The Railway, West Hampstead

The criticism of this place is somewhat true: the clientelle can be a bit rough, however I find the staff to be quite good. Unlike most bars in London, the barstaff are constantly running around behind the bar, so that in busy times the wait is never too long. The table service is fast and efficient (even when busy) and the food is acceptable (not great, but not crap either).

The beers are OK and well-priced for the area.

Overall, the Railway is your typical average pub: a good place for a quiet drink with friends. It doesnt have the class of the Gallery around the corner, but also lacks the pretentious clientelle.

The Black Lion, West Hampstead

A little rough around the edges, but better than it looks from the front. It used to be a bit of an "old mans" pub, but has improved over the last year to include all types.

The pub's best asset is its beer garden and the fact it has Sky. The beers are OK and the food is acceptable. An average bar, but livable.
