Just paid another Fling visit. Glad to report everything is still excellent. Especially the Ringwood Best Bitter, lovely creamy head and lots of lacing just as it should be!!

Just come back from another visit to the area. Pub's Beer & Food still excellant. Had a great night on Friday 16th for Paddy's day with all you could eat Buffet, Irish Band and lots of punters dressed up. Had a go on the Sunday Night Quiz but did not do any good, still had many pints of Ringwood Best Bitter over the weekend and at 3 a Pint was reasonable and a lot cheaper than my home town in Berkshire for a similar brew. Will definately be back in a few weeks. Great LAndlord and Staff, Thanks

Been back to see if it's changed.Still the same - unspoilt and glad to see the 'one-armed bandit'is now gone!
If there is one thing the pub should change though is the gents toilet. It is cold and it leaks around the urinals and the landlord should really upgrade.
Otherwise, the food is excellent and the real ales are varied and always to a high standard.Staff are friendly as are the locals.
Great forest pub to visit!

Good Ringwood ales accompanied by some very good food. There's also a good atmosphere about this place, unlike so many of the annoyingly common New Forest tourist holes.

Quite frankly my favourite pub. Great food and quality drinks. Excellent guinness. Lovely staff and a fantastic pub.

Back again to this pub, this time for the Sunday Quiz (8pm). Had a great night - serveral pints of the Excellent Ringwood Best Bitter and while we were waiting for the Quiz my party had had a great Sunday Roast. (Beef, Lamb, Pork) But a FULL menu was also available as well. RECOMMEDED

Was in the area again on Tuesday so popped in here for an evening meal "Steak & Ale Pie" Chips & Peas lovely, and all washed down with some excellent Ringwood Bitter. Lovely Pub all round, I wish I lived nearer. Went to one of the Sister Pubs at Dinner time today "The White Hart" (Lymington) but found it to be not as good. Will try the other sister pub "The Smugglers" next time but I think I will be back here many more times this year.

Ditto to the previous posts. Good range of ale/cyder well kept, good food (the ploughmans has been mentioned, quite rightly!) and staff happy to serve!! Family friendly. Good old fashioned country hospitality. The rating is deserved.

Forgot to add on my last Report that the Gents Toilets are one of the Cleanest and most sweet smelling ones I have encountered in a Public House for many years. Excellent keep up the good work

Had lunch here today with friends who are soon moving to village. What can I say excellent all round. A Good pint of Ringwood Bitter. Excellent Food, Freshly Cooked and piping hot at a reasonable price. Has a small Restaurant on the side. Latge Car Park and ample seating outside. Kids & Dog Friendly as well. Advertising a Sunday Night Quiz. The staff also are so friendly with a cheerful smile on entering and an equally enthuseastic farewell Rhank You. A nice change from what I am used to in Berkshire. I will definately be back at the soonest oppotunity. 10/10 for Food, Ale and Atmoshphere. Have uploded Photgraph which I hope will soon be agreed by BITE.

We love going to the Hare and Hounds. Great roast dinners, friendly staff, good beer, comfy sofas, warm open fires in the winter. What more could you ask for?
foxmulder - 14 May 2010 15:29
Regularly visited when in the area, good food and good choice of beer.
shalfiow - 5 May 2010 07:11
As good as ever when visited last week.

Always start off a holiday in the New Forest by having a beer and lunch in here. The ploughmans are enormous and the beers are beautifully kept and promptly served. Lovely location too. Back soon.

Great real food, fast friendly service, nice ales, lovely hanging baskets and small sheltered smoking area, no annoying music (only suitable background), mixed clientele (some children and dogs, all ages). Would recommend for a lovely evening - worth a drive.

Visited yesterday for the first time in donkeys years. Has changed very little (if at all!) and as I fancied a pint or two of fine ale in the beer garden was delighted to see Sharps Doom Bar, Timothy Taylor Landlord and Ringwood Best on tap. Ringwood was average but the other were in excellent condition and service was fairly swift as well despite it being busy with lots of food orders being placed.

Today three of us had lunch at The Hare & Hounds in Sway. It was attractive, very clean the service was excellent and to put the cherry on the cake the meal for all three of us was delicious. Thank you for making my Mom's 86th birthday a day to remember.
nanojet - 12 Jun 2009 17:22
visited for a quick meal, just two of us, atmosphere like a chain pub really-staff in badged uniforms looking uninterested. I had a lasagne-sure it was a microwave job- certainly didnt taste home made. Ok for a quick drink but not really for us, just Ok.

