Look,is this a bar or a damn restaurant?!
Yes yes yes......I'm sure they are nice burgers, but what about the booze and the prices?!!Jeeez!!

Great burgers and a great selection of beers. My only criticism is the prices of some of the keg beers - I don't mind paying a bit extra for imported stuff, but on my last visit, I paid around 5.50 for a pint of Jaipur (really should have checked the prices first).

It was a lovely pint, but at almost 2 a pint more than a cask beer, I thought it represented poor value for money.

Nice bar but went in lunchtime on a Thursday and it was deserted - ordered a pint of Green Jack Australian Summer Pale Ale (ABV 3.7%) and was charged 3.60 - not surprised the place was so quiet at those prices.

We had our Christmas meal at Bensons last Friday and it was fabulous. The food was excellent and the service really really good. It was very busy but the staff kept things going really well. There was a DJ and the atmosphere was brilliant
The only downside was that it closed at 1.00am

Agree totally with my wife; this place serves the best burgers outside of the USofA
They have some weird combinations but all the ones that I have tasted really work
Best bar in the area

We have just returned to the UK and went back to Benson Blakes to see whether the burgers are as good as we remembered; they're not, they're MUCH BETTER. The deli burger is really unusual and tastes great
For any fellow Americans out there, give this place a try; it is AWESOME
Best burgers I have tasted outside of the US and better than a lot from there
These guys really put out the best
Try the hot alcoholic drinks; they are great Mulled wine and buttered rum are just the best

First time in this bar last night and it was busy, unlike everywhere else in Bury. Excellent place, great service My girlfriend asked for a gin and tonic and was given a list of gins to choose from. Great touch. She tried to work her way through it but did not manage it. I tried Stella Black for the first time and it was really good; why don't other places stock it

Will certainly be back to try the burgers; they looked great

Best bar in Bury with the best food; the burgers are brilliant and so are the staff
rockchix90 - 1 Nov 2010 16:47
Great bar with fantastic food; the burgers are awesome !!!
I like that you can see straight into the kitchen and you can see that everything is clean. I ate there in the day and assumed that it was more of a restaurant but on Friday night, it rocks.
The music is good and not too loud and the staff are really good

Definatly recommend this place as the best place I have been to in Bury

Good name for a tune `When a man love`s a burger` instant hit me thinks.
Don`t worry be appy !

Did somebody mention burgers?
churchyboy - 4 Oct 2010 07:46
This place is better than when i was here before; the burgers are awesome. I have been missing a real good patty; Burger king on base just is not the same as a real homemade individual burger

The portion are great and the french fries are like potatoes but real good; not crispy like thin ones but full of flavour

Chocolate cake to die for and they do great cocktails

Hi
My wife told me about this place about a year ago, just before we got posted away. We got back a couple of weeks ago and she remembered it as she said the burgers were awesome; they won some award or something

Well, she was right; these are the best burgers that I have ever tasted outside the States. The meat comes from a farm just near to where we are staying and apparently, we can see the actual steers that will become next months burgers.

The staff were really friendly and very very good; they really know how to make someone welcome.

Anybody missing a real good burger should come here and try them; the rest of the food is real good to and they are kid friendly

Try it and you won't regret it

Very pleasant place for a drink. They have a constantly rotating choice of real ales. Called in on a Monday night and it was quiet but I can imagine it gets a bit lively later in the week. I'd certainly call in here again for a drink.

Benson Blakes is a truely fantastic pub and is different from the norm. Owners take great care and pride in what they offer the customers. Food is great - range of draught is lovely with quality continental lagers offering a choice to all. I love this place
timo78 - 21 Jul 2010 20:28
erm......you wouldn't be the owner, or a relative by any chance would you?....hmmm.
I am not a 'dinosaur'.I regularly drink in pubs, clubs, nightclubs up and down the uk.
My point was that this is basically nothing new or distinctive in itself.
'grew up in one, will probably die in one'.
any chance you could order some Old Rosie in?
Cheers

What is that last bloke talking about ? He sounds like a dinosaur and wants to just live in the past. This is a great bar with an excellent range of drink ( they have just added a new real ale beer pump and they had two awesome beers on Nethergates Umble Magner and Brewdogs Trashy Blonde. Absolutly brilliant !!!
The food is just as good as it always is
If you want to drink in a brilliantly run modern bar ( as opposed to a traditional pub ) you could not do better anywhere

