user reviews of the Good Intent, Brislington

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Closed and boarded up 23/5/2019
TalbotHill - 23 May 2019 15:20
First time here in ages, too many cans being sold over the bar, guinness included, rather than the genuine draught item. Lounge looks bare nowadays and it's hard to attract bar staff serving in the bar next door. No. 1 bus stop nearby takes you to Sandy Park Road, the location of the only decent alternative.
In the the HI has SKY, why no WiFi?
TalbotHill - 5 Jan 2013 20:32
Knobs

Think you visited the wrong place mate...May be similar patrons but respectful and well behaved. The loyal patrons and authorities are very appreciative that they have a clean and professionally well run pub by decent staff.
Perhaps you one of the handfull that, regardless of progres you would be happy to see the pub closed.
RobHulls - 2 Jul 2010 21:21
Called in here to see a mate and did not bother staying. It looks like all the yobs that were using the place before the troubles and eventual closure are back in (minus a couple of notable exceptions - Holiday Camp types).
I'll certainly be giving this place a miss while the football is on and more especially if England are playing!
knobs_de_fromage - 25 Jun 2010 15:34
A quick upddate..pub due to reopen in mid May.

For all updates...GI BRISLINGTON on facebook.
RobHulls - 14 Apr 2010 06:56
Pub closed a few days earlier than expected.A health and safety issue has been raised prior to works starting on Weds. The early closure is a safety reason, otherwise starts on extensive work could not commence.
Check out facebook under Good Intent Brislington i will update all information.
RobHulls - 20 Mar 2010 09:21
Sounds more like they found two things they have been looking for.

Can't wait for the re-opening. I'll be there.
boffo - 20 Mar 2010 08:01
Boffo obviously does not know me.
I have no intention of coming to the Good Intent until i take over, and that when i am there like in the previous 15 years i have no intention of being "pissed up"
RobHulls - 13 Mar 2010 23:32
popped in the gi for a quicky on way home last night only to see drug dealing going on again, when will these people learn,as for the door staff ,what a complete waste of time.think i will wait for the pub to reopen before i use this place again.
frankenstien - 13 Mar 2010 17:42
Poked my head round the door but full of local chavs without their tops on getting well stuck into the heavy lager. Rob Hulls was pissed up again. Insenseble. Better get down the Pilgrim.
boffo - 13 Mar 2010 09:23
A slight alteration..the pub will now be closed on Weds 24th March for 5/6 weeks.
The facebook site has also changed it is Gi Brislington..i have posted some more comments and old photos.

Check out the 25%off food Loyalty card.
RobHulls - 10 Mar 2010 14:11
Great news,i hope it all goes well.Nice to have you back Rob.
dave_darling - 8 Mar 2010 10:45
Nice to see some progress on the old "GI" at last.
It'll be nice to have a pub in Brislington that does a decent reasonably priced menu as well.
TalbotHill - 8 Mar 2010 09:29
I write with admiration of those who have kept the comments flowing over the past couple of years. Some more accurate than others, but all agreeing that the pub has declined considerably.
Perhaps now is the best time to declare what is happening at The Good Intent.
On the 22nd of March the pub will close for 4/5 weeks whilst essential repair and redevelopment works are carried out. These will include New windows,Signage and External Lighting, new flooring to the bar area and remedial and decoration works.
The kitchen is being stripped out to be replaced with brand new equipment.
Other work is planned but has to be deferred until planning is agreed.
Enterprise Inns have asked me to come back and re-establish the pub back to the community pub that it once was.
I am as passionate now for this pub as i was when i owned the lease from 1995-2008 and i hope that i can count on the support it once had.
The refurbishment is costing me approx 100k which shows my commitment to the project.I will not reopen until the kitchen is fully functional and operational as this was always an important part of The GI.
A press release will appear soon and a direct letter will be sent to all those that i have on my data base.In the meantime i have Opened up a Good Intent Brislington facebook page to help keep people informed and to listen to all views.Perhaps the few who have been using this site can help me pass on the contact details. What i put on this or the facebook site will be fact. Thanks for reading.
RobHulls - 4 Mar 2010 13:02
Think things are coming to a head.I have heard that Rob Hulls is taking the pub back sometime in March and Enterprise company are doing some major works alongside Rob.
Despite the comments made about me and Talbot i am only too happy to have the chance of visiting the GI again as it used to be a couple of years ago.
dave_darling - 26 Feb 2010 15:27
One thing for sure... Wetherspoon's only take over closed pubs, so I guess the G.I. will struggle on under Enterprise's rule for the time being? Seems the White Hart will be closing in March, so the remaining customers there may well use this instead. Fingers crossed eh?
TalbotHill - 26 Feb 2010 00:02
Hey..a new member of the Good Intent Appreciation Society.

