user reviews of The Royal Standard, Wandsworth

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Royal Standard is situated a stone's throw from Wandsworth Town station. It's a corner pub at the bottom of a terraced street. It had quite a modern feel. But it's only a small affair with toilets upstairs. There are 2 handpulls. But only 1 was in use - Reigate Pilgrim Progress. A couple of South Africans were in and were dispelling the merits of English pubs but were not as impressed with the English weather!

Pub 5 of the crawl.

£14.00 for 4 pints Of Timothy Taylor which went down very well.

Great atmosphere. Friendly staff & clientele. A pleasant surprise for the night.

Only two ales but the one I had was great and cheap for the area.

If I ever found myself in the area this is where I would go.

Was invited down to the pub with a few friends last Saturday night and I must say what a little gem they had 2 real ales on , one locally brewed called wandle if I remember rightly. The place had a great atmosphere and all the locals seemed friendly ,guiness good ,staff had some personality which seems to be lacking in most pubs nowadays.
Will probably go back if ever in the area again looks like a good place to watch sport!

Lacked much in the way of ale, just one on I think. Felt a bit bare inside.

Decent unpretentious little boozer. Not a huge range of ale but preferable to The Alma

Great little boozer, nice bar staff, comfy sofas, friendly drinkers, not the best selection of beers mind....... pleasant place for a few drinks with a mate

Lovely surprise to go in on a cold, late, January afternoon. We sat on one of the sofas and watched life going on. Noticed what looked like one bloke trading some fish for his evening's drinking. That's the way the local works! Doom Bar as good as in Cornwall. Forget the Alma and Ship - go here.

London Pride and Doom Bar on handpump. The Doom Bar I had wasnt particularly good, although just about drinkable, and at 3 a pint the going rate for the London suburbs I suppose. London Pride was the other real ale on. The floor was either black lacquered or had a black floor covering; there were three or four wooden tables with wooden chairs, and one settle adorned with cushions, and two sofas with a table between them. There was a TV showing the footy results, but on the plus side there was no one-armed bandit or games machine. The service was friendly enough. Obviously its a small one-room pub. Its another OK pub, without, in my opinion, being anything special.

I agree with London_Calling. It's one of my locals to which I always return. It's a welcome break from The Alma and The Ship ( 2 pubs which i like a lot) when they get a bit too much, i.e. too busy, too braying. Good atmosphere, friendly crowd and staff. It's good for rugby too if that's your bag. The ale changes relatively frequently- Landlord is always good and often on, although sometimes GK IPA's the only choice and I try to boycott them. My only concern is that, as mentioned below, it might unnecessarily be going down a balearic-beats slightly too-cool-for-school route. I hope not because, as it stands, it's a great boozer.

I like it, I like it alot. Decent boozer. Nice chat with the barman, decent pint, good atmosphere. Sport on the box when it's on, sport in the corner (Darts) when it's not too busy. Landlord on tap (delicious), and a good selection of nuts and crisps. One comment - sort out the baleric beats I sometimes hear in this place (normally early doors). Not needed.

Giving it an 8/10.

Thumbs Up, London Calling.

I found the staff and the other punters in here to be very friendly and I really enjoyed my stay. The Landlord was on good form and Greene King IPA was also available alongside San Miguel and some standard lagers.

There are plenty of TVs for the watching of all things sport and there is also a dartboard as you walk through the entrance. I saw some signs for a beer garden out the back, but it was far to cold to entertain the idea of venturing outside.

The pub is quite small and can get packed out, but I would still gladly go back here again for a few jars.

Love this pub. Its small and unpretentious. You can order take out to eat in which is novelty and it has a nitendo Wii which is pretty sweet! recently taken over by new managers, seem ok if a little stand-offish. hope they dont mess with it too much as it is perfect the way it is!

What a little gem! reminds me of pubs I know in Whitstable and Brighton. Relaxing atmosphere, good beer and you can bring your own food. As a boy from Haringey, Wandsworth seems to have a wealth of great pubs!

No longer a TUP, owned by Massive still tho.

Seems to be one of the only real pubs in the area. Real people and no pretentions to be a gastropub (bring your own food !!)

Almost want to keep it secret

good staff and good times every time I have been in and thats quite often

As long as there isn't a big rugby game on the TV, an excellent place for some darts. Beer reasonable.
Dart_Man - 29 Nov 2006 14:02
As the other reviewers have said its a very pleasant standard pub with good range of beers and wines
snooop - 12 Nov 2006 12:43
Still the better pub in the immediate area. Staff always good, real locals drink here, good sport on the TV & dogs (canine) are allowed

A cracking little boozer. Really sound bar staff, good atmosphere, decent beer. Real treat to have a pub with a dartboard too.

Tends to get packed out during rugby internationals so get there early or avoid if rugby union's not your bag. Clientele are a lot more 'normal' than the usual braying drinkers you seem to get in other pubs in the area.

Top pub - a real 'local'.

10/10.

Unspectacular but adequate little boozer. Youngs has recently replaced GKIPA as the only bitter. A reasonable place to throw darts, watch footy, eat your chips, and avoid the public schoolboys of the Alma/East Hill.

Really nice pub, nicely real pub. With no kitchen the aforementioned takeaway option is an excellent idea, the beer is well kept, there's enough in the way of entertainments for what is a small bar and there's no pretentiousness. A place to drink for certain.
OJ360 - 3 Feb 2006 11:20
Drank quite a bit in here during the summmer. Best pub in the area with a very unpretentious clientelle compared to the types you get in The Alma and The East Hill. All sports shown and pleasant bar staff. Good thing is that you can order your favourite takeaway and eat it in the pub, condiments included!!! Only downside is that it is a tad pricey.
Lozmate - 6 Dec 2005 14:06
Top staff, nice sofa if it isn't already taken, nice cheap pint of Green King IPA on handpull.
JazzyB - 21 Aug 2003 13:07
This is a great little pub. Shows all major sporting events, has a dart board and you can order a take away and eat it in the pub. Service with a smile which makes a change!
Jules - 31 Jul 2003 13:27
Robin - did you by chance give that pizza and garlic bread to some people on a pub crawl?
An interesting pub - very quiet when we went in last night and they'd run out of beer which can't be good. I suppose it could be a good night with the right atmos.

What can I say about this pub? It is quite literally amazing. Not only is it a great pub (with dart board) in its own right, you can order take-away food to be delivered to the pub and eat it in there. They provide the plates and cutlery. Forget the wheel, this truly is the best idea I have ever heard of!
