Had this Wetherspoon's on my list to visit on New Year's Eve. But as we were about to walk in, a group of young guys exited and told us it was closed and there had been a leak through the ceiling. One of them then proceeded to urinate on the corner. We left them to it and enjoyed a pleasant drink in Belle Isle just opposite. I expect Wetherspoon's lost a decent evening takings from this. We'll be back again to try it one day.

Good range to local micros which was good to see. We only had time for one but sadly the Dark Star American Pale Ale was a little tired. Interesting building, a converted hotel with lots of character and right beside the market cross in the centre, about 5 to 7 minutes walk of the railway station.

Its in town, busy, reasonably comfortable and serves well kept real ale, and I know, it's a Wetherspoons?!?

I sampled Dark Star Revelation, new to me. The menu has a good range of simple foods at low prices. Late afternoon and there are people of all age groups. Im in a window seat with a view of the Cathedral... quite pleasant.

I found the beer range here pretty good with at least 6 local micros on sale. busy on a Friday lunchtime.

very uninteresting spoons which is very dead for a Sunday afternoon mind the weather is vile, only one ale on other than the usual Greene king nonsense was weltons which was ok and only 1.99 pint,6/10

Nice building... But at the end of the day, it's still a Wetherspoons.

Being that this is the case, when purchasing food from one of these Giants, to double check your cutlery to make sure that all is clean and hygienic.

I've always found that Wetherspoons always lacks 'atmopshere', and rather than feel like a pub, feels more like a warehouse with seats.

Other than that. Service is good, food (like all Wetherspoons) is poor, and all is dark and dingy.

found it better than most spoons. was on ringwood old thumper which was excellent. sunday afternoon and was busy but soon got served. good position in chichester being across from the cathedral

A traditional-looking building from the outside, with no obvious corporate branding and a prime location directly opposite the cathedral. Inside, much as you would expect except that a lighter shade of wood has been used than in many other 'spoons and thus it has a lighter feel, particularly if you get a seat near the windows. Twelve handpumps, with a couple of duplicates and two "Available Soon" but a reasonable selection of local ales including a fine pint of Arundel Castle at a very reasonable 2.15.

Rather quiet for a Saturday night - and a bit cold. That said, service was great, prices very reasonable, and a great range of drinks - as Wetherspoons always do.
Does what it says on the tin.

highly recomended to anyone who is under 18 as most of the the people drinking there are

I don't live very close to Chichester but for various reason I go there about every couple of months and each time I make sure I visit this Wetherspoons. I have only been disappointed once when I had a rump steak that should have been recycled for a remould tyre - but that's the exception. Each visit has been worth the effort and minor glitches aside a visit is generally an enjoyable experience. Nice staff, excellent beers in good condition and routine very acceptable Wetherspoons food.

The dolphin and anchor is a tresure right next to yhe cathedral and and right in the center of town i was a little concerned when i read the reveiws but after going there the other day i must say that is a well run well kept pub the staff were friendly and verry polite the tabbles where clean and it was a peacfull enviroment the only down fall i saw was in the quew i waited my turn but every one wanted coffe and the staff need to turn to the back and so some rude old woman just stood next to me and told the yong man behind the counter she was next luckely he had seen me from befor so yes a great place but to meny coffe drinkers

Sticky tables packed very closely together. Not enough staff at lunch time? The food was fine and the service fairly efficient for saying it was very busy. A reasonable choice of well kept beer.

Always excellent beer and usually good bar service, but let down by how abysmally slow the staff are to clear tables. And I don't think I've ever seen them bother to wipe a table....

Popped in here today at lunchtime. It was busy but the staff were coping (although as ever with many JDW pubs, there wasnt exactly a surplus of staff, and tables werent being cleared promptly enough).

The W J Kings Winters TAle was a bit hazy but it tasted okay, and the microwave produced a fair to middling meal.

Pleased to see pump clips for 6 guest beers. Not so pleased that three of them were coming next week...stil, an above-average Spoons, very large but not too cavernous.
Uncle_Dunkel - 24 Jun 2007 23:43
Good range of cheap drinks from around the world. Unfortunately, still the hygiene issue! Dirty glasses with lipstick marks and a dodgy tummy after a visit.
Phmoo - 6 Jun 2007 15:36
Wetherspoons pub slowly getting better. Deuchars IPA was very good last time i was in there. But it is a spoons pub so bit like all the others. 5/10

Much improved since I went in there in the autumn though it was a wednesday afternoon rather than a saturday when we went before. The tables were cleaned and the barman knew who was next to be served. It does annoy me when people find a gap at the bar and think they should be served next. Nice meal and lovely german wheat beer which was cold.

new managers !!
theyve brought detergent & line cleaner, new glasswashers & staff, i look forward to improvments - (you hope they know what theyre in for sorting this place out) good luck!

A decent place to start in Chichester and take advantage of cheaper drinks as Phmoo points out. I was here Saturday night with my girlfriend and a couple of mates (22 July). For instance, we ordered 4 pints for under 8, which - given I am used to London prices for drinks - was great. I also like the location outside the cathedral and remember the bouncers being friendly. I would stress though that this is a decent STARTING point for a Friday/Saturday night out drinking in Chi. On first impressions, there are far livelier pubs/bars to drink in on a Friday/Saturday night (for example Lloyds) as the night builds up to a visit to Thursdays!!

Absolutely vile! the most unclean Establishment that i have ever had the bad luck to fall into. lets start at the beginning, the bar on our visit was filled to the brim with unwashed glasses. On ordering a pint it took three attempts of me returning my glass before i received one that was passably clean, just,i was told that the dishwasher had not been working properly for ages!.
The tables were indeed filthy, old crockery, empty glasses, sticky tacky tables throughout the pub.
And now on to the drink, as always good, Abbott great tasting and clean to the palette unlike the bar.
Its just a shame that that as in most of the wetherspoons that i have frequented the same picture always seems to be the normal, totally drained bar staff that are totally washed out, disinterested and look as though their clothes have been washed in the same dishwasher that refuses to clean the glasses correctly!.
Yes around 1.70 for Abbott, and 2.00 for fizzy Stella is remarkably cheap,if cheap rocks your boat then grab a few cans from the offi and sit on the seats outside the cathedral, even with the pigeons shitting on you, your less likely to come to any bacterial harm than if you Had of stayed in the Dolphin and Anchor.
clapham - 14 Apr 2006 20:13
Its a Wetherspoons, so it does exactly what it says on the tin! OK for a swift half and a bite but would want to spend a great deal of time in there.
thedazzla - 29 Mar 2006 21:30
No smoking, a rigid under 18's only policy, no music and 4 fruit machines.

DeanMachine - 4 Feb 2006 10:52
Now it's gone non-smoking throughout, it's cleaner than ever.
Incredibly cheap, less busy than before.
Food still nothing special, but with prices this low, it's a great cheap start to a longer evening!
Phmoo - 1 Sep 2005 16:46
Your typical Wetherspoons pub really, with half-decent food and a big spacious floor plan with clean facilities. Staff a bit on the slow and surly side though.
