The Wig & Pen, Colchester

I actually quite like this pub (The Duchess). It's on the high street so handy for lunch and a quick beer (to be honest it serves Rekorderlig on tap, so I usually have a couple of them, sorry).

The beer selection is fine, the food is decent (if not stunning), but mostly the customers cover a wide age range so that everyone feels comfortable (I tend to go in there during the day, occasionally on a Saturday the evening before 10PM).

The pub used to be much busier and noisier years ago, but seems much quieter now. The odd stag/hen do passes through, but for a town centre pub it feels quite relaxed.

The Albert, Colchester

Standard Beefeater/Premier Inn combination. The bar is a little small, but it does have a beer garden (although it is pretty nondescript).

Staff in the bar are usually friendly.

Makes an OK stop off, especially pre/post meal. There are better pubs in town, but there's nothing "wrong" with this one.

Beer quality is as you'd expect really.
