Glad to see it back in use again.

Lets just hope that the new management treat the local residents in the surrounding properties with a bit more respect this time.

Been here on numerous occasions, im from the north and i know a good sunday roast when i see one, The carvery choice is fantastic and the little veg fusions ie mustard and parsley etc etc is great too, adds some interesting twists on a typical dinner.

The staff are very friendsly and helpful, place is very homely too.

I have taken friends there too and they loved it.

I been all over england with work etc and enjoy trying sunday roast dinners and carveries from dozens and dozens of pubs.

I gonna say this from the heart, the food is as close to my mothers roast dinners as can be and thats as good a compliment as i can give.

Big hand for everyone at this fine establishment.

Ha ha! Like it Alzheimers! Although with a name like that, is it possible you have forgotten the real prices? Sorry, could not resist.

Like I say, not tried it yet but I have eaten in and around London all my life (39 years) and have had some superb steaks in that time that take some beating, so all I am saying is I would like to test for myself and then I can fairly compare.

The owner of the Plough eats in the Pig? This is hardly rare, I know most local pubs all get on with each other and share business, its not a bad idea doing it this way and if he likes the food then maybe I should ask him too before trying it! Thats got nothing to do with the pub itself though, The Plough is a nice pub in my opinion, I don't actually care who eats where!

By the way, I can get a 10 oz steak in Ealing for 5 which still hasn't been beaten for taste and value, so maybe I will come along next Wednesday, before I hobble back to my soup kitchen...

Maybe Music Maestro should try the steak night on Wednesdays. 10 oz. sirloin steak, chips, tomato, garlic mushrooms and peas for 5. Sunday Carvery - 2 courses for 12.00. All organic meat ! My girlfriend and I are regulars at this pub and no, neither of us have ever worked there, surprise, surprise. I am glad you liked the Plough as I often see the owner, Vitor eating in the Pig and Whistle, he-he. Are you eating in the soup kitchens in Inner London to get cheaper than this?

alzheimers - 7 Nov 2008 15:01
hmm, you get the feeling vetnurse might be related or actually BE one of the owners by the past post!

As for the greatest steak night in London, I would suggest you need to try other places first! I am new to the area and have not tried the food myself so its only fair i make a comment on that at a later date should I try for myself.

Its a bit worrying that the pub shuts randomly, is this really the case?

Anyway, the pint I had was fine, the service was quick and I was met by a smile. It was extremely quiet in there but it looked homely enough, the meals sounded quite expensive though. I may not have been here long but I can tell you now Walthamstow should not be charging inner London prices!!!

great bar staff and the owners are fab too..
the weds night steak night is the best in london by far. the sunday carvery is ovely and you always get service with a smile. highly recommend this pub!

I have now been here 3 times (during September 08), allbeit always on a Sunday and have to say that food and service was great (organic 3 meat carvery, and the best one I have tasted in london by far). It seems to be family run (they may be new owner ?) The beers were fine, although no draft bitter (they did have bitter by the bottle). The girlfriend badgers me to go every Sunday now, such is the quality.

I went in at 7.00 on a sunday night to be told they were closed, does this pub still do food ?
martynd - 25 Aug 2008 08:33
Ha ha ha the last entry says it all! Pie Chips and Salad! That great old East End dish! What a laugh! This is probably the worse excuse for a pub around. It isn't a real pub anyhow having been a couple of old shops. What is famous about it anyway? It is only infamous as being one of the worse in the area. I mean what other pub closes on a Saturday as it has recently?

I must pop in and have a Pie Chips and Salad and maybe some tartar sauce and anchovy dressing on the side! They do a two for one meal deal now and then but the trouble is they can never get two people in there at once.
rogerthedodger - 19 Aug 2008 11:18
The BITE admins need to re-instate this pub. Went there about a month ago and chilled out in the back garden while the sun shined.

Service was very friendly and I had a pie chips and salad which was genuinely fantastic - and I don't say that lightly.

Perhaps it's got new owners?

Now to be fair i've given this three goes. after my experience the other day, I vowed never to go back, but my mate insisted as he works up the road and I met him for a drink. I did not eat. I didnt tell him i'd eaten there before. He got his order in and he waited ages. It came up cold and he left most of it. I told him later that day when we went for as drink in the Waltham Oak. He went a little mad to say the least!
offthewagon07 - 11 Dec 2007 12:58
Went in and ordered their special which came up after waiting ages. It was bloody cold like the atmosphere of the place. Empty and lifeless. Terrible place.
offthewagon07 - 8 Dec 2007 11:38
Don't know what the last person is talking about.

