The Cross Guns, Avoncliff

Despite being local I havent been back here for probably about 5 years but thought would give it another try - great location and good beer but owner was never overly interested unless you were buying food.

At least the tannoy has now gone but the terraces are still covered in large banners promting cr@p lager that are more in place in a chain pub at happy hour. Good selection of beers from Box Steam brewery which the landlord also owns and lots of leaflets promoting a lovely walk to the Inn at Freshford which he also owns - who says the pub trade is struggling.

five years on, the landlord is still trying to break into a smile (unsuccessfully) but I guess with such a cash cow he can pretty much do as he pleases and still rake it in from the tourists who flock here in droves

see you in 5 years

The Hungerford Arms, Farleigh Hungerford

Good news - it has reopened as of July 2009. dropped by at the weekend and they were doing really well with overspill from the Pump festival. New owners seem really enthusiastic and the menu looked really good. We tried the homemade pork pie ploughmans and fair play it was all home made, even down to the chutney and it was fantastic tasting too plus great value. Its great to see pubs opening rather than closing, something all too common these days and I will be back over the next week or so to see how they have settled in. The pub has loads of parking; two lovely terraces with views over Iford valley to the manor house plus a good selection of drinks and proper homemade food.
