Geographically this was the 'high point' of our Friday crawl... and socially, the lowest. This pub is the furthest pub from the town centre, and involves walking up arundels famous hill. It is not worth it!
The bar was sticky and the carpet dirty. We hid at the darkest table. But were pursued by two other men apparently work at some local horse thing. They smelt a bit like the carpet. The swearing was constant and involved both f and c words!
My sister who lives in Arundel says no one but the stablehands ever go in there - and it has a bad reputation. It might be ok in the day, but in the evening it's a cesspit.

The worst of all the pubs we visited in Arundel, we didn't even finish our drinks. No quality, no cleaning, no point. Close it and make it into a house.

This pub is a favourite of mine. Stayed there in July 2007 and returning next week. Very friendly staff and locals. The four-poster rooms are spacious and surprisingly inexpensive. Good selection of beers and food. I live 500 miles away but made some friends there last time and have been looking for an excuse to return. Recommended.

Good jazz from the George Regis Jazz Band on the last Friday of every month.
There is always a welcome from the staff behind the bar, and a good time is guarenteed!

Great pub, with jazz on the last Friday of the month.
I ate there, for the first time, in December, 2006. The menu was standard pub food, well presented and cooked. A pint of "Terry's Tipple" went down well. It was probably Gribble "Firsty Ferret", by another name, as the pub is in the same group of Hall & Woodhouse Inns as the Gribble Inn at Oving, that brews at the pub. The landlord, Terry Bedford, runs a well kept cellar, and is always a wellcoming host.

Its great for us as we can take our dog in there too.

Not really pub any more, just a barn that serves beer and food.

Good pub for jazz on the last Friday evening of the month!
I would not go there, but for the jazz, as it is 30miles from home! Food portiond seem to be of a good size, and the prices look reasonable.

In the shadow of the towering Roman Catholic Cathedral, is the St. Mary’s Gate Inn. The surprisingly long and roomy interior is comprised of a bar area to the right, a partitioned dining area to the left and a smaller central section, in front of which is a separate, self-enclosed television room. There is also a non-smoking area, en-suite accommodation, and the first cash machine that I have ever seen in a pub. Today the Liverpool and Portsmouth cup-tie is being shown, Sunday lunch is well underway, and the pub is packed with all types of people. Like the Black Rabbit, the St Mary’s Gate is a Hall and Woodhouse traditional inn, and sells K&B Sussex Bitter, Badger Best Bitter and Tangelfoot, but is apparently regarded as less ‘select’ than the former establishment as there is no forthcoming Gribble Fursty Ferrett. What is does have, though, is Badger IPA. I’m not sure what in marketing terms this says about the place, but I dare to be distinctive and different and order a half (£1.20). I find it as a brand to be somewhat less bland than, say, Greene King IPA (although that is hardly a recommendation), but I can have no complaints about the condition of the beer, nor the size of food portions – my crusty sandwich bap is like a roast dinner in itself, complete with potatoes.
