the door!

Clearly Doom Bar is something that not everyone enjoys. Surprised at the use of "omnipresent", it is brewed in Cornwall after all - Cornwall likes to keep it Cornwall.

Love the sloping tiled floor and the low beams, plus the old photos of sharks that people have caught over the years.

A very traditional cornish pub! No doubt steeped in local history! Very pleasant staff, Good pub food (reasonably priced), cosy atmosphere. well worth a visit!

An “olde worlde” pub situated on the main High Street. It’s got an attractive beamed ceiling that is suitably sagging to authenticate it’s old world charm and a riled floor. Lots of picture’s on the wall, many featuring shark fishing which is popular in the locality. There’s a small snug known as “The Cuddy” and may nautical touches such as a port hole in the door and a brass propeller mounted on the wall. There was what appeared to be a log fire place, although in practice I think this was just a stack of logs. I couldn’t work out how it would have functioned as a fire.

Staff seemed friendly enough, and there was a decent “pub grub” menu at reasonable prices, with most of the mains being around the £7 mark. In practise though, the food was a little disappointing. My Chicken Tikka Masala, whilst being very tasty, was far more Tikka Masala than chicken, with just three chunks of meat in a sea of sauce. Similarly, Mrs. Blackthorn’s Chicken Kiev was about half the size of the accompanying jacket potato.

The solitary beer on tap was the omnipresent Doom Bar. Ciders were Sharp’s Cornish Orchard and Blackthorn.

This is a tricky one to mark. On one hand it’s a great old pub with a good atmosphere. On the other it only had one beer on and the food was ultimately a bit disappointing.

Excelent pub with character, good beer and food, friendly staff, well worth a visit.

Desperate for a pint while the rest of the family went off for a cup of tea I thought this might be just the place to slake my thirst.
Through the window I could see four real ale hand pumps on the bar - yep, this is the one.
I'm standing in front of said hand pumps which are all displaying the Doom Bar pump clip. You're having a laugh aren't you - I'm not that desperate.
Think I'll try the Bullers Arms instead. Do you ever get that feeling it is going to be one of those days?

Quite busy ona Sunday afternoon about 4.30, but the locals reckoned it was quiet! Friednly place, only Doombar on tap for ale drinkers, but a good selection fo other drinks. Good phots and memorabilia around the walls. The menu looked good - lamb hotpot special particularly - but food not served until 6pm so we didn;lt ry it out!

the pub where the locals eat and drink...The only problem I have with this pub is that they consistently use the wrong glasses for drinks...lager in Guinness glass? Baileys in a wine glass?

Friendly welcome. Only beer was Doom, but well served and good. On a dampish day the log fire dried us out nicely. Popular with the locals.

only ale was Doom bar but was ok. Food was good

Thought this was a gay bar until we got chatting with the "locals"

Really cosy - wife fell in love with the gay barman/landlord?? She didn't want to leave!

Friendly

Amazing food! Garlic bread was strong (just how it should be)!

I agree, with the other contributers of the thread.... best grub in town!

Been here a few times over the years.... used to have a chunky barman who was "laugh a minute" but didn't see him there this time? Did he elope with a local lad?

went in for a meal. the pub was packed out which is a good sign. my ale was a bit iffy so i changed to guinness. the food was really good, probably the best we've had in looe. nice atmosphere when the pub is free from loud, middle class arseholes who love the sound of their own voice. this particular group were actually driving customers away they were so obnoxious.

Good pub and good food at a good price. When the Doom Bar is on form, there is no-where better!!!! A good all year round pub.... watch you head on the way in (if you want some entertainment, sit in the window next to the door at the height of the tourist season!) OUCH!

Decent pub - seems to do quite a bit of food and caters for visitors and locals. In the off-season when we were there it was a bit lacking in atmosphere compared to the Fishermans. But I liked it and the Doom Bar was in excellent condition - possibly best I have tasted it.

Had to laugh when it ws £1.33 for a half - i can't remember when I last paid an amount not rounded to the nearest 5p - but good on them - it was £2.65 for a pint so the prices are fair.

Would definitely visit again.

fascinating pub with pictures of dead rod caught sharks hanging up everywhere(before we knew better)
Brilliant freindly bar staff with reasonably priced pub food.

The Salutation and the Ship Inn (which I have previously reviewed) are almost opposite each other on Fore Street in Looe, but the atmosphere and the ambience in the Salutation are poles apart from those in the Ship. Admittedly the beer choice isn’t so good … only Doom Bar on the hand pumps … but the couple of pints that I had were pretty good. And the Salutation being much smaller has a much more homely and friendly feel.

Although we didn’t eat here, the food looked excellent and was quite reasonably priced. We arrived just after 7pm when things were already pretty busy, but when we left an hour or so later the pub was heaving … with folk queuing waiting to pounce as soon as a table became vacant. I guess that you can’t get a much better recommendation then that !!!

I agree that this is the best pub in Looe, but lets be realistic there aint a lot to beat..... very expensive and why do the owners let the bar staff do all the work ?
pubpubpubpub - 17 Mar 2008 23:59
Ok but expensive £2.95 for carlsberg?

Doom is very nice though and staff are pleasant

For my money, the best pub in Looe (and I've tried most, if not all, of them). Warm and welcoming. No television (hooray). Well kept ale; the Doom Bar was very nice when I was last there on Fri 23rd Nov 2007. Lunchtime food is inexpensive and tasty. The lamb hotpot being pronounced particularly good by my companions. If you're in Looe, I recommend this place as first port of call before any others.
themillbrooker - 25 Nov 2007 13:24
Quality pub in a town full of them. Probably the finest in East Looe, and the beers are extremely well kept. The Sunday roasts looked and smelt great and the sheer volume of oldies shuffling in and out confirmed it was good value too.
londinieres - 12 May 2007 16:24
Nice little Cornish fishing inn with excellent beers that are well kept. A good pasty shop opposite is the one thing that got me out of the place. Dog friendly.
