The Uxbridge Arms, Notting Hill

Classic pub. Beer scrupulously kept and served, never stale, always the right temperature (London Pride, Harvey's, Tribute). A family atmosphere predominates, customers mostly regulars. The decor recently done up with taste. Often full, never rowdy. The sympathetic land-lady really keeps a proper eye on everything, from beer to hygiene. Pints are served full measure plus!

The Castle, Holland Park

Has a changing selection of excellent beers, every visit an agreeable surprise. Staff courteous and efficient, premises disordered but clean (especially toilets). Decor could be improved, and sometimes there's too much din from the music, which makes conversation difficult. One puts up with that for the beer, which is what we're really after. In August: Doombar, Northern Star, but especially the pure magic of Whispa. The pub has spirit - a lot of young clients, sometimes exuberant but never unruly.