Spend a lot of time in the New Forest and the Hare and Hounds never fails to deliver. It's everything a pub in the forest should be, many others could learn a thing or two. Lovely and friendly atmosphere with locals and tourists drinking great beer and enjoying fabulous food. A great destination for lunch or an evening meal. A wonderful pub!

Had a lovely meal here a couple of weeks ago, on a nice sunny day. Sat in the garden, and ate the biggest Ploughman's I have seen. I did wonder why nobody else was having starters. Had a nice pint of Timothy Taylors Landlord, and a guest ale called Fuggle De Di, I think, from a brewery on the Isle of White. Definately will pay another visit.
hampshirehog - 8 Aug 2008 20:45
Only been once. Normally an ale drinker, but don't like Ringwood (why don't more places have Badger?!) sat in the garden on a fairly miserable day in July. Can imagine it would get very busy as it's such a nice place (though the staff were more concerned with the locals than us...which is fair enough I suppose).

There is a climbing frame for the kiddies, but while I was there the kids playing outside were fairly well behaved.

About a million times nicer than the forest heath. In future I will take the extra ten minutes to walk up there for a pint while waiting for a train!

Great Food & well looked after beer. Always a friendly atmosphere. A meeting place after work for farmers, thatchers fencers & city types trading jovial banter. An ecleptic mix of forest people enjoying life.
Nice open fires in winter & a lovely garden for the summer

This pub was written abt time and time again in the guest book of where we were staying. I have to say it lived up to it's reputation, the food was fantastic. Being a vegetarian is a bit of a pain and veggie options are usually bland and unimaginative 'goats cheese' dishes - not here. I had the most amazing quorn and mushroom pie which i have never seen on a menu, which was homemade and so tasty. There were quite a few veggie options which was great! 10/10 and would def pay another visit

been again mid week.had a sandwich which gave grt value for money.a doorstep full of local sausage.the chips which come with it are really good, crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle.a really well dressed side salad came with it.the prawn sandwich was just as generous.the first pub ive seen that cooks with quorn products to accom the tree huggers amongst us.creeps up in rating

recently visited this pub again on a sunday lunch while on hols.we had been here before again on a sunday and was good then and didnt dissapoint this time.as with the previous reviewer,it was very busy again and when we phoned to ask if we could bring the dog the advice was to get there early.we were sat outside with other customers before 12.theres a good wine list and all helped along with beer from ringwood.a great beer very well kept.the food again was good.its basic fair for sunday lunch with a few specails, prawn cocktail and house pate will give you an idea.the sunday roast was a winner again.add friendly staff and youve got a winner.this will never give a local feel, the car park has visiting motor caravans and tourists, but maintains a very friendly feel.
petenalfiedog - 26 Feb 2008 22:51
I visited this pub with my wife just before christmas.
Even though this was on a Sunday and the staff were expecting to be very busy we were given a love'ly table in the bar window and our food 'which was excellent' was on the table within ten minutes. Top marks to the landlady and the very friendly staff. The food was very good and reasonably priced. Also I loved the ambiance of the place and the friendly chap with the old border collie. A warm and welcoming pub to return to. Top marks for their Ringwood Best.

Really nice country pub with imaginative menu of well cooked food. Nice garden, would definitely drop by again if I was in the area.

Nice pub. Useful garden for children in the sumer.

It's friendly the food is good, served pretty quickly, even when busy, is reasonably priced and has a good selection of drinks.

Car park next to pub, which can get full quite early at the weekend, even in winter but it's unlikely anyoe will have a bad experience here.

The fish is usually very good.

This has to be one of the New Forest's best kept secrets! We almost passed the pub but was well glad we chose to stop. This is a truly 'untouched' pub with a friendly landlord and cheery staff. The pumps are well kept and varied ale selection. The food was one of the nicest we've had on our stay in the area.
Downsides if any are the wait for a table weekends as it seems everybody in Sway frequents the place-especially on the Sunsay quiznight when we went. The quiz compere played original and quirky music with a witty and well run quiz. The winning team gets all the money and maybe this is why it was so busy. When we left the landlord made a point of wishing us a safe onward journey which we all thought was a nice touch.Top atmosphere and a night we all enjoyed. Will definately be back!

Great food and really friendly, had abit of a wobble about 18 months ago but seems to have recovered its crown as one of the best places to eat and drink in the forest.
bigforestdave - 29 Mar 2006 21:24
Winderful place. Despite being a local pub not scared to experiment with 'foreign' beers. Nice atmosphere, food, and garden in the summer.
