More a restaurant than a pub. Great food though. You can't book a table though, so get there early or expect a wait.

We went to this pub after returning from a great day out in Bath, It is an Old Building that is over 400 years old and has been a pub for the last 200 years after having been converted from a farmhouse and barn. It still retains many original features like the Old Fire places, doors and low ceilings.
I would love to be able to have a really good look around this old building when it was quiet but with food and service this good i think that it will always be busy. The Pub is mostly taken up with restaurant seating with only a small area around the bar where there were a couple of people having a drink.

It really is a lovely place to go and the service was second to none. The waiters were all very smartly dressed, very attentive and helpful.
I had The Classic Mixed Grill and it was really lovely consisting of rump steak, gammon, chicken and sausage with a free range egg, Chips for 11.55 from the Chef and Brewer Menu, They also have their own specials menu with some really great looking dishes.

The Food was Lovely and it is certainly worth a visit, I would love to go back again soon.

This could be a really beautiful pub, it has a really old character about it, and the staff are friendly and I am sure the food is excellent, however on a recent visit, to see if it would be okay for a 50th Wedding Anniversary I was appalled at the state of this pub, the carpets were worn and dirty, some of the seating was torn and ragged, there is candlegrease hanging from danglers which eventally accumulates on the carpet. I would go there for a drink OUTSIDE, because the views are terrific, but have a meal there, no way!!!!

Very impressed with this Chef & Brewer pub/restaurant. Always busy but well managed and staff have always been very efficient. Service is excellent with a very wide choice of meals on the menu. Well done.

Visited this pub on Monday 14th April, had to wait for a table. There were eight of us in the party and the meals we had were excellent. It was well worth the wait. Service was excellent and there was a good selection of real ales. I did note however that no bar tariff was displayed which is against the law. All in all a good pub well worth a visit.

The person below is obviously someone below who either works for that stinking pub in machen or is so up his own ass he dosent like anywhere else that dosent make you feel as if you have to wear a suit. I went to the Fwrrwm Ishta in Machen a cuople weeks ago for sunday lunch. Not only did they look at me as if I was a tramp for wearing shorts but then they served me a beef steak so tough I couldnt eat it and personally beleive that a freaking lion would even have trouble!!! The Maenllwyd Inn, is a beautiful place with great service and an atmoshphere that makes you feel wanted and well serviced. The food is delicious, and is cooked all from fresh products which is the highest of quality. There is a wide range of dishes available which will satisfy any appitite, and is cooked by in my oppinion one of the best chefs in the world 'Lloyd'. He is Jamaican...and lets face it, we all know they can cook! Best of all, he cooks it as if its going to be him eating it everytime.....absolutly perfect!!!!!!!!!

I stand by my previous comments. I wasn't expecting a 5 star restaurant. But,the fact remains that this establishment charges near restaurant prices for, what is in effect, below par pub food. It offers poor value for money and poor service, unless you are "local" of course!

I'm not referring to one isolated event either, I've made several visits and have tried various dishes from the menu. Everytime was a disappointment, especially considering the prices/ menu descriptions.

I was brought up in a restaurant/pub environment, my father was a chef (trained in the West End, Mayfair/Park Lane etc)and a very successful licensee, so I do know a bit about food.

The fayre on offer at this pub is mostly bought in from a preferred supplier, frozen,pre-packaged etc. Charging restaurant prices for this is criminal! I would suggest that the previous poster wouldn't know poo from clay......................?

If you want superb, seasonal and "freshly prepared" food at very reasonable prices, in a "pub" type environment, you should try the Fwrrwm Ishta in Machen. They could teach the proprietors of this overated eatery a thing or two.

I agree about the setting though, it is a beautiful pub and the location is lovely. An important aspect of this pubs popularity. Just shame about the food and service, what a waste. :(

I would urge people to ignore the review from December 2006. Maybe that person was expecting a five star restaurant, I'm not sure.

I adore this pub. Everything about it is wonderful, the location, the staff, the food! Especially the food. Yes, when it's busy you may have to wait for your table but it really is worth the wait.

Yes, local people use it as their local. But believe me, you don't have to wait for the locals to be served before you! The food certainly isn't overpriced sh*t. Perhaps if you go to a place that has an assortment of wonderful food but you chose a curry, well, what does that tell you.

I cannot recommend this place enough, but having said that, I've not told my friends about it. It's my secret place!

We have been to this pub on 2 occassions and despite being extremely busy, had friendly and efficient service. Our last visit was with 2 disabled people on Sundy lunchtime, there was a long wait for a table, but seats were provided fro the disabled people to sit. When we were seated we had excellent service and food. We highly recommend this pub and will visit frequently.

Lovely old pub, very Olde Worlde, in a beautiful setting.

Unfortunately, it's a local pub for local people. If your face isn't known then forget getting served! You'll have to wait until the regulars have ordered before you even get acknowledged!

Then there's the food! Overpriced sh*t!!!

No menus, you have to wander around trying to read wallmounted chalkboards.

The dishes sound tempting but don't be fooled. I ordered a Thai curry. I ended up with a plate of boil in the bag wild rice and what tasted like a jar of Knorr Sizzle & Stir Tikka Masala with some lumps of chicken, all for 12.........Bargain!!!
