The Colney Fox, St Albans

We were looking for somewhere to take a relative for a meal. This place seemed ideal as far as looks and location go. We popped in for a drink to check. There were no bar seats left, but it was a busy time. My wife's drink was served in a dirty glass, it was replaced by another, slightly less dirty, and no apology. The barman refused to top up my beer which looked low, and proved to be when I sat down. He was berating a member of staff about shifts, and then started to go into a sneezing fit over the customers at the bar. Next!

The Three Horseshoes, Bourne End

Nice location. What puts me off is the bar staff. Like they really don't want to be there. It's only a small thing, but I'd rather not have my expensive beer served by a sullen faced barman who keeps calling you "pal", or a young girl who hides away and greats you with "yeah?".

The Bricklayers Arms, Flaunden

We've been going here for meals for a few years. I do note some changes, probably due to the recession. Food is still good, if a little blander, but portions are much smaller and the meals more expensive. 18.95 for my two tiny pieces of duck and mashed potato; 13.95 for my wife's risotto (the only vegetarian option) - hey, it's just a small portion of rice with a few strips of veg! Three or four years ago, I remember taking my Dad for lunch, and three main courses, puddings and drinks were fifty odd quid. The two of us paid over sixty quid for two main courses, one pudding and a couple of
bar drinks each. Still a nice pub restaurant, with good service, and very popular with the elderly in the early evening.
