Themed food nights on Wednesday's (tapas) and Thursday's (Steak)
Visited on Thursday for 2 steaks and 2 drinks for £25.....very tasty. Normally 2 ales on, but only Doombar available for visit (sorry this Molson Coors owned beer that's brewed 267 miles from Rock in Cornwall doesn't excite me anymore !)
Still a great pub that is welcoming to all.

The banner announcing a mini beer fest was enough to tempt us back but judging by their usual 'range' of real ales I expected the worse but couldn't have been more wrong. Only 10 casks but a good range of styles from light to black and from unusual breweries. Shame it the stillage was in the dining room (the old public bar, where all the tables were laid for dinner on Friday night. Well done Star in Witley; I hope the next two days of the fest went well. If there were just two or three of those beers available regularly we would return as many times as we used to but with Doom Bar and another national beer on which seem to be widely available in other pubs in the area we regrettably are not drawn back.

Low-ceilinged traditional pub which served the traditional range of, er, Cornish ales. Time for a half before going for the train (though the pub isn't that close to the station). Seemed to be busy although there was hardly anyone in the front of the pub - maybe most of the action goes on in the rear.

This pub is a modernised local with a lounge at the front and a public bar and games room to the rear. Two uninspiring beers were on - Greene King IPA & Fullers London Pride. Addlestones was the cider. The lounge lacked any atmosphere at all. So we moved to the bar, where there was slightly more life. Not really my kind of pub.

Haven't been in for a while, but further improvements have been made since I last visited.
Popped in for a beer and a bite last night, and they've installed a real fire, and the pub is now "Cask Marque". Menu has changed too.
Currently serving GK IPA, London Pride and Doom Bar.
Would recommend the pie and mash, and a pint of Doom Bar.....lovely

With reference to Steamer1 - lets not compare a restaurant that sells beer to a pub that sells food. However I do agree that the range of ales on sale at the Refectory are superb. The food is cheaper at the Star though.
The Star is getting more popular by the week.
The beers have changed now to Ringwood Best, Sharps Doombar and Hogs Back TEA.
Had the TEA last night - very nice.
Have eaten there on a number of occasions and have pretty much worked my way through the menu. All the dishes I've had have been tasty, although it could do with a refresh every now and then.

Being the nearest pub to our house I wish the the new management well. Having said that we were disappointed when going for a meal and a few beers to find the choice very boring/predictable on the beerfront with 2 from Cornwall. Having said that the Tribute was excellent. it would nice to see more imagination in the choice. The competion in the revived Refectory in Milford is considerable. 2 people (the only others there) who seemed to know the new management were discussing that they couldn't see what had been done to the Refectory during it's short closure. Well whatever it was it's worked so try looking a little closer like the superb choice of beers on offer including local ales. I've been going to the Star since 1981 and we used to go twice a week for a beer and one of those would be for a meal. The choice initially wasn't good but improved immensely when the beer orders came in but then the two guys who ran it signed a new lease with S and N, I believe, limiting the choice of guest beers to that predictable list again and boy you should have seen the customers walk away. Things have really changed little despite management changes and expensive refits. It isn't always about the decor and fittings. I've been to some right dumps over the years that are heaving with customers. While I appreciate the new found quality in the ale we won't be going back often if there is nothing to excite the tastebuds and not withstanding the comments of "triumph" we probably are not alone. whilst we there a couple came in and after a look at the bar and/or menu walked out. I rest my case.

I've been back several times and can't fault the place.
The beers, whilst the same selection as before are well kept, and they now have a very decent chef. Varied menu with interesting twists like sweet potato chips, plus the normal roasts on a Sunday.
Beer garden and childrens play area at the back too.

NEW MANAGEMENT VERY FRIENDLY AND HAVING A REAL GO AT IT WELL DONE AND I KNOW IT CAN ONLY GET BETTER
loro - 7 Jul 2010 20:57
It has reopened under completely new management.
Really friendly owners made me feel very welcome.
A good selection of ales - Ringwood Best, Sharps DoomBar and St Austell Tribute.
Definitely going back.
triumph - 23 Jun 2010 13:38
I hear the owners have left and it is now shut? Is that correct?
Richardhadley - 14 Jun 2010 09:10
New manager seems to be doing a really good job. Pub quiz starting soon which should be excellent!

