Forresters Arms, York

This pub won York CAMRA's country pub of the season last year, WHY??? I've tried this pub three times and I have to say it has been disappointing. The service is poor, if your not a local your left waiting until the staff have finished gossiping with the locals. There where two ale's (John Smith cask and Hambleton) and two lagers, the beer was good but it should be at just under 3 a pint. On one visit we had a meal, it was Okish. One thing I found most annoying, the restaurant has waitress service, but you have to order your food at the bar. If you don't know this your left sitting at a table waiting (and waiting and waiting) for someone to take your order, there's no sign and the staff can't be bothered to tell you. You may ask why I went three times, I would not write a bad review on one visit, it would not be fair (any pub can have a bad day). I will not waste my time or money on this pub again.

The Guy Fawkes Hotel, York

Ive been in a few times and its very nice. It has a good selection of well kept rotating real ales and four larger fonts, all continental. Its defiantly aimed at the tourist, with its gas lighting, open log (real) fire and period furniture/dcor (a little ott perhaps?). The staff are very friendly and helpful, the beer prices are about average for the city centre and it does have a pleasant atmosphere. They do food, but I havent had a meal yet! Theres no music, TVs or gaming machines, hurray!!! I recommend a visit. To pick up on a previous comment, when Ive been in (Sat/Fri evenings) it hasnt been given over to dinners, it was defiantly a drinkers pub, it may depend on time of day?

The Walnut Tree, Heworth

I have visited The Walnut Tree a couple of times now and had a meal on my last visit. It is an excellent pub, the place is spotlessly clean and well decorated, and the staff are friendly and welcoming. There were three ales (John Smith, Blacksheep and Batemans) and various lagers been served. My wife assures me that the wine was good and I can assure you that the beer was excellent. Drinks prices were average for York. The food is superb and very reasonably priced (you would need to book a table for Friday / Saturday evenings). There is a big enclosed garden with slide and swings for the children. And there is a large car park. They are open to midnight on Friday and Saturdays, although they stop serving dead on 11.30 and you must be out by 12. This is an excellent pub and I highly recommend a visit, enjoy!
