Profile information

Originally from Glasgow, I now find myself an economic migrant living in St Albans and working in London.
My preference is for cask conditioned beer but I can be pushed into Guinness at the first sight of a cloudy pint. Lager is for extreme circumstances only.

The Rats Castle, St Albans

Breaking news: I walked past the pub at the weekend and a specialist team of builders were in stripping off the cumulative layers of nicotine and tobacco residue. The RC has been something of a haven for smokers giving the interior the feeling of being inside a kipper. I guess the smoking ban has given the owners the opportunity to reinvent it. The banner outside describes an enhanced food offer and a beer garden (presumably to keep the existing, fuming, clientelle happy). Reopens next month apparently.

The Cardinal, Victoria

Popped in here at lunchtime and marvelled at the way that a pub with such huge windows could be so gloomy. It defies the accepted laws of physics. The odd lights may have a part to play here. However in its unassuming (and rather dark) way this is a fine pub. Two pints for 3.44 can't be sniffed at and the scampi and chips were fine. We're not spoilt for choice in Victoria and if you're looking for a real pub you'll find a home here.

The White Lion, St Albans

I was in here the other Sunday night with Miss Jones. I was struck again by what a decent honest-to-goodness pub this is. The ale is reliably good and there's always a relaxed atmosphere about the place. It's an unpretentious pub for professional drinkers. Had a game of darts with Miss Jones. She won one game I won the other - the right result for an evening of continued conviviality.