Hope it continues to improve, it is already a great little place. We will be going more often.

Locals should support this place or risk losing it!

A very pleasent evening out. Lovely beer garden where you can enjoy the evening sun. There is also a childrens play area which looked to be very good too. Food was delicous - if you are new to the pub then you must try the new curry menu. The curries can also be done for takeaway although we ate in. Pleasent staff, service quick and efficent. Definatly worth a visit.

good pub, good food, really nice decking area, staff are very helpful, only problem with this pub, is as said before....the landlord, he is by far the rudest and most arrogant landlord i have ever met, and having worked for a major drinks wholesaler, i met a lot and he really takes some beating as a rude, nasty man, i feel sorry for his staff. wont go back only because of him, i wish punch would get someone who actually likes customers and does not find them an inconvience!
foodandbeerlover - 25 Jun 2009 16:46
Tastefully refurbished pub offering Ringwood Best and Greene King IPA.
rentaquote - 24 May 2009 23:50
Well I would like to comment on the food but unfortunately never got to taste any!! Have lived in Witley/Godalming area for more years than I care to mention, and seen the Star change many times!!! Popped in one Saturday lunch time - it was approaching 2.00 pm only wanted a sandwich and a drink, but the bar staff said kitchen was closed!!! so we left and went to the White Hart further up the road, who again said that the kitchen was closed, but would be happy to make us up some sandwiches, what a difference in attitude - been back to the White Hart many times, but wont be going to the Star, well not until they get a new landlord, and the way he treats people I dont think it will be long....

Eugh.

I can honestly say I've never met a man more angry than the current landlord of this souless hole. Not only is he rude to the point of being outright aggressive, he clearly has no idea how to run a pub. The staff seem petrified of him, and as a result are excruciatingly nervous, which lead to them being, well, crap.

Beer was average, if that. Food was in a similar vein.

It's such a shame, a great location, brilliant garden, parking, ample room and, from what I could make out, the only pub in the village. Can only pray that the landlord leaves, as this could be an absoloutely corking boozer. Thought I'd stumbled onto a gem just outside my favourite country retreat of Godalming(I visit the area from London every other weekend), turns out I was wrong.

Great little pub, good decor, good effecient service.
Food is delicous and extremly fair portioned.

quickdrinker - 30 Jul 2008 01:27
Hmmm beerman only comment on this pub huh.
Any how we found the pub ok as giveusabeer says it`s not cheap but it`s good not many in the lunchtime we were there, service was good, portions just enough not large, beer is expensive but once again its not down to the landlord its those bloody Punch pub co. rip off merchants (dont we just hate them).Refurb has been done to a good standard possibly reflected in the prices.
Beersupper - 26 Jun 2008 10:26
Become a "gastro pub" since the refurb. The food is good (but have to disagree with previous post as the portions are on the small size - my mash potato came served in a ramakin dish - feed your eyes rather than your stomach). The beer is very pricey - 3.20-3.30 per pint, maybe to discourage the locals using it as a drinking pub, not sure.

Great pub, family friendly
The food was astonishing and great portions, nicely set out!
The menu was full of choice for both adults and children.
Was very happy to be there as it was comfortible and kids had there own little play area!

What more is there to say it's a great pub!!
Enjoyed my visit there.

What a change the refurb has made i think its very well done. The food we all had was good the drinks were also. Not the cheapest place but well worth the money.
giveusabeer - 18 Oct 2007 19:18
Currently closed & undergoing a refurb and from what I see so far, it looks very good. Sign on front says "Bars and family dining" Should be opening soon.
triumph - 26 Jul 2007 20:38
Popped in the other night, beers are now IPA, Spitfire and Timothy Taylor Landlord - very tasty! One note however, don't be put off by the public bar at the front (if that's not your thing) the restaurant/saloon bar is round the back.
triumph - 27 Dec 2006 11:58
Good selection of Real Ales - Green King IPA, Wells Bombadier and a guest ale which last night was Spitfire. Great food at reasonable prices and a friendly atmosphere with staff to match. Try it.