I went in for a Sunday carvery and the food was fantastic and didn't wait long. The Castle does good food but no better.

I'M SURE THE PUB IS OPENED!!!!!!!!
bungle_bodyjar - 19 Nov 2007 14:16
I went in here for a meal in the evening. I only asked for a carvery and it took so long to serve that I actually fell asleep! It was the worse meal i've ever eaten in a pub. Just awful. There was one other bloke in there who seemed to have a personality disorder. I told the bloke that I did'nt enjoy the meal and he shrugged his shoulders! I will be going up the Castle in the Village as i've been told that he does good food there (or just eat at home!). I am fed up with the rubbish that these so called gastro pubs turn out
offthewagon07 - 15 Nov 2007 15:45
It has reopened again, went there a few weeks ago on a sunday, and there was not one customer in there. I didn't stay for a drink

I have just got my "Tuesday Quiz fix" after suffering from withdrawal symptoms for the last 2 months whilst the Pig and Whistle was being refurbished.
So whats changed....well
(i) the quizmaster has changed and in turn so have the wisecracks!!! (a good thing...or maybe not!)
(ii) the beer - they are ice cold and fizzy - they even sell a RUSSIAN beer in there now - its a dramatic improvement!!
(iii) the menu - the food is cheap and the chips are REAL chips, lovely jubblee
Unfortuantely the toilets haven't changed tooo much - well we can't have it all eh!
Still its a lovely pub that has kept the low ceiling country feel and I am sure I will keep attending the Tuesday quiz! Long live the P & G!!

Hav'nt been to this place for yonks and got off at Wood Street to see if some old pals of mine still drank there. The place was closed down and looked derelict but a builder came out and told me that it was going to be a restaurant to rival every other place in Walthamstow! That won't be hard then!

He told me that they got to solve the rat problem though as it has been in a state of disrepair for ages and the old owner had thrown the towel in. Maybe they are gonna do Rattatouille as a speciality? I suggested this to the builder who did'nt get the joke, but to look at him, he seemed to have been the victim of failed lobotomy, the poor fellow! He even said that the bloke who says F****** on tele was going to open it. When I suggested Gordon Ramsey, he looked at me with another vacant stare and said 'Nah not that one!' Who else could it be I wondered?

Looks promising though as I saw they were putting pavent slabs on the floor to replace that stinking carpet that used to stick to the soles of your feet. I must pop in when it is open to have a look at the menu. You never know, this may be the start of Covent garden in Wood Street.

Larger inside than it looks from the outside and despite being fairly open plan, the low ceilings make it seem more intimate. Watching the TV in the corner is like sitting in your living room. Service was fine but no Ales (there were at least 5 redundant pumps). The locals were approachable and friendly enough although the vocabulary was at times a bit limited. Overall, nothing to write home about but I have been in a lot worse.
RogerB - 24 Jun 2006 08:58
Agree with the last 2 posters. The staff really should take a course in cleaning up. One thing i hate is sitting at a table with glasses and ashtrays piling up!! In the end my wife took the glasses and ashtray to the bar for them. This is a bit of regulars pub and sometimes you feel like you have walked into the pub in american werewolf in london!!!
anonymous - 30 Mar 2006 19:21
Cosy pub with good food. Pool table. I agree that the staff don't really clean up the place that often so you are sometimes left with the same glasses on your table for hours and also that sometimes they have more than 1 stereo/cd player playing at one time - plus the tv volume is up so you get a mish mash of noise! But you can take children here and there are toys for them to play with. Guys behind the bar are friendly, they have never been rude to me. Beer is not top notch though, could do with a slight revamp methinks.
anonymous - 20 Mar 2006 10:23
This pub is a complete dive. The staff are rude and arrogant since i was last there. Staff are lazy and don't bother collecting the glasses which are left to pile up along with the contents of the ashtray. Music is absolutely terrible and Disco and quiz nights what a complete joke they are. Food is ok but nothing to shout about (mainly prepacked food)
anonymous - 2 Sep 2005 06:20
Sometimes quiet friendly Local with excellent food ( Try Glenda,s all day breakfasts!!) regular quiz nights and Disco,s
The only down is the crap music on the pub C.D Player
