Dukes, Sidmouth

Dukes is a bit of an enigma. It is a well presented pub that is always clean and tidy. The staff are always well turned out and they remember to smile. It has a great position on the sea front and that's about it.

The things that it can't seem to get right are pretty important. The beer is not looked after as well as it should be, the food is consistently OK to not very good. The staff whilst trying to please don't seem very educated about the products that they are serving whether that be food or drink.

As a result every time I visit Dukes I am always left with the feeling of being appeased, and paying for the privilege rather than being welcomed and warmed.

The overall effect is sterile and characterless, but it has a great position in town and so will always do well, with passing trade. Such a disappointment, with a little more love it could be a great and loved pub.

But it's not.

Old Ship Inn, Sidmouth

I am extremely sorry to say that this lovely old pub, which has always had a wonderful atmosphere, has been sold and will shortly be reopened as a Costa Coffee.

R.I.P. The Old Ship Inn. You will be sorely missed.

The Cannon Inn, Newton Poppleford

A fairly run down pub, but the restaurant area retains some charm and the food is very good.

However the bar area next door is "duelling banjos" with silver backs at the bar. Avoid.
