Towards the lower end of the Wetherspoons scale. Just tries too hard to be Hipster /Craf which just doesn't suit the chain, especially somewhere like Woolwich. Pricing is okay for ales, lagers e.t.c. Often extremely busy even at times when you wouldn exdpect it to be a little quieter

Although there are now some really good places to eat and drink in Woolwich I still love it here for its great range of craft beers ales bottled beer and spirits, it is what it is but I still like a Sunday lunch time with the boys, and the foods always been decent whenever I've eaten there, sometimes pop in with Mrs after a night out, but usually only go in there with the chaps

RIP Percy, I'll miss our Sunday lunchtimes

Lively mixture of locals, great beer at best prices, went in Tuesday night after trying the new Antic pub across the square and it was buzzing, the new range of craft beers are tops, the new pub across the square is very nice and a good choice of beers but at £5.10 for a lovely pint of Brooklyn beer is even dearer than the Dial Arch so it's a no brainier

Great Wetherspoon value with a decent range of budget-priced food. Family friendly lunchtime and afternoons, but evenings vary from quiet to too noisy for this 60-something. A very mixed customer base – office workers and commuters plus locals attracted by the Wetherspoon's cheap prices.

Like many pubs, the standard of service varies. Many of the staff are excellent, delivering efficient service with a smile, but some of the newer recruits need to work harder to improve customer service skills, product knowledge and technical skills.

New management team has greatly improved the atmosphere, generally being quick to refuse and remove troublemakers, although some of the shift leaders / duty managers are not always quick enough to react.

Sadly some of the older locals could be described as "grumpy old men" who do not realise that the 21st century pub is very different from the "spit and sawdust" locals of their youth – different customers with different expectations and behaviours.

But one of only two pubs in Woolwich that we would choose for an evening of drinks and a bite to eat.

Came in here last night (Wednesday) for the 1st time, It's blinking awful.

Poor un-attentive staff, all very young.

Dirty tables

Not a great range of ales which is unlike 'spoons, they advertised a pint as being "gold" but it clearly wasn't as the color was more like a mild. When I asked the bar maid what it was she said it's beer! I then asked her to find out the name and brewery, off she goes, comes back 2 minutes later and walks straight past me. I challenge her and she says she doesn't know so I gave up. God knows what it was I drank!

I won't be coming back but I'm sure they won't notice.

the range of ales doesn't seem as good as pre fire, but it's good to have some choice again in Woolwich, and me and the father-in-law enjoyed our Sunday lunch time whiskeys, the Penderyn? (Welsh Malt) is excellent, been using the Queens up the road and I must admit i do miss the genuine local pub atmosphere but hay-ho you can't beat the range and value of the drinks, and as I've said before Sundays lunch is a good to visit as all the dossers are waiting for Monday to cash there Giro's
vinnnie - 30 Aug 2012 17:48
Welcome back. Had a great lunch in here last Sunday. Food was hot, fresh and served fast. Two very nice ales on when I was in there, the Nelsons Blood (6%) was very nice. Will pay another visit soon as I work just up the road.

came back from the west country Saturday to a Woolwich wrecked, I know it's not the greatest place in the world, but was always good on Sunday lunch time, morons and scumbags sounds about right ,terrorist arsonists in my opinion
vinnnie - 16 Aug 2011 16:48
Even though I hated this pub, it's terrible that the retard morons raized the place, putting people out work and risking lives.
flashharry1965 - 9 Aug 2011 16:21
Now a burned out ruin thanks to scumbag "rioters" on 8 Aug 2011.
Trinker - 9 Aug 2011 15:51
still tops for a Sunday lunch time bevy
vinnnie - 27 Jun 2011 12:46
The usual really but at this spoons just like the one in Dartford you get a slightly menacing crowd clustered round the bar ordering standard beers and ales, I got a funny look when I asked for soda water and lime juice, thank god they didn't hear me asking for a Spritzer wine and soda water. Cheap and ok but never trendy.

A typical Spoons pub, the Great Harry is a bright, open establisment next to the busy Woolwich town Centre. Yesterday it was ful of football supporters watching the World Cup on huge screens. I got intol thes spirit by having a pint of Marstons Fever Pitch, one of the 8 ales on offer. It was normal for JDW - too cold, but drinkable. I would probably go back next time I'm waiting for a train, but I can't say I'd go out of my way to come here
ETA - 26 Jun 2010 09:05
I've had some really top notch ales in here over the past months, I only really come in here Sunday lunch times when it's not too busy and the more unsavory punters you normally get in here are all absent, as I've said I've had some really good ales they've allways been in good nic and Sunday afternoons seems like a really good time to visit
vinnnie - 29 Mar 2010 12:12
Came in here on New years eve before i went somewhere more interesting to spend my new years. popped in there was two ladies working the floor. they wasn't exactly wearing typical wetherspoon uniform. one had 2-3 inches heels and the other had boots with a low cut top on. more suitable for other places . the atmosphere was like the moon. service quick unsurprisingly as there was more staff than customers. good selection ales and good service however not the place i would like to be after midnight... would come again as ales and staff are good, not the best but in woolwich this pub is certainly the one of choice.
LONDONASBO - 4 Jan 2010 00:42
I came in here Saturday morning for a breakfast after a big night out and I was well impressed, it's the first time i've eaten here, i've always thought how good the food looks on a sunday when I'm in for my lunch time bevvie, and the brekkie I had was top notch, I've also had some really good guest ales on my Sunday lunch visits the Rosey Nosey was really good as was the Abbott reserve but at 6.5% i just had the one, I've grown to really like this place, if you go in when it's not to busy I find the service really good, and when they get it right you can't beat spoons for the variety quality and price of the food and especially the ales
vinnnie - 14 Dec 2009 09:46
Been here on a few Fridays after work and lived to tell the tale.

