The Earl of Derby, Cambridge

Not at all a bad pub. Ideal place for lunch for those attending O.U. tutorials at Hills Road. Good range of food and beer. Staff friendly and laid back. Nice little courtyard for the summer. Much better than the bars/restaurants around the corner by the cinema complex

The Fountain, Ely

Amen to Spetswalshe's and Tierney's comments. I would add that the Fountain can often have the air of a private member's club rather than a pub, and that the landlord's photographs of the first Gulf War might not be to everyone's taste, even if the beer is.

The Lord Nelson, Southwold

Pretty near perfect. A proper pub, but family friendly. Pleasing on the eye from outside, warm and woody inside. Friendly bar staff and a landlord who actually remembers faces. The welcome appears to be the same for visitors as Southwoldians. Beer, as would be expected, is first rate. Food is simple but fine (particularly the fish and chips). Its pure pleasure to stagger through the normally heaving bar and share a table out in the courtyard. Its the sort of place where strangers actually talk to each other - which isn't a bad thing.
