Horrible smelling pub, staff look like they would rather spit at you than serve you a drink (that's over priced), the landlady looks like something out of a sketch show and as far as i can tell this is where you end up when you've been thrown out of everywhere else.

Slow service from barstaff who think that texting their mates is more important than their job, truly awful loos, over-priced drinks (poorly poured), a good chance of a free punch with every pint, Wayne & Waynetta having a full-on domestic row, screaming brats in the 'beer garden' during the summer - all in all precisely what you would expect from a Colchester town centre pub...

Extremely unfriendly bar staff, very expensive drinks, disgusting toilets. Avoid like the plague.

I recently visited The Castle and found it to be an exceptionally well run establishment. The landord and landlady were friendly and inviting and struck up conversation with patrons, The barstaff were really quick on service and full of friendly banter. Food is generous in portions and very good in quality and presentation, It is traditional 'pub food' and Sunday roast fare rather then the 'up market gastro pub food'. There was an excellent selection of drinks and I settled on one of the real ales they offer, which couldn't be falted. Toliets were clean, soap dispensers full and plenty of toilet roll. There was a seperate function room of a very good standard thou this wasnt in use at the time I visited. Plenty of comfortable seating inside and out, Sofas as well as the more typical wooden chairs. There was a TV showing sports channels but at a volume where it didnt disturb people not wanting to watch this, A couple of fruit machines. Smoking area/outdoor patio with ample seating.
No doorstaff, but when a few young lads did start a bit of bother in the beer garden towards closing time, the landlord and landlady were straight on it, taking drinks away from those that were beginning to kick off and escorting them from the premises, It was clear that whilst friendly banter and lively revellers are welcome, that any nonsense or agressive is swiftly dealt with.
Will definately go back and encourage others to visit.

Enjoyed this pub alot ,Real beers well kept.Although quite a large pub it seems very warm and cosy ,maybe the big settees help.
The food is the best part ,its English pub food at its very best.

Lovely pub especially in summer, devoid of all the usual town snobbiness on a Friday/Saturday evening, very nice change, food in daytime is lovely especially the baguettes, all reasonably priced and cooked well, drink prices are reasonable, lots of students though which is sadly unavoidable in these style pubs nowadays, no main complaint on students as such other than most of them talk SO loudly! Oh and just remembered that the mirror on the way into the ladies toilets is like the ones from the fairgrounds, makes you look a very weird shape!

Well worth a visit if you're on Colchester high street. The two real ales on offer are always well kept. The food is of reasonable qulaity and not too expensive. The outside beer garden is very popular in summer, in fact on a warm day there are usually moer people sat outsdie then in the pub.

Pretty good little pub, fairly good atmosphere, great beer garden that opens onto the street. Has a new bar in a continental sytle greenhouse-type-thing, which is nice in the summer. Drinks are average price and selection is okay. Food is pretty honest. Staff are quite nice (and they even put a cloverleaf in your Guinness!)

Have to agree this is a nice place, new patio bar improved things alot.Chilled, and relaxed.Nice!

well i work there... and also agree that in the three years i have been here have never seen it to be a squaddie dive.. we get work groups in at lunch and after the office is closed.. and have familys in for lunch and for the sport at the weekend.. we do like bad language as is found offensive and as for skanks?? well i find this quite rude.. with the new patio bar also we have introduced a new relaxed atmosphere playing jazz music for those who wish to listen to something a little more different.. carmen lucas i have never met .. hope to one day to ask them more of their opinion which is totally wrong
ferne - 11 Apr 2004 02:25
It's my works local. The food is great and cheap at the same time. c lucas must be thinking of the wrong place as i've never seen a squaddie in there!!!
archie - 29 Jan 2004 11:44
You find all the skanks here. This is NOT a classy place. This is a squaddie dive. Not my kind of thing!!!
