Lovely pint of Moon gazer Triskele porter...

So many of these pubs on the Cromer to Hunstanton road have changed beyond recognition as the area has become more in vogue over the years. I'm sure they must get the 'duck egg' blue gloss and nautical ropes from the same supplier... That said, I didn't encounter the rude staff slurpy mentioned, and beers were pretty good.. two from the Grain brewery in Harleston, Best bitter, and a 6% porter called slate. I settled on woodeford wherry.. Also nice to see a Gluten free beer (reindeer) from the Norwich Redwell brewery. Didn't eat on this occasion. PS - massive gin selection (140!), and bar staff seemed knowledgeable regarding which tonics went with each as well..

Very poor service, are there any regulars waiting to be served before I have to serve a holidaymaker attitude.I would suggest bypassing this gastro mess.1/10.

Good pub, good service, good food and a nice selection of beers. Wolf Twenty 16, Humpty Dumpty Special, their own house Ship Ale (not sure who brewed by) and Old Stoat Wobbler from the Beeston Brewery - which were all tried and all in good nick. These are backed up by a range of craft stuff on the taps - Goose Island, Adnams East Coast and another that I can't remember. Prices ok-ish for beer, with food prices a bit high, but not extortionate. Perfect if staying at one of the campsites nearby as we were - yes, in January!!

Only time for a quick pint of Beeston's The Dry Road yesterday in the back garden but immediately felt it was the best pub we visited yesterday. Woodfordes Wherry, Ship Ale and one of Norfolk Brewhouse's Moon Gazer Ales were also on handpull.

Now excellent and deservedly popular. In this part of Norfolk, most of the pubs have gone terribly 'gastro' with their poncey food and London prices. The Ship is an exception. I found the food to be a good range of well made pub classics at reasonable prices. There were several very good ales on offer too. I tried three of them and they were all excellent.
The best thing about it was the service though. The staff couldn't do enough to be helpful and pleasant to their customers. Well done.

Fine pint of Wherry in passing and hope to try the interesting menu on a return trip in July.

First visit since change of Landlord. Much improved. The cafe style tablecloths had gone and the pub was much more its old self. Good beer selection too. One of my favourites, Humpty Dumpty Nord Atlantic was on.

Visited alone in Sept 2012.
Served by a poker faced fat man whose response to my request as to if they sold Heineken with a flat, straight faced,'no'.
Then asked for Fosters which was met with a similarly charming 'Look mate,we seel what you see'.
Well,I couldn't see anything 'mate', because I was standing at the end of the bar at an angle to the pumps.
Live football competed with music,as visiting wealthy Londoners ate very mediocre food, served by aforementioned very grumpy fat barman as his trousers revealed a fat arse crack above them.(If only he could crack a smile).
This pub looks welcoming from the outside, but you'd be wrong.
It deserves some genuine competetion, then it might buck its ideas up a bit and employ some vaguely people-friendly staff.
AVOID.GET SOMETHING FROM TOWN.AWFUL.

My Great grandfather was landlord of this pub at the end of the 19th century , and I'm sure he was kind and courteous to patrons LOL - as strange as it may seem, about 30 years ago, in South Africa, we found ourselves living next door to a chap whose father had been Landlord of this pub some years previously!

sorry john, back at kelling heath and just a great lunch....plus good ale...you must have cought them on a bad day...mind you no excuse.

This run down pub is a thorn in the side of the beautiful North Norfolk coast. It is run by "Terry" who has no ability in people skills required of a publican. My friends and I felt very unwelcome. The beer was sour, wrong temperature and really undrinkable. The food was was no better, and the multiple ring from a microwave explained that.. !

***Avoid this unclean, unwelcoming pub...!***

Stopped by on our week in Norfolk with my partner and 4 children, ranging from 1 to 12 years old. The barman was initially friendly enough, but seemed to change when I asked if we could dine in the garden. He wasn't prepared to let us eat outside, only on the tables directly outside the front door (no good to us as leads directly onto the main road).
After we ordered our food, we sat indoors and I had to ask for a highchair, which was handed over the bar and was very dirty.
The food arrived pretty promptly, but was not amazing. The childs meal was red hot, chips overcooked and the other meal I ordered just didn't materialize, the barmans attitude put me off asking where it might be.
The standard meals where ok, alot of money for too little food.
I ordered Lobster for the first time in my life, and was fairly disappointed to say the least to have to pay 12 for 5 tiny mouthfuls of lobster, 5 new potatoes and a plate full of lettuce and red onions.
However on the plus side, my eldest sons fish was extremely good.

Stopped for a quick lunch and pint. The Landlord is quiet but was amiable enough once engaged in conversation. The food was good and plentiful, although we just had a snack. Four beers were on including Grain Oak, and offerings from Woodfordes and Wolf Breweries. The Grain Oak was well kept and I would certainly call in again

Our group of eleven walkers visit to this pub was a truly awful experience. But first what was right? The beer was a well kept pint of local origin but after that!
The landlord is a very rude person. He refused to answer a simple question about the ciders he kept.
However, on a fine summers day we went into his pleasant garden with nice substantial benches and plenty of dogs faeces!
The sandwiches were appalling - I was treated to a burnt sausage with RAW onions. I have spoken to several landlords since this incident and no one serves RAW onions with a sausage sandwich.
But he lost out in the long run because we did not stay for that extra pint.

