This pub has chanes dramatically over the years, I have been drinking here for a decade and can gladly say it is in it's prime. The pub had a makeover September 2011 (yes, the previous tenants have taken leave due to popular demand!) and now looks fantastic, no more run down furniture, questionable chairs and has had a decent lick of paint. The ales are consistent with the Fullers brand; HSB, pride, etc and the pipes are cleaned very regularly which is great news for all you real beer drinkers out there, I am with you! the menu has the pub classics - you can neve go wrong with any of them, you got to try the ginger beer ham with a host of different specials making an appearance every week.
The staff are amongst the friendliest you can come across, always willing to chat and a bit of a laugh regardless of how busy it may get and there's a great amount of live music organised from jazz to the old classics.

All in all this is the best, genuine old pub left in the waterlooville area, well done to guys running it - you are a shining example to the others out there!

Party of five dined here on Sun 24/6/12.
Superb menu for a smallish pub. Excellently cooked food. The usual sunday roast menu plus a thoughtful list of exotics, i.e. sweet potato curry with chickpeas, (which I had-delicious! ) plus one other veggie choice, both of which could be added to with a meat addition if desired. other choices included ginger beer soaked ham, fish & chips ( no greasy batter or chips here, which were whole potato, skin included & delicious, plus other choices. A choice of desserts & three real ales. A nice informal atmosphere, pleasant service from attentive staff. I call 20 per head for a main, dessert & two pints great value. We will be back !

I last rated this pub in 2006, it was somewhat negative. Despite being my closest local for the last 40 years - I rarely (almost never) used it, at one time I did not enter for 10 years (till they changed the landlord). Gales at one time said they would make improvement but that never came to fruition. You only have to read the old reviews to see some of the problems.
I was resigned to it becomming a housing development - thus losing yet another pub.
Last week I discovered that the Farmer had been taken over and refurbished. Today I visited and was surprised by the changes. It was bright and airy and looked very clean, I think this is the first decorating completed in the last 35 years. The HSB was excellent. We had already eaten so cannot comment on the food, but by all accounts it is excellent so will give it a go next weekend. The landlady was very pleasant and told us what they had managed to do so far and her plans for the future. I really hope she succeeds, she deserves to, it seems she has already brought the pub back to life. I hope she gets full support from Fullers. I will definately start to use it on a regular basis.

The pub IS under new management and the Fields family welcome you to the 'new' Farmer Inn. We have refurbished two thirds of the pub thanks to the 30+ volunteers who responded to The Farmer Inn Facebook 'Your Local Pub Needs You' Event (which appeared in The News, The Sun and the Daily Express!) and we plan to refurbish the remaining third of the pub very soon!
Food is served from 12-9 Mon to Sat and 12-6 on Sundays. We are offering 'Two Mains for 12' between 12 noon and 6pm during October and November and our Christmas Party and Christmas Day menus are now available. We look forward to seeing you soon at 'the very new Farmer Inn'!!!

Having heard this pub is under new management we decided to try it out by having a few drinks and then ended up staying for dinner.
I can say we had an excellent time as the food was of a very very good standard, all freshly prepared and a very reasonable price, well done to the new chef. The new managament have cleaned the place up a lot and have been able to keep that very warm feeling you get from a good country pub. They have also introduced an area with soft settees and coffee tables where you can relax and just have a coffee if you fancy.
Not only were the staff very friendly so were the people drinking there, none of that who's in my pub stuff.
This pub is about a mile away from where I live and i can see I will become a regular visitor.

Visited this pub at the weekend (18/09/2011)
It is now VERY different in a really good way. There is excellent food available all freshly prepared in-house by a superb chef. The atmosphere is very welcoming and relaxing. The staff are nothing but friendly, helpful and will bend over backwards to make you feel at home.
I can't wait to spend more time here and sample more of the super duper menu.

I went to the Farmer Inn last week and i was shocked by the transformation! The Place is now bright, comfortable and inviting The new family that has taken over have really done it justice and the food is spectacular and very reasonably priced. Well done to them for restoring our local village pub!

