The Elm, West Kensington

We were not sure what to make of 'The Elm' on our recent visit. Remarkably unpretentious and a lot tidier on the inside than it looks on the outer, complete with trophies and 'News of the World' Pontoon league. We put the year at about 1978, yet the prices were surprisingly up to date.

The clientele seemed like they virtually lived in the place and the sight of necomers seemed to make everyone stand to attention. This may be the kind of pub that a few visits gets you admitted in to the 'inner circle' but whether this ageing bunch of Cheesman's Terrace/Desborough House council estate dwellers is worth getting to know we'll see.

A few more visits needed and an assessment (up or down) in a few weeks perhaps.