We stayed at Kelling Heath and the Ship seemed an ideal choice. Unfortunately I can't recommend the food as usually seeing "home made" on a menu in my experience has always been a good sign of quality food. Both runny cheese cake & apple crumble were a new take on old favourites that I can't see catching on. Not sure what the chef was trying to achieve and far from edible. We complained and not charged for desserts.

Dropped in on a June teatime for a few Wherries whilst cycling around the area and returned once more.
Clearly a pub that makes its money in the Summer Months from passing tourists and visitors to nearby Weybourne beach.
Nevertheless, good ales and an attractive menu.
One foreign barman there was a bit off when my missus 'only ordered chips' and the Wherry was off on my second visit, which was a great shame.
A lovely spot to sit-out on the veranda and watch people come and go.
So,apart from the aforementioned crap customer relations incident,a fine pub which I hope to visit again soon.

A good pub with friendly locals and excellent beer. The Humpty Dumpty Ale (my first time) is now a top ten beer for me.
I feel they need to be strict with idiot parents on holiday with their revolting kids. For example, why allow a dog to walk over the dining tables while the kids are trying to use the seats as trampolines?
These people should be thrown out before they get 2 feet in the door.
It put me off trying their food too.
Often, allowing kids to treat a pub like a playground will lose, not gain, a lot of business.

Quality little pub. Like the last reviewer we stayed at Kelling Heath and walked down to the pub following a scenic route through woodlands. Only took 30 minutes.

Food is locally sourced and fresh. Fish dishes are the speciality. We had excellent pan fried sea bass. Prices reasonable too - average main course is about 10.

Beer was slightly less favourable. Of the 3 hand pumps only one was on during our visit - the Woodforde's Wherry, which is personally not a favourite (though I drank it anyway!) I think we were just unlucky though - it looks like generally three real ales are always on.

A pub well worth seeking out if you're in the area.

i have just come back from a week in kelling heath, and have to say what a wonderful pub,all three ales were from norfolk, the food was locally sourced and cooked to a very high standard,i was given a sample of each of the ales before making my choice,in the end i ended up having a pint of each of them.oh dear! mrs man at the bar was not happy, but after an hour of good conversation with the regulars and the very friendly bar staff she decided (what a lovely pub, lets go back there again)and we did.i find it hard to rate pubs, and have never given a 10,but this came very close 9/10 well done, and will be back next year.
Man_at_the_bar - 31 May 2008 17:32
Simply a cracking pub in a lovely location and away from all the hustle and bustle of town and city life which sadly makes it a culprit of it's own beuaty and quaintness. I liked the reception from the landlord and the regulars after spending a long weekend of not much, a holiday cottage nearby, the dog and regular trips to the pub. It probably suffers from a lack of trade at various ends of the calendar but with a magic wand in my hand - I change nothing, it's that good and the real ale is top quality.
Mcloj - 1 Apr 2008 14:22
quiet on my lunchtime visit.
great to see 3 beers from humpty dumpty brewery.
alundra - 14 Feb 2008 16:32
new landlord has worked hard and the pub has been redecorated. Food has moved upmarket.

Beer is still good and the beer garden has been revamped with good solid wooden benches with new umbrellas.

The exterior is currently being attended too (long overdue).

cheers

What a shame, this pub is now under new management as of mid June '07, I await with baited breath to see if the new landlord lives up to the previous excellence of Wendy and Eddie - they'll be a hard act to follow.
squiffy85 - 2 Aug 2007 01:56
THIS IS SUCH A CRACKING PUB IT'S JUST UNREAL. Eddie the Landlord is always polite and ready for a chat, his wife Wendy is usually in the kitchen preparing the most wonderful food to die for - quite a lot of which is home cooked! A great selection of meat, fish and veggie dishes available throughout the year as well as some excellent desserts, especially the "Citrus Pancakes". BEER expertly kept and a couple or three guest ales available and regularly changed throughout the week. Can get busy weekend lunch times, especially during height of the season, therefore booking advisable. YOU REALLY CAN'T GET BETTER THEN THIS PUB - if only I lived nearer I'd camp in their car park!
squiffy85 - 29 Apr 2006 03:50
this pub in the same hands 6 years in camra beer guide every year .serves tasty homecooked food with nice veggie dishes alongside meaty options and small kids menu.
very clean loos.
pretty cottagey garden closed for a while last year due to unsafe fence, but this has now been replaced.

Absolutely cracking location, right on the main road through to the coast. Needs a bit of money spending on it to smarten it up a bit, but what a fantastic atmosphere. We're not real ale buffs so we were happy with the lager and also with the food which was good. Bad, however, was the mardy, chippy attitude we got from the miserable southerner shortarsed bloke behind the bar (a deadringer for Mike from The Young Ones) No idea whether he was the landlord or the hired help but whoever he was, he needs to alter his manner and his face pretty damn quick if he wants the place to stay in business. We were refused service in the luscious looking beer garden, which was locked at the height of summer in the holiday season.