Usual 'spoons mix of cheap and decent ale and a whole host of lager, shots and alcopops catering for a very mixed crowd.

It's not pretty, the service is not great, there is an undercurrent of impending doom.

But the ale is cheap. Worth a risk.
nickrocks74 - 7 Dec 2009 16:09
spot on Roger, Sunday lunch time is a safe bet, and i've got a feeling they put the guest ales on in the morning as I've recently had some really good ones that are very fresh, I never go in here at any other time as when I have it allways feels like a tinder box ready to explode
vinnnie - 28 Oct 2009 12:41
Not a great advert for Wetherspoons or Woolwich. A modern glass fronted building named after Henry VIIIs flagship that was built a short stagger away in Woolwich Dockyard. The bland interior has very little aesthetic value even by Spoons normal formulaic standards and the customer base at peak times leaves very little to be desired. The number of guest ales various on my most recent visit there was just 1 guest ale and a host of Available Soon labels although for some inexplicable reason we returned a couple of hours later (no, I dont know why either) and found 3 on so Ill give them the benefit of the doubt on that one. Very much a Spoons to be used in desperation although in Woolwich you may just find yourself using it more than you would like to.
RogerB - 23 Oct 2009 15:58
GOOD food GOOD drink GOOD service however the manager could cheer up a bit and it lacks ATMOSPHERE not the best wetherspoon but not the worst.
LONDONASBO - 5 Oct 2009 13:45
seems normal service has been resumed, I forwarded my previous review to spoons customer service and got a quick response from one of thier managers, and the beers seem to be bang on form again on my last two suday lunch time excursions
vinnnie - 18 Aug 2009 13:49
i'm usually quite complimentary about "the harry" despite it's drawbacks, as in all the time I've used it I've always had a decent pint, well the last two Sundays I've been in the beer seems have been badly neglected, the first week I had to back a pint of Abbott that was off, and yesterday I tried the Abbott which was just about drinkable, so I switched to Pedegree which was even worse, I then had the Ruddles which was spot on, it seems to me that with the Ruddles at 1 50 that seems to be the only beer really moving while the others are left to go off, this is a worry as i've been coming in for years with no probs and now two weeks in a row I've had well below standard ales
vinnnie - 20 Jul 2009 13:32
as i've said before, I only come in here Sundays where it seems you get a more civilised clientel than at other times during the week, my wife walked passed the the other day in the week and said thier were all sorts of low lifes spilling on to the pavement{window lickers as some one put it) and that she felt quite intimidated just walking past, I can only comment on what I see on a Sunday lunch time when it seems the undesirables are all at home licking there windows
vinnnie - 26 Jun 2009 12:28
Most entertaining establishment. Characters from all walks of life. Never a dull moment. Cask Beer usually good, will agree with the "SLOW" staff and in some cases, non existent until closing, when you can guarantee a serious lot verbal and bell clanging to get you out. Food is normally OK, when you eventually get it. Door control on a Friday and Saturday night, which can lead to some interesting confrontations, a worthy spectators sport from a distance. Worth using as a late venue, as it has a good crowd of friendly locals who seem to turn up around 22:30.
CaskMaster - 18 Jun 2009 02:02
it's fair to say you didn't like this pub then Harry, I know it gets it's fair share of dross , but to tar them all with the same brush is a bit unfair, as I've said before i mainly use this place on a Sunday and have never seen any trouble, i was here with my father-in-law yesterday and there was a diverse mix of punters, ranging from the usual sort youd expect to see in there to families having there lunch to general Sunday lunch timers enjoying a desent pint
vinnnie - 1 Jun 2009 12:18
A shocking example of a 'Spoons.
The beer is more than decent when you eventually get served by the extremly slow staff, but the punters! A complete shower of alkies and window-lickers, chavs and thugs - and I used to live in Woolwich so I'm no snob