Welcome..I must say that it seems that you are the one with the Knowledge..so much information in one hit.
I am sure myself and Talbot kept this information going as nobody from The pub could give us a sensible answer.

Perhaps one day we will know whats happening, but one thing is for certain is that a lot of locals would welcome the old pub back again.
dave_darling - 18 Feb 2010 19:23
Dave darling et al, oh dear how knowledgeable and so far correct and incorrect! you all are, dear oh dear!
Take the big picture - a huge pub ! neglected ! numpties! cider tin boys! empty ! no investment ! no kitchen ! roudy regulars ! police visits ! complaints from locals the list is endless?
The pub was doomed in 2008 !
Enterprise are in debt ,they dont want excess pubs, however they will trade them with unfortunates who stump up their money and pay their bills /beer /staff etc
bet poor old Ted and Rob are not as flush as they were?
The whole situation of last year was a set up, yes a set up! Think all involved played their parts well ! Enterprise /licensing dept/police/trouble-shooters played an ace! Welcome to Lidl land! What a charade ! ps did you also have a part in this Dave as you and talbot kept up the momentum.
pccamraman2 - 16 Feb 2010 13:35
Have heard that the pub will be sold unless a responsible Landlord takes Control.Popped into the once thriving lounge to find a handful of customers.
The place looks like its been robbed.
dave_darling - 11 Feb 2010 17:54
Just hearing that the current landlord has applied for the lease,How low is this pub going.
Cant see him in a Tutu.
Think the story of Rob Hulls taking over was just a rumour.
Any more news on where the MP stands against her fight with this pub.
O'h silly me it's election year.
dave_darling - 5 Feb 2010 10:48
According to the local Press, the White Hart is due to close and is expected to be transformed into a permanent headquarters for the Bristol School of Performing Arts.

Why not follow a theme and turn the Good Intent into a Ballet School as well?

TalbotHill - 2 Feb 2010 09:46
Good news we think...Rob Hull was seen in the pub looking around this week, perhaps the pub will be alright.
Needs to be somebody like him to sort out,the place is a bloody disgrace to the area.
dave_darling - 20 Jan 2010 19:21
Clear the idiots out clean the place up and regulars will return.

