The Bridge House Tavern, Penge

AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!
Thought this would be a nice place, especially as this is owned by the people that have The Rye in peckham (which may i add had seriously gone downhill) and the mansion in gipsy hill (which has so much improved since the new owners took it over)
A group of us went a few Sundays ago for lunch. Apart from having to take out a second mortgage, we all came home with food poisoning and were violently ill for the next week (had nothing to doo with beer - 2 of us were on soft drinks).
Had such a long wait for the food to arrive (nearly an hour) and even then it was sent back cos it was cold in the middle. Had to wait for it to come back out (think they zapped it in the microwave) and was just about edible. Certainly wished we'd just walked out (would have saved a fortune on immodium!). Perhaps this place should be reported to Environmental Health.

Was ignored at the bar for what seemed like an eternity, until the staff were finally bothered to stop chatting and serve.

All in all, we won't be going back and would urge others to think carefully before going in there. You could seriously risk your health (not to mention the extortionate prices and the impact on your wallet).

It just seems like the owners want to grab your cash and couldn't care less about the consequences when you complain.

My recommendation? Find somewhere else, anywhere. This place is not worth risking your health for.

The Rye Pub, Dining Room and Garden, Peckham Rye

Dear shadowofthebeast

Did i say i was a policeman? No. I said i worked for the police force. There is a difference you sad tw*t. Would also be interesting to know what YOU do for a living.
I was at the now seemingly infamous "Poogate Quiz" and it really wasn't as bad as you make out. Perhaps the quizmaster shouldn't have said anything, but then perhaps whoever caused that remark shouldn't have done what they did either. Its not very pleasant having to put up with certain unpleasant aromas while you are trying to eat your dinner (it wasn't you was it... and that's why you're causing such a scene?)
With regards to swearing - do you not swear? Or are you someone with the mental capacity of a five year old who goes running to mummy every five minutes. Grow up. You obviously don't like the quiz or the quizmaster, so don't bother coming again and spoiling it for those of us who do like the quiz and the quizmaster.
And with regards to me being easily pleased - maybe i am. I see the quiz for what it is. A fun night out. You are obviously hard to please. Perhaps you should take up the quizmasters' weekly offer to write and host your own quiz one week and see how well you do and how well you are supported. If not, get your head out of your backside, and take a long walk off a short pier

The Rye Pub, Dining Room and Garden, Peckham Rye

I too would like to respond to anonymous' comments about the quiz. My friend and I have been going for several months now and have always had a wonderful time. It must be a good night because every table is always taken, so the formula must work. There have been times when we have been unable to get a table, because it has been so busy, so instead we have huddled in a corner or played at the bar.
It does seem like sour grapes on behalf of Anonymous. Did you not win the quiz? May i suggest that:
a) if you are going to make disparaging remarks, you at least have the courage to identify yourself
b) get your head out of your backside
c) get a life
The size of the pot does depend on how many people are playing. With a pot over 100 means that more than 50 people were playing that night. Are all those people wrong?
In response to the remark about the host allowing his friends to win. This is absolutely outrageous. My team have won on a few occasions, sometimes we have done really badly. Every time we have been there has been a different winner each week. Yes, sometimes there have been teams that have won more than once. Isn't that normal with pub quizzes, especially if they are regulars? Comments like that, accusing the host of cheating are downright slanderous and damaging. The host is always friendly and helpful, especially to teams who aren't faring too well and always comes round in the breaks to offer a few extra clues to assist them. I don't know of any other quiz host who does that. He always makes us feel very welcome.
I can see you point (only just though) about the bottle of wine for 2nd place. It does seem a bit mean, but at the end of the day, they are running a business, and have to make money. What is nice about the Rye quiz is that they also do a free raffle. No other quiz that i know of offers that, so in that respect they are quit generous.
I cannot agree with the comment about the host not being funny. Ok sometimes its a bit rude and risque, but that's why we love it. After all, we are all adults. What do you expect for 2? A professional comedian? Or have you had a sense of humour bypass?
The bottom line is that you just can't seem to please all of the people all of the time. If you don't like it, the solution is simple: don't come again. There are plenty of people who love the quiz and come back week after week after week.
As for the type of people who go to the Rye quiz, none of my team are "media tw*ts" as you so eloquently put it. I work for the police, two of my team are teachers, and another is a solicitor.
We come from various parts of south london just for the quiz (one of us even comes in from Islington). Its a far better quiz than any other quiz we have taken part in.
The quiz is supposed to be fun and if you win, that's a nice bonus.
Of course the more you go the more banter you will have with the host. That's only natural when both parties get to know eachother. Don't you think it would be rude of the host not to acknowledge you?
You obviously didn't like the pub, because you also slated the food. Don't just slag it off just because. Have some constructive criticism. Or are you just a professional moaner?
