user reviews of the Slug and Lettuce, Bournemouth

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This bar is now called Label, the Slug and Lettuce has moved, as someone else has already mentioned.

I have been here twice recently in groups of 5-10 for food, once at a lunchtime and then last night. The menu looks good, but on both occasions people have been served the wrong food - either because what they were sending out purposely bore little relation to what was on the menu or they were unable to do things like hold cheese off something after agreeing to do so - for someone with a dairy allergy.

For example, last night I ordered a chicken burger which was supposed to come plain, as per the menu, with fries and coleslaw on the side. It turned up with bacon on it - which I do not eat - and nothing else. I explained this, including not wanting the unexpected bacon and a good ten minutes later the plate came back - the burger still with bacon on and with some overdone fries and still no coleslaw.

I will therefore do my best not to eat here again as I have serious misgivings about their food preparation standards.

On the drinks front - the prices seemed to go up between early evening and Friday night proper and I no saw no explanation of this anywhere. Some of the bar staff were reasonably helpful even if they didn't have much of a clue about what was going on, although at some point several of them seemed more interested in drinking shots behind the bar than serving punters. I have also rarely seen a bar that could make draught cider fob so well, so perhaps their cellar hygiene could do with looking at too.

Overall, this place could be so much better with some attention to detail. As it is, at the moment I wouldn't bother. Try O'Neills opposite instead.

I do not beleive it they have finally got it sussed, a bar in bournemouth that is not stuck up its bottom, and the staf know what they are doing, and do it on time. the food is good and the atmosphere is relaxed, and fun, it is a shame that it is not rammed every night of the week and not just at the weekend.

london prices for drinks...ie a pint and a j2o 5.30. a eastern european bar person that found this order confusing...no glass for the j2o...then no ice....a trained hamster could have done better...never again.

I must agree with BFT, this place was aweful. I am not sure why there was so many bugs flying around my beer. Apart from that this place is nothing special, another souless chain pub.

There's more flies in that place than what hangs aroung an indian cows arse!! Do they import them or something. About time the place had a damn good clean.
BFT - 7 Jan 2007 18:28
OK you wan-na be confused - Try this chain. The Slug is now in the Square where Casa was. This one is now called "LABEL" - wtf does that mean. Empty pub no atmos, crap staff don't waste your time.

I have been in there in the early evening and walked out often. Why...? because there is nobody there to serve anybody. This is meant to be a business!

Nice relaxing bar, not somewhere i'd head too on a night out but very nice place to have lunch and maybe a few afternoon beer's.

A bit prententious. The kind of place you start from, not end up at. Tends to attract suited gents and well dressed ladies. Never has any need of door staff because nothing much happens there.

This is a good bar (definitely not a pub) but a good bar, none-the-less. A definite favourite with the local white collar types, although others (like us normal people!) are welcome. The food is very pricey, but absolutely delicious; you get what you pay for in life! Good beer, as well.
It's a little bit "too cool for school" but nowhere near as bad as Toko,Bliss,Karma, et al.
The barmaids (and a lot of the female customers) are absolutely gorgeous, as well!

Very bad pub: Crap beer, awful furniture, dreary nordic decor. Gives the word "pub" a bad name!

Went to the slug last week with my wife. Had a caesar salad which was absolutly beautiful. Comfy leather sofa's, good newspapers and chilled music. Has recently had a refurb and is over all a very good pub.

As a Plymouth Argyle fan you can rest assured theyd have avoided this possibly bournemouths most bland chain pub

Incidentally i was a ttacked in here in 1999 by a yardie drug dealer

guess who got thrown out???..............yep me and ive only been back twice since.give it a miss and hope it goes under

Very pretentious, a place for little girls with even littler skirts to hang out and drink alcopops!

Strange place this. Went there on Boxing Day evening amd me and two mates were initially prevented from entering by the doorstaff who wanted to know our postcodes. Once they were satisfied that we were indeed locals they were happy to let us in. Apparently, the doorstaff were concerned that the place would be overrun by rapacious hordes of Plymouth Argyle fans. Find this a tad peculiar because whilst Plymouth are well supported, their fans have never had a 'reputation' even in the bad old days. Furtthermore I would imagine that this particular fixture represents one of the few occasions that PAFC fans are able to get back home from an away trip before closing time and given that it was Boxing Day I can't imagine that too many of them were that keen to linger in B'mth after the game. To change the subject, I could've got away without paying for a round as the barmaid forgot to charge me. However, as I'm not a complete bastard, I pointed out her mistake and was rewarded by a lovely blush (the blonde girl). About 7.30pm the manager decided that as it was pretty quiet, he would close up for the evening! Before I forget, the beer is ordinary but can't comment on the food as I didn't try it. Think they have DJ's on occasion. Fruit machine, quiz machine and bar football.

I went there yesterday for lunch with my husband and the food was dreadful!! My husband's sausages (spicy sausages and bubble & squeak) were solid where they had been over cooked. He's now at home in bed with a terrible stomache upset (he's very rarely ill!).
The manager let him have a free desert, but he didn't get the choice, it was the chocolate cake or nothing!
The place was deserted as well - I now know why!

Food is good. Quite expensive
