The Woolpack, London Bridge

A short stagger from London Bridge, The Woolpack nestles unassumingly in a villagey stretch of Bermondsey St amidst likeable independent shops. The decor is a fine compromise between trad pub and nouveau wine lounge, and, in my opinion, manages to teeter just on the right side of both. Staff are cheery and attentive, replacing ashtrays with an almost religious zeal; and the food is excellent value for the quality. I'd recommend the scandi outhouse extension which offers a cosy respite from the hubbub of the main bar- which, by the way, is patronised by some rather attractive locals.

The Town of Ramsgate, Wapping

By far the best, although not the cheapest, pub on the riverside in Wapping. It has a real local feel, not chainy like the Captain Kidd, or over done and touristy like the Prospect of Whitby. I can heartily recommend the pub quiz on a Monday night; look out for the snowball round and the free popcorn, although the locals provide some very tough opposition.

The Prospect of Whitby, Wapping

My appetite whetted by the historical calibre of this establishment, I went in on a quiet wednesday. The service is terrible, despite the over attentive new manager, and I was short changed by a tenner. However, the food is of a good standard and when it finally arrived, the sausage and mash was excellent.