I agree with the bar door situation..still better not being able to get in than get out!!
dave_darling - 6 Dec 2009 16:12
Well, driven past a few times this week and as before, the same old faces standing in the doorway of the bar. Better off in the Pilgrim or the Sandringham I guess?
knobs_de_fromage - 6 Dec 2009 15:49
Hello everyone, sorry about misunderstanding dave.
At the moment I am relying on enterprise to get the kitchen sorted. The problem I have is that the kitchen is condemned and I am trying to sort out the upstairs kitchen so i can do small snacks. They have told me the main kitchen wont be done before Christmas which is a big disappointment because I have a great chef lined up to go in as soon as it is ready! As for the idiots, like I said I am still sussing everyone out and have started putting procedures in place to try and deter them from coming in. It will obviously take some time but hopefully by the time the kitchen reopens they will be long gone. I have managed pubs with similar problems in the past and was able to turn them around. It looks like I'm here till February at least, when the lease is going up for sale, hopefully longer.
scott111 - 1 Dec 2009 18:40
Hello Scott...firstly read my message again it said the THE PREVIOUS GUY WHO WAS REPLACED..not the present.
I admire you for taking on the pub in the first place, and hope you do well out of it,but it is a known fact that the idiot's wont stop until the place is closed by the police.
This has been my local for years and since a year ago had a good custom and atmosphere.
Are you intending to brink back the food before xmas.
I really wish you well.
So how long have you got their?
dave_darling - 1 Dec 2009 17:35
Hey Guys. Well, I'm Scott the new manager of The Good Intent. Looks like Im going to be here until the lease gets sold so want to clear a few things up. Firstly I would like to say that I have NEVER been drunk in The Good Intent, weather behind the bar, in front of the bar, at the end of the bar or otherwise and i don't intend on getting drunk there unless I have a night off because it is completely unprofessional. As for the beer. As a lot of you probably know I have inherited a lot of problems from the previous management ie. Cellar problems,a few nasty people etc. I am trying my hardest to fix all of these problems but I cant do it all at once. I have spent hours cleaning the lines in the pub and I can honestly say the beer is great. Most of the customers have told me that it is a lot better than before but I still have other problems in the cellar to sort out before the beer is perfect! As for the nasty people, I am still sussing everyone out but my policy is to give everyone a chance and if they cause trouble they will be barred from the pub. It is the best I can do for the moment at least, but like I said, the pub cant change over night, it will take some time to sort everything out. I would love to hear everyones comments, good and bad because its your opinions that matter. At the end of the day I want to know everything you all think I can do to improve your pub.. Thanks!!!
scott111 - 30 Nov 2009 16:10
I would just like to say that i visited the pub several times over the past week. There is a new landlord who has in my opinion improved the quality of the beer by far, the landlord seems nice enough and has always been completly sober each time i have been in so find it hard to beleive he was pissed at the bar as stated by dave darling. There is still hostility in the pub, but the new landlord is trying his best to rectify this. It will take time but i wish him the best.
jojo83 - 30 Nov 2009 11:57
Called into the Pub...nothing much changed still a hostile atmosphere except with beer...pretty poorly kept though.
See the guy who was replaced sitting at the bar pissed up.What does this tell you of the type of people that are intending to look after the pub.
Perhaps it's best that the company shut this place down before you get the xmas idiots in.

dave_darling - 30 Nov 2009 10:50
I looked into the JDW angle, but it appears they'll only move in on an already closed site. Perhaps the closure of the G.I. could have been a blessing in disguise after all?

There was a load of bar sundries, cleaning materials etc. being delivered the other day, so I guess they're setting up camp for a while?

Now it's up to the guy doing the holding relief to stop this being turned back into a holiday camp for the local numpties?

Hi De Hi.
TalbotHill - 26 Nov 2009 11:29
Called in earlier and had a pint. Open!
TalbotHill - 24 Nov 2009 17:21
Found out the temporary management are their until new year.
I agree,i hope the new management team are strong enough to keep the idiots out of this pub,but even then it will be tough to get the pub back as it was a couple of years ago.

Any more mileage in the rumour that Rob Hulls is coming back?
dave_darling - 24 Nov 2009 10:33
I looked on Enterprise Inns website earlier and the G.I. is on the market, but it's not clear whether it's offered Freehold, like the White Hart.

If the G.I. does end up with a temporary "Holding Relief", as is the case with the White Hart, then whoever is in there won't know who's who and it'll end up full of the people that were kicked out before. Have the people in the Pilgrim got the right idea and set a trend for the area?

Perhaps now is the time for JD Wetherspoon to throw their hat in the ring? This place has everything a JDW wants; a large building with a large kitchen and not a lot of car park to worry about.
TalbotHill - 24 Nov 2009 10:09
Been informed that the pub is having temporary management in place by end of the week.
Word is that he got a goodbye present, something that he had coming to him by all accounts, been hiding behind a doorman for a while now.
Hope the temporary management can handle this volcano.
dave_darling - 23 Nov 2009 17:26
Been talking to TalbotHill and he heard that it was due to close today? Also heard that the bloke that was there yesterday had a "slap" or two? Mmmmm... Closed I guess?
Nigelbeermonster - 23 Nov 2009 15:51
Walked past the pub today, all shut up.
Has it happened?
dave_darling - 23 Nov 2009 15:12
Heard there is a rumour that Enterprise want's Rob Hulls to come back to the pub.Thinks this will be a good move at least he know's the pub and the area.
As for the muppet that thinks is running the Good Intent, best got rid.
dave_darling - 20 Nov 2009 12:01
Drove past Thursday afternoon and it was open with a few people outside the front door. Sit back and wait to see what happens next I guess?
TalbotHill - 20 Nov 2009 10:00
There's a copy of the letter from the local MP going round (saw it in the Sandringham). Manager also seen going to the supermarket to buy stock (cans/bottles etc) as there's nothing else to sell. If he was "out & about" drinking elsewhere, has the pub now closed?
TalbotHill - 19 Nov 2009 13:35
I have been informed that the current landlord has been served notice, not sure if this will lead to a final closure or not.
The pub has been run for the past few months by ignorant drunks who are in the pub for their own pleasure.
The pub needs to be exorsized, put the demons to sleep and refresh the pub we all want.
But the question is who is strong enough to take control, and do the locals still want the pub?
dave_darling - 17 Nov 2009 07:55
Oh how things change as you get older.

