The Trout Inn, Wolvercote

Superb location with huge riverside drinking and eating areas. The peacock strutting around is tremendous. Foodie but you are not made to feel unwelcome as a drinker. Poor choice of beer (Brakspear or Doom Bar-what about a local micro or two guys?) Interior is, well beige.

The Canalside Cafe, Birmingham

Charming location and good value, basic food but, maybe I'm unlucky but have been here many times over recent years and have yet to have a good pint. Mediocre at best, not enlivened by sometimes surly service. Shame.

The Lord Palmerston, Carshalton

Unspoilt country style two-bar pub with 1920s-type wood panelling. Friendly on a Wednesday afternoon visit, three ales including very good Harveys Sussex. The only downside was the blaring Heart FM in the public bar.
