user reviews of the Castle Hotel, Aberystwyth

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

We didn't get to partake of the jukebox because the TV was on loud (a common problem on this trip to Wales) but the ornate exterior of the pub is pleasing and the pool table a welcome feature. Very quiet of a Tuesday evening but a decent enough stopver on an Aber crawl.

Great little pub with a good atmosphere.

Brilliant jukebox, two tvs usually showing different sports - but in a way that doesn't take away from the atmosphere.

The real ale is kept very well, however it can be a bit hit and miss whether it is on or not. However nine times out of ten you can be sure they'll have it on at the weekend.

Nice comfy seats and interiors - and probably the cleanest toilets in Aberystwyth!

No it isn't, and it's had an expensive, trendily clinical refit (which only extends as far as the toilet doors). Lost some atmosphere as result, especially as the top of the old Victorian-style bar has been ripped out (why?!?!)

Has one or two of the old bits left (like the Jukebox, dart board and lethal pole) and now serves real ale, for the first time in years.

In some ways better, in some ways worse. So about the same, but at least I can get a decent pint.

Have heard that this is going to be closed down and converted into flats! Is this true?!?

Local live music on a Friday this place is always buzzing. Friendly staff and a nice pint of Mild. Got a good jukebox and the potential for a game of darts. Little bit out of the way, one for the dedicated drinkers.

Brains Dark Keg MILD is very steep at 2.30 a pint, better off drinking the same stuff in the "Lord Beeching" where a pint is only 1.70 or "The Fountain" where the genuine cask product can be had during happy for 1.80.

Conversation in the Castle is very loud and so creating a quite off putting cacophany.

No ale on anymore. Rubbish!

The Castle has a lways been a bit of a weird one. Stuck out by South Beach in the student ghetto, it plays host to a weirdly odd mix of hard-nose locals, and students in fancy dress. Every time I go in I expect a fight to start, but I've never seen or heard of one yet.

Beer is pretty average, but Sunday lunch is usually good. Has a dartboard!

Always expect RRRROCK on the juke box and a Band Of Builders playing old Quo covers every now and again.

Good beer (hancocks), pool table, cheap vodka, great jukebox, arrows, live music, by the sea, what more could you want? Can be a bit expensive for aber, but a great place to start the night. Always enter the raffles, you never know what or when you might win!

An excellent place to begin your night. It contains an amazing juke box and wide range of drink. Fantastic prizes given away in competitions.

Me and my friends spent most of our second year at Uni in this pub..vodka and coke for 48p on wednesdays and fridays..can't beat it. Used to have great live music (if a bit loud)- hope they still do! Dartboard, pool table and ace jukebox.