I used this pub when I worked on shift at St. Anne's Board Mills, and with the Post Office. That shows how long ago I started using it.

Good Intent in name, hopefully by nature too?

TalbotHill - 16 Nov 2009 23:40
Shame the pub has got to this..brought on by the ignorance of Enterprise who own the pub.Mr Hulls warned us what would happen.
I am surprised he is not on the list of ex landlords who you would bring back,he did well for 15 years.
Does anybody give a damm about saving this pub, a licence review may be a good thing to kick Enterprise in sorting this pub out.
I too live locally and see the idiots that are bringing down the area.

dave_darling - 16 Nov 2009 11:01
Heard today that the licence is up for review. That could well mean that the place could close soon, especially if the local MP is involved? Sorry that the GI has got to this point, but the locals should have supported it more, instead of letting the"Cider Tin Boys" taking over!
Briz_Drinking_Bloke - 15 Nov 2009 20:23
Local MP now on the case and sending letters out to the locals about the poor state of the place and the problems that go with it. I can't understand why a place as big as the G.I. has been allowed to go downhill so far? Just look at the Friendship at Knowle, that's now boarded up and soon to become a Tesco store.

OK, there's a Co-Op across the road, but what's to stop Tesco, Sainsbury's or similar, setting up here too if the place closes. As things are at the moment, this pub is on a very short leash and could well dissappear?

Come back Charlie Palmer, Chris Elston or even Maurice Moore! We want the "GI" back as it was!
TalbotHill - 14 Nov 2009 00:15
Talbothill is right about this place except that it HAS followed the Pilgrim's example and has run out of draught beer etc. Only bottles on the last visit, so will be staying away from here until it gets sorted. Local idiots also seem to be back here, so beware!
Briz_Drinking_Bloke - 9 Nov 2009 10:55
My mate went in here a few days ago. Choice of Carling or Cider, no other draught beers available. Looks like this is going the same way the Pilgrim went except that the G.I. has not resorted to going to the Off Licence (yet) to buy stock.
TalbotHill - 25 Oct 2009 09:25
This Pub needs a complete NEW refurb, If they are not going to bother knock the place down, its shite.
Get shot of all the sad loosers who hang outside the place when the schools kick out.
glasscollector71 - 26 Aug 2009 17:31
New bloke in the chair, but the same old problems are still here. If it's been sorted, WHY are bouncers needed on a weekend? Strikes me the bloke wants to leave the pop alone if he's running the place!
Briz_Drinking_Bloke - 23 Aug 2009 20:59
The pub is now under new ownership and management and has changed. there are no more numpties and there is always beer in the celler. i visited the pub last week and it was thriving, lots of people playing pool, darts great music on the jukebox and a great selection of drinks available. i enquired about food but the last owner left the kitchen in such a bad state that it is closed for the time being. was told that work is going on and the kitchen should be open soon. i am new to this area and will certianly make this my new local.
fatdan - 6 Aug 2009 20:37
Now you see it, now you dont Or is it open or closed?

Try and pick a day to visit here when they have one, or preferably all of the following:

a) Someone with a License to run it.
b) Some beer in the cellar.
c) None of the local idiots in the public bar.

The way this is going, it will close before long!

TalbotHill - 30 Dec 2008 12:22
Still a nice plot of land... Say no more!
TalbotHill - 15 Dec 2008 00:54
Heading the same way as the nearby Pilgrim - Numpties barred from there now us this place instead. It'll be closed before long at the rate things are going! (Nice sized plot of land for flats or houses?)
TalbotHill - 21 Oct 2008 09:32
Large red brick pub that needs a bit of TLC. Looking at the various pub sale sites, it looks like this place is again on the market?
TalbotHill - 2 Jul 2008 11:17

got anything to say about this pub?
