The Angel Inn, Long Ashton

Good choice of beers and cider. The food is okay, but nothing to rave about. Staff were not unwelcoming, but they weren't particularly friendly, either. Clientele when we were there was local, retirement age, and seemed to like to keep to themselves. The pub is of some historic interest, but I did not feel comfortable or welcome enough to take the time to have a good look around.

The Miners Rest, Long Ashton

Paid a return visit to the Miner's Rest and was a bit disappointed. Let me set out the positive things first. To me, the main plus about this pub is its character. It is a true original and must be visited at least once. From the dart board, the beat-up piano in the corner, to the miners' lanterns on the walls, this place feels like a walk a few steps back in time. Magic. The second plus is the drink. They serve some excellent brews. Third, the staff are great people -- friendly. On the negative side, current construction work next door wrecks the atmosphere a bit. There used to be a great place to sit outdoors in their apple orchard, but that's all been fenced off with wire so the amazing views are gone. Shame about that, but it won't make much difference once winter sets in. Finally, if you are not familiar to the old codgers who spend a lot of time in this pub, be prepared for a bit of taunting or a cold shoulder from them if you are foreign or not white. I have received jeers and comments every time I've visited this pub. It can feel a little less than comfortable, so be warned and arm yourself with a sense of humour and a passion for experiencing life in all its weird and wonderful manifestations. Remember, it's still worth a visit. Either the old codgers will get used to me, I'll develop a thick skin, or I'll just end up going somewhere else.

The Bird in Hand, Long Ashton

Fine family pub with super food and great neighbourhood feel to it. Staff are genuinely friendly and welcoming to one and all and the place has a relaxed and pleasant comfy atmosphere. Easily the best pub for food in Long Ashton, too. Hats off to the chef! The choice of beers on tap and ciders is also excellent. Conveniently located in the middle of Long Ashton on the main road. Definitely worth many a return visit!
