The Hare, Bristol

The Hare opened a couple of years ago, and since then has expanded already, such is its popularity with the crowd who inhabit what was once termed the 'tumbleweed end of North Street'. Despite its popularity with the hipster brigade, which might put off a more traditional beer drinker, it actually is a very good pub with a selection of about five ales on hand pump, plus the obligatory trendy keg offerings from the likes of Camden Brewery. Regulars on their menu are beers from local brewers such as Ashley Down and Wiper and True, but more traditional ales are also often an option. The selection does tend to the hoppy, American-inspired brews, but I've usually managed to find a session pale ale or similar to sup of an evening. They have nights regularly (such as first Wednesday of the month, but I can't remember) where either North American or low countries beers are celebrated.

In terms of atmosphere, it was a relatively small pub with a cramped front area which is elevated from the the street, a cosy corridor by the bar and a broader back area. However, the recent encroachment into next door has probably doubled the seating area indoors. I don't know how much of the interior is original, but the styling is pretty traditional (with 19th-century textured wallpaper and dark-painted panelling) and certainly neither too 'retro' nor too clinical (and there isn't any exposed brickwork). It gets busy on a Friday evening, so seats can be hard to come by at the same time as there isn't much of a standing area. However, those who find room are rewarded with a comfy, well-kept pint. Well worth a visit.
