please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

We visited this pub on a Friday afternoon at 3pm, and found it welcoming and with a friendly atmosphere. The clientele was a mix of ages and everyone seemed to be having a good time without being too intrusive. The beer is McMullens which is not to everyone's taste, but my AK was well-kept and drinkable. Had a couple of very pleasant hours here, and this pub is definitely in Hitchin's top 5.

Good locals pub, with one room set aside for sport. Can be busy on big Rugby and Football occassions. Like the food here, all freshly prepared, but kitchin is not open all day and not Fri/Sat evenings. Beer is always excellent, the landlord keeps a good cellar. Reasonably priced for a town centre pub.

I use the Coopers to watch sport and eat (the food is very good but pricey in my opinion) being a McMullens pub the beer is truly awful and the draught cider is of course Strongbow, which is also truly awful. Very good pint of Guinness but dear.

I have great memories of drinking in this pub over the years, still warm and friendly as ever.
Recent drink showed me this too.... recommend an evening there.
Agree, McMullen cask is good, but i have many memories of stumbiln home after a joyous night!

As said, good for a few beers, McMullen cask is as good as you'll taste, and relatively whopper-free as it's off the main drag. Few Kings Arms exiles to watch out for, though.

I posted a review 18 months ago and was dragged back recently. Still not my pub of choice, but I will give it credit - McMullens does not, in my view, produce particularly tasty beer. However, the Coopers produced a pint of it that was much better than I can remember having in any other McMullens pub. So if you want to watch some sport, the Coopers is worth consideration.

Best pub in Hitchin. Well-kept beer, friendly regulars and a decent food menu. Highly recommended.

Lovely looking pub, probably the best looking in Hitchin with it's oak beams and traditional feel one side and an almost church like feel on the other due to the shape of the windows which dates back to when some of the building was a monastery. Nice atmosphere due to the fact it is set back from the town centre up a cul-de-sac so most non locals would not have a clue where it was. Drink is quite expensive though and the food menu is looking a bit tired. A better "winter" pub as it lends itself to dark, cold nights with the log fire blazing.

It's Ok, I must say it's well work a visit. I had a meal here and was happy, they have a good menu and it was good value for money too. My wife didn't rave about it, but we were checking out the competition you try to pick out all the faults.

Admitittadly it was quiet when we visited so i can't knock the service, and the staff were friendly enough.

It does get busy at weekends and when there's sporting events as it still accomidates sky.

The customers are cool as it's a little off the main drag to attract the drunken idiots.

It's one of the oldest pubs in Hitchin and is a beautiful building with an amazing history. Go have a look you could do worse.

Ok for a few beers and the football if you can bend your neck to see the tiny screens.

Average in every respect other than the lovely, old building.

I suppose the beer is reasonably well kept for McMullens, but it's a shame there's no guest ales. The pub's above average, but not in the same league as others within a short walking distance.

nice old traditional pub. beers are fine, though nothing out of the ordinary selection wise. been to a few good parties there, the perfect place for Christmas Eve etc..

Nice old pub. Depending on which direction you walk from you may have to walk up the hill to get there. At least that gives you a thirst :)

They sell the local McMullens AK beer which is well kept and taste lovely.

A good mixture of people in there, not too loud. I think there is a juke box but nothing was being played on it last time I was there.

For a McMullens pub this is a good one. The beer is usually in good condition. Only problem is the "Guest" beer is quite often an unbadged McMullens seasonal, rather than a true guest.

Good lunchtime pub, oldlie worldie feel, efficient staff, good food. McMullens beer well kept but crying out for a guest ale. Roger

Went here last night after being at the Sunnrunner. Big dissapointment after having such a good selection of beers at the last pub. Beer was top quality though.

Can't have everything. Being a northern boy, brews like McMullens don't really do it for me. Too isipid I'm afraid. Nice pub though. Good food, and for home counties ale, it is OK.

GOOD TRADITIONAL BOOZER, GOOD BEER, NOT A SHINY SHIRT PUB