Visited on 2 May. Place was empty. The London Pride was excellent. This pub is clearly at risk if the locals don't support it. Use it or lose it!

This is easily the worst pub I have been too. It is filthy/dirty and drab. It needs a good environmental health check and a clean, or closing down. The food is poor and greasy, the couple that rent the licence are very obnoxious and offensive and are thoroughly disliked by many clientel in the local area. This is definately one you want to miss.

I quite like this Pub, been popping in now & again lately, the Landlord & Landlady are freindly and they've introduced me, gradually, to some of the locals & made me feel welcome. I've not tried it yet but heard it said that the food is really nice too.

popped in to this pub for the first time in a year or so, what has happened! it's filthy, dark, miserable and had some bloke behind the bar trying to juggle bottles and glasses ( he was no tom cruise) Think i'll give it a miss

OK pub, in spite of all the negative comments below.
London Pride a bit pricey at 3.05.
Pool table. Always a bad sign, I feel. Attracts chavs.

Oh dear. I have just revisited this pub and it is not very good at all. The previous tenant let it run down very badly and it needs a lot of TLC. The food used to be great but now it is not very good. The beer is still o.k. but is very expensive. A pint of ESB is 3.20 and in the Ship and Bell it is 2.95. Come on lets return to a great friendly local.
realaleman42 - 1 Oct 2008 15:42

This is a good down to earth pub that is becoming increasingly rarer to find. Very good service and excellent beer.
PeteGroves - 1 Jan 2008 21:57
I have just returned from a lunch time drink at this pub and I have to agree with some comments. Yes, the pub is a little tired and needs some updating. Fullers where are you ???). The beer is in fine condition and well kept but let's have a better choice. I believe ESB is coming in which will be great. This is a very friendly family village pub and they have a new chef. We have just had one of the best lunches that we have ever had in a pub. Two courses from the specials menu for $5.95, absolutely fabulous. The evening menu is just as good. Come on everybody, keep country pubs going. We can't afford to lose them.

Absolutely terrible, an ex-policemen runs it like a kibbutz with every tinker, thief and roustabout lurking in the public bar, it smells like an indian smoke house, the glasses are filthy before the so-called beer goes in them. The food is diabolical, me and my fiance didnt bother with the grub, in fact we left, after an oap lady was physically sick whilst she was having dinner with her husband. This place needs Health warnings!!! you have been warned. DONT GO THERE!!!!!!!!!!!
I_wanna_b_a_rockstar - 4 Jul 2007 20:04
It is now Summer 2007. Nutters have gone (barred). Atmosphere much, much better. Food great (especially the roasties). Beer good, but would benefit from some guest ales - Fullers/Gales gets a bit boring. Large garden with play area for the kids - gate can be secured. High quality music quiz on Sunday evenings, but you need to be good - I'm not!!!
litebuyer - 25 Jun 2007 16:39
Just had planning permission for houses turned down - better luck next time !!!

Dying a slow & painful death ....well it is next to Catherington Cemetry ?

Do Fullers even know they own it ?

This should be a good pub - but isn't
Beer is OK, so is the landlord, but that is all I can say about it. I doubt if a penny has been spent on this place in the last 20 years. The public bar is smokey and smelly - horrible. The lounge is better, and normally empty. You never feel welcome in there. At one time it seemed to be reserved for the weekend Thai restaurant, but that has gone now. At lunchtimes there always seem to be dogs running around behind the bar and in and out of the kitchen. I sometimes wonder if the biggest risk is health and safety with the bar staff tripping over the dogs, or hygiene with the dogs in the kitchen when food is being prepared. As a result of this I haven't eaten there so I cannot comment on the food.
The pub is in a nice village, has a good sized car park, a nice garden, and in a good catchment area with very little competition. It was a Gales pub, now taken over by Fullers. They should rip this place apart and turn it into something really nice. Until then I will go elsewhere.

Who cares? Bleak and boring pub with unfriendly bar staff and dodgy clientel. Might be the right place to go if you want some cheap schmutter - no questions asked!!
