user reviews of the Royal Standard, Ely

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Decent looking pub, close to Ely's more renowned pubs, so it won't be a detour to pop in here to see if they have a tick or two for you. 6 cask handpumps and a number of kegs available. They also offer accommodation.

Poorest of the pubs in Ely that we visited. Went in after visiting the Liberty Belle. The pub was completely empty. Limited selection of ale and then ten minutes in, told they would be closing in a further ten minutes. Maybe that was why it was empty in the first place (it was just after 9 p.m. when we entered).

In for a quiet pint and a meal at lunchtime in this gloomy underlit bar, which was empty except for a couple of locals at the bar. GK IPA was OK and the food was passable pub grub. Very pleasant barmaid. Doubt whether it welcomes the opening of the excellent Liberty Belle across the road.

Had a pint of Olde Trip in here. Nice barmaid: very quiet though.

Recently taken over (mid-September 2011) by a very enthusiastic couple. Talked with them over a pint of IPA. Massively improved from previous tennants! Matt is a great guy who's passionate about caring for his pub and beer (they actually clean the lines now, unlike the last slob). Jo is a lovely lady who takes care of the cooking. Again, much improved and could be one of the best places for pub food in Ely very shortly.
I was there Friday 23rd Sept 2011 and they had a live act in the pub. The atmosphere was electric with people dancing all over the place, it was a great night out.
Bright start and a bright future I think.

Another visit to Ely, but this time instead of traipsing round looking for a pub we came straight in here.
It was very much as we found it six months ago. Still two courses for 5.95 and the food again was hot, tasty and filling. The Greene King beer is still here but this time the 'guest' was Gangly Ghoul, a superb dark rich ale fruity and hoppy. It shows G.K. can produce tasty beer.
Once again a very enjoyable lunch.
Oh, and Alan is still wearing his Bermuda's!!!

Time was running out and this was the fifth pub I had tried to get a midweek lunch. The previous four were rubbish.
Upon entering I noticed it was a Greene King pub - another disappointment coming up I thought. You know what the beer is going to be. Abbot with IPA or Old Speckled Hen rubbish and not a guest beer in sight.
Making my way to the bar there were quite a few people already eating but with enough vacant tables to eat at.
Abbot and OSH were on but also a guest, albeit from the G.K. range, Alepril Fool. I decided to stay.
The choice of food is vast. We went for the 5.95 two course meals. The bacon and onion suet pudding and the liver and bacon with mash was fantastic. This is home made food at its best and plenty of it too. A lovely sweet to follow really blows you out.
I personally thanked the landlord, Alan, (he'll be the one wearing Bermuda shorts and shirt) on the choice and quality of the food.
Most of my reviews knock rather than praise pubs. Reading the previous reviews I should be knocking this place - but I can't.
This was a lunchtime visit, maybe it changes mood in the evening.
8 out of 10 for the food.......1 for the beer because it was GK.

This is a local pub, there's nothing for you here. You don't understand our ways, our customs...

From the forbidding looks from the locals as you enter, to the bar "tapas" being added to by old men coughing their guts up at the bar, to a pool table where you can't just turn up and put your money in even if no one else is playing. No, one of the local yokels will chime up with "You 'ave to play me next, all-roight?". I was having none of that old testicles so me and the missus played a frame, although we did leave after that for our own health.

Fair enough though, I mean we spent 10 minutes playing on an unused pool table.

What a complete and utter dive.

mmmm, what can I say.The bar staff have no interest at all apart from the landlord and his wife who do try.Locals do take preference over the outsiders which I had to actually say "I think you'll find that I'm next" Which didnt go down too well but hey, bollocks to them.Bit of an atmosphere after that.
Havent eaten there due to the dog running in and out of the kitchen all the time which does put one off.Landlord and his wife keep on going to the kitchen to top their glasses up with their own wine, great appeal!.When I bought a glass of O.J. for my friend, the gormless barman just poured it straight from the Tescos Value carton to the glass,C'mon hasnt somebody got the sense to at least put it into a glass jug first? I tend to avoid the place due to these people running it (into the ground perhaps) Nice exterior lures folk in but the people on the interior drive them out.

Not a welcoming atomosphere..........a definite understatement, in fact after many years of going to this pub i've been highly disappointed with the new landlords.
A few friends and i went for and after dinner drink just to finish off the night, and were surprised initially at how quiet the place was for a Saturday. I now know why....we could here the landlord swearing at someone on the phone, clearly annoyed at them, but not really what you'd expect as a customer to hear. We decided to stay none the less and have a second drink, at which piont we were informed this was not possible as it was past last orders (no bell or announcement from the staff). The bar staff were rude and abrupt and having worked in this industry it's something you can not afford to have go on. They continued to serve their "friends" whilst we finished our drinks and they escorted us from the pub slamming and locking the door as we left. I have never felt so uncomfortable in my entire life and i can not recommend strongly enough to leave this pub off your list!

When I asked what the "Soup of the Day" was, I was told "Campbell's" ... which was honest, I suppose! Actually, the soup was fine - albeit from a tin - and I have been back since. Nice place.

Good food, reasonable beer. Staff and patrons can be a bit strange when you first go in, but all in all a decent boozer.

Very nice pub. Guinness and Old Speckled Hen well looked after. Pool table and dartboard provide sport, but are not intrusive. Good mix of clientele. Good simple food. Best landlord in Ely - always a beaming smile and a warm welcome.

a decent size, with a pool table and occassional live music; not too expensive, decent clientele. an all round fine pub.