As spoons go this one is not one of the worst. Excellent guest beer and a very well cooked mixed grill. OK it has the usual cosmopolitan range of punters but that goes with the territory - if you're a snob then go to a wine bar instead. Was there on a tuesday with footie on the telly. Yes it was lively but never oppressive and wouldn't shy away from visiting again. As with all spoons you get what you pay for.
twineyboy - 9 Apr 2009 23:25
still my Sunday lunch time haunt as it's the only place within walking distance with a good choice of ales, it's never so busy you cant get served at that time, and the ale (I usualy have Abbott ) is always good, i gave the Elgoods Thin Ice a go after a pint of Abbott and both were spot on, i'm actually begining to warm to the place, I'm going to give it a 7/10 as i've been coming in here for over 5 years and never had a bad pint, and it's the only place in central Woolwich with a choice of ales, and Roses is a bit to far to stagger back from a Sunday lunch time tipple
vinnnie - 13 Jan 2009 12:28
havn't eaten here but the sunday roast look nice, and the ales are allways good,i only really use this place on a sunday and it's never packed out,so you don't get the usual hassle trying to get served,it just dosn't feel very pub like
vinnnie - 19 Sep 2008 13:34
been in here for the last couple of Sundays, and although this place seems to lack any atmosphere, had a couple of nice ales that tasted ok,got served reasonably quickly, and it wasn't so packed that you couldn't get a seat,as i said it's not the greatest pub in the world, they could certainly do with cleaning the tables a bit quicker, and it seems to have retained the atmosphere of the wallpaper shop that it once was,but all in all there are worse places you could go in woolwich for a bevvie
vinnnie - 27 May 2008 13:11
havn't been in here for a while, but passed by the other day and noticed there seemed to be a lot af families and middle aged respectable looking types eating and drinking, but juding by the last comment posted this may not allways be the case,
vinnnie - 25 Feb 2008 13:03
Went in there with my wife and daughter. Left after one drink because my wife and daughter felt uneasy with the people in there.
paulbeckett - 22 Feb 2008 20:27
a complete dive. staff are useless. clientel mostly scum or alkies as its cheaper to drink here than buy meths.
badger13 - 18 Oct 2007 13:39
the service in here is rubbish, although at times you could not blame the bar staff, as for most of the clientel who frequent the place the nicest thing you could say about them is yuk
jimtazz - 4 Jul 2007 21:27
This place is usually packed but both the beer and the staff are consistently crap. Then again, I probably would be too if I had to work with those punters.
bonecase - 25 Feb 2007 11:22
popped in for a couple yesterday lunch time(sunday)service seems to have got a lot better here lately, great real ale, but seems to lack atmosphere,it used to be a wall paper shop, and appears to have kept the feel
vinnnie - 22 Jan 2007 12:45
I stopped using this pub a couple of years ago despite the good rael ale at good prices this didn't detract from the awful service, surly bar staff, and nearly geting into a fight every time I went in,I tried it again just recently and found it quite improved, but this might have been more to do with the fact that it was a Sunday afternoon(about one oclock)and not so busy, worth a walk to the Rose if you want a better vibe
vinnnie - 8 Jan 2007 14:05
Another town, another Spoons. I paid a visit to this, the Woolwich branch of the popular chain yesterday (6th Nov) and found it to be quite okay. It was of course full of the usual alcoholics and work shy, just as all the others are during the day, but the place seemed to be friendly enough and well managed too. Im not too familiar with other pubs in the area, so would probably pay another visit if ever here again. Recommended.
HTM69 - 7 Nov 2006 18:07
Used to visit this pub as our regular because the prices were... well... Wetherspoons prices, which helped my already imploding wallet.
As we settled into the area and continued our unfortunate loyalty to this place we became somewhat depressed by our choice of local.
We no longer pleasure them with our coins as we felt that every time we visited that the place was on the knife edge of a serious rumble.
The customers further added to their distinct lack of interest of being on anyones Christmas Card List by being rude and invasive. The less attractive local flavour seemed to soak through more than the decent folk.
Shame, it would be a great place otherwise. Plus, if they got some new staff in that remembered the human thing we call smiling then that would help take our minds off the impending doom surrounding us.
anonymous - 31 Aug 2006 14:23
I have to agree with the last posting. I've not been in this place since last year but my friend visited on 18/03 and he got threatened. The staff, forget them, as long as you're putting money in the till they don't care. I also think that a lot of the problems in this pub have been caused by the arrival of the DLR as they've demolished the Pullman, the pub all the local dross visited, to make way for a ticket office. Guess where they go now ?
M.Sticker - 27 Mar 2006 18:15
Never really like this pub despite the great range of beers and lagers. Can't wait for the the DLR to arrive. Perhaps when it does it will improve.
paulbeckett - 10 Feb 2006 08:12
Hard to believe that a Wetherspoons is probably the most modern pub in Woolwich. It's not great but that's due to the customers a lot of the time. It has an immense range of drinks from around the world, so many beers & lagers & ciders, whatever your preference they seem to have it. Good, cheap food as you would expect with a Wetherspoons and plenty of seating. It's a breath of fresh air in dirty, grimey Woolwich, we need more places like this but hopefully not just more chain bars. The DLR is coming, hurry up, what more incentive do you need!?
RandomJoe - 9 Nov 2005 13:40
A standard 'Spoons outlet with nothing to make it stand out. I was told that within 6 months of this pub opening (05/2000) it had gone to the top of the local police's "trouble pubs" list. The no smoking area offers some refuge from the oiks getting tanked up before visiting the local club/2AM pubs.
M.Sticker - 15 Jun 2005 15:58

got anything to say about this pub?
