The Plough Inn, Warmington

We were looking for a quiet lunch spot with a log fire. We have been under a bit of pressure and wanted to unwind and chat.

The Plough was quite busy when we entered at 12.30 but we got a warm welcome and the fire was alight even if enclosed in a log burning stove. Queen sang out "Don't stop me" quietly from the overhead Muzak speakers but at a volume that meant that you could listen but also talk over it. There was a hum of conversation from a group of six local men in the corner who obviously met for lunch and to put the world right. We sat by the fire, warmed to the atmosphere and ordered a light lunch. I was tempted by the game pie. A smallish portion but adequate and quite definitely home baked and tasty. The home made pâté and baguette that my wife ate was well prepared and obviously home made. My pint of Moreland Golden Hen (by Greene King) was in good nick and the barman allowed me to sample before buying which is a good sign.

We said that we would certainly return.

Joes Bar and Restaurant, Hampton Hill

This isn;t realy a 'beer in the evening' pub. We booked it for a family celebration on a Saturday lunchtime and the Staff prepared a menu for us and catered splendildly for us. Everybody had a reasonable choice and there was stuff for the little children too.

The wines were chosen by the house and were good and reasonable. The Cava for a toast after sweet was as good as any champagne I have tasted at less than a third of the cost!

We were unhurried and had a lovely time.

The John O'Gaunt Inn, Sutton

We travelled for nearly two hours to get to this pub to meet friends who travelled an equal distance.

It was worth the effort. The food was freshly cooked, very good value and the beer wonderfully kept. We sampled Fuller's London Pride, Timothy Taylor's landlord and Woodfordes Wherry. It was all wherry nice! They even had a limited edition J2O for the drivers. The Landlord was hospitable, knowledgeable and conversational about folk music and artists of our era (last 40 years) and served us coffee well after his normal closing time. Thank you.

The village is pretty and has an interesting stream with a ford and stone footbridge in the 'High Street'