Sorry, but I've lived in Bury St Edmunds all my life, and I have been crawling around its pubs for 25 years....7.5 out of 10 for this place?Truth?its where you go to look at the opposite sex late after pre-loading elsewhere.Simple as.Yeah, nice sofas,'groovy' muzak, blah blah blah.......a nightclub for people who don't like nightclubs.Yawn..................
toolster - 27 Oct 2009 19:27
Wow, this site is great. It lists so many pubs and bars. Reckon I will have to work through them all
This bar was my third last night and it was the best. The food was awesome; as good as home. I will be back
Try the chorizo and smoked cheese burger; really great.
Would have preferred fries instead of the big chips but they were different and not bad.
Great staff and great place
Worth a visit; you won't be disappointed
usdude84 - 20 Aug 2009 13:22
This is a great bar.
I have only just come over from the US and did not think I would get a decent burger over here but they are just great; as good as the best I've tasted anywhere
The music is good ( jazz, blues ) and the staff are great, especially the cute one with the black hair
Would recommend this bar to everyone who wants a cool evening

Went to this bar last Saturday on a night out in Bury. Very busy but service was excellent even though the staff were working very hard.
I had a Benson Blakes burger which was just the best ever; really juicy and tasty
Really well worth a visit
I will be returning on a quieter night to see whether it is as good or, as I am sure will be the case, better. In a town of grotty pubs, this one really stands out
sandiee - 7 Aug 2009 13:25
This place is brilliant; excellent food and choice of drinks. The staff are really great and make you feel really welcome.
The cocktails are awesome
crossee - 7 Aug 2009 13:16
Went in with a group of friends en route to one of BSE's less salubrious nightspots. Wasn't expecting much from the outside but was fairly surprised. The interior is obviously very 'modern bar', all pine and chocolate colours.

One ale on sale (unexpected) which was Nethergate Umbel Magna (hooray!) which in the GK stranglehold of BSE was fantastic. Quality of beer was good (though turnover was rapid which helps). Staff were impressively quick and good-natured.

The interior was quite rammed and it was fairly uncomfortable to stand without knocking into someone. It was Friday night though, so I guess that's par for the course. Clientle were pre-clubbers - girls flashing flesh with hair rigidly straightened and lads with too much hair gel wearing the latest Primark number, talking quite loudly over the less-than-background music.

Overall, not bad. If you're on a night out here, you could do worse.
Quinno - 8 Jun 2009 20:46
Excellent place; we moved here a few months ago and tried all the local establishments; unfortunatly, most pubs are Greene King and do not seem to understand the idea of service. Bensons is the best in town for food and the drinks. The Nethergate Umbel ale was stunning so am not sure what the previous comments were about
The staff are really friendly; they are led by Tim Blake who is a real character and seems to know all there is to know about drinks
THIS PLACE IS GREAT !!!!
Paul.Martin1969 - 27 May 2009 10:45
When is a 'pub' not a 'pub'?.......
...when it doesn't even sell Guinness!!
A desert for real ale drinkers or people not seeking pretentious cocktails.
bought 3 drinks in here. One was a pint, the other two concoctions of the 'lady variety'......17!!
One redeeeming quailty is attractive clientele and reputed good food.
One of those bars with great aspirations but nothing of any real class to contribute to a Suffolk night out.
Come here to view contemporary rural mating rituals, not a pint.
toolster - 11 Dec 2008 17:15
For the real ale drinker there is nothing here. Usually a bad pint served too warm and because everyone seeems to drink lagers, no turnover of beer. Only one hand pump. Will give this place a miss in future.
Wappo - 5 Dec 2008 09:33
This place just gets better; the new menu is excellent and the range of wines and beers superb
beccyscarff - 22 Sep 2008 11:51
Just moved to Bury from London and was not looking forward to grotty pubs but Bensons is fantastic; as good as anything in London with the advantage that the staff are really friendly
Well done, you will see a lot of me
fred123456789 - 17 Sep 2008 12:12
Fantastic service.
The guys were really friendly and helpful.
I sat down to look at the menu and one of them came over, took our drinks order and bought them to the table, what service!!!
Food great, could have done with more bread with the platter was the only complaint.
Amazing smoke free before 3.00pm, really impressed with that.
allysonkeith - 23 Apr 2007 13:08
This place is a haven in an otherwise very boring town; service is very good, food is excellent and the range of drinks is fantastic
johnroberts - 15 Aug 2006 10:30
Excellent bar; great atmosphere. Recommend for a really good night out
anonymous - 8 Aug 2006 19:34
